If you move with it then you give yourslef another way to win the hand. But as usual, you decided to take a small piece of what someone said and just comment on that instead of actually analyzing there argument and what there trying to say.No, as ussual, I pointed out the first, most obviouslly wrong thing I came across. If I did that for the whole argument, you'd probably just stop posting and cry.Whatever. I'm done with this. Those that think it's a good play will be the reason I don't have car payments for the rest of my life. Why I bother to try and educate people who don't want to learn I have no idea.John Murphy eats aborted fetus brains as dinner apatizers.

I think to make the play he did he had to have eliminated Aces of Kings by some read on Dean.
I doubt it, I don't think they had even played at the same table very long in the Main Event.

I think to make the play he did he had to have eliminated Aces of Kings by some read on Dean.Wow, I had no dea that he played a level where he could eliminate those hands but not see that Dean was clearly callig an all in move there after his initial raise. Is like some sort of limited telepathy?

Alright, I've already stated that I think folding is the best play here so weve got that out of the way.I do beleive that calling is by far the worst play. If you cold call the 500K, Murphy has a little less than 2M left in his stack.Unless he spikes an Ace or King on the flop he will simply have to give up on the hand, and if he does spike an Ace or King he will probably not get any action from Dean(unless Dean also got his Jack and then would snap him off). Hes not gonna make anymore money on the hand if he calls and hits, so the one time in three that he hits he will bet and Dean will probably fold, and the 2/3 that he doesent he will more than likely check fold the hand.

I've heard about that type of telepathy. It's like knowing that your gonna get lucky on your date, but forgetting the condom. It's great that you knew to take her to a nice dinner, so the telepathy paid off but when you have herpe sores for a month the limited aspect really is a pain.

Just wanted to make it clear, that it's easy to shut Smash up. All this angry talk is really silly, and should be banned from FCP.Smash, at some point in the argument, usually lays a money wager on his view. $1K was the amount this time. Just take the bet and go from there. It is silly to argue a point but not put your money where your mouth is. We play poker, which is essentially a game of putting money where your mouth is. By continuing to gripe and only post, you are like those guys at the table who fold their hand to the guy with Aces and then yammer away about how you had them beat. Pathetic.Sadly, no one has yet to really take any of Smash's bets (there was a welcher of sorts once), but still they yammer away. That is just wrong, and should not be allowed on FCP. And yet this happens over and over on FCP. Meanwhile, Smash is still standing. If you want respect from me (not that I'm saying anyone does), make your points clearly without the posturing and argue poker, not egos. There are arguments to be made for the actions John Murphy made, but they are not being effectively made here and have not addressed the issues brought up by others - and not just Smash. Thanks to Mark33f for posting the actual hand history.
So Elkang, you think the angry talk in this thread should be banned? Which angry talk in particular are you speaking of?It would be ok though, if people wagered on their points of discussion? I actually kinda like this idea. Put up or shut the fuck up. But no, that just wouldn't work.I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but if you think Smash doesn't have the largest ego on this forum, then either you lack an understanding of ego or you're just fellating him with your adoration. After seeing your avatar, I'd say it's the latter. As for the AK vs JJ hand. Matt Dean was 1 of 2 people at the table that John Murphy should not have pushed there against. It's basic NLHE strategy and this was the most important NLHE tournament of the year. John didn't even take 10 seconds to think about what to do after Matt made the raise. Maybe John misread his hand and thought he had AA?If he just calls the raise and the flop misses him, he can still get away from it and just move down one position in chips to 4th. If he calls and hits the flop, makes a bet causing Matt to fold, then he's 2nd in chips. I don't understand why people have argued that John calling, hitting the flop and not being able to get more out of Matt is such a bad thing.Moving all-in was just a horrid play. If he had taken even 15 seconds to think about all the implications of this hand, he probably would have come to the same conclusion.

no he played great, of course luck was included. played 5-10 nl w/ him at lucky chances casino before he was famous. a gus hasen type player, very loose, very creative, and very dangerous. i think if he didn't had such a big score that night, he wouldn't have goin to the WSOP that yr.the funny thing about that, is that lucky chances has never spread a 5-10 nl game. they have b.s. 1-1-2 2-2-5 and 10-10-20 nl games, where they proceed to rake in monster fing rakes on u idiots taht play there. fkin joke. obvious uve never played there
Where do you play in the Bay Area that has a better rake and worse players?

i refuse to play in the bay area anymore. do poeple not realize that the dealer button post is absolutely ridiculous. i mean c'mon every 6 players ur putting up small blind big blind and big blind again. and then ur stuck with the half hour rate. even if ur up a couple hundred dollars, after two hours of sitting back, Lucky chances has all ur money back thru the dealer rake and the hourly charge. bay , lucky, and artichokes are all like this... not sure about the place in san jose, garden something. i just play online, in tahoe, and vegas now.

Again, I NEVER SAID IT WAS A GOOD PLAY. Simply, that there were worse plays and that some people might look at that situation as one to attempt to build there stacks.
I really cant think of a worse play here. He put all his money in with a hand that is in reality a drawing hand....against a guy who had proven that he liked to callSaying that Murhpy was "playing to win" is incorrect....what this play says is I dont feel comfortable playing hands postflop....in general i think murphy probably has some serious talent...(he has had a good amount of success in some smaller buyin tournaments this year) so while I think this play was stupid (smash is correct to point out it definitely cost him a million dollars) I dont think that it shows that murphy is a bad player or anything....anyone can make a mistake and I respect that he made an aggressive mistake and not a defensive one

Yeah the rake is pretty bad, but all jackpot tables are like that in Cali, not sure about anywhere else. That's also what makes it so great, the players are all trying to hit the jackpot and playing way too many hands. The jackpot contribution is the same as you go up in limits, so playing 3/6 is a waste of time. I thought the hourly rate for NL was pretty standard. I prefer live play to online, but do play online quite a bit for convenience and tournies.Tahoe? Lots of poker action there, I can see why you'd make the trip. (sw)

Here is my opinion. Both players played the pot carelessly but both of them had a risk reward ratio, that if they hit reward would be a huge boon to their stack. I think Murphy misplayed his hand the most. After watching most of the reruns numerous times I can say that he was one of the craftier players with a great post flop game, so putting everything in preflop meant that Murphy would be putting all of his chips into the pot before the flop which took away from his ability to outplay the opponent(whom I think he would outfox in most pots) later. He shouldn't have risked everything with AK in a preflop situation to a player who previously called a big raise with Jacks. AK is a tricky hand. Sure it has great potential to materialize into a nearly unbeatable hand(if the other player has a lower pair). Some of you need to remember that AK is an underdog and is not entitled to win every time. Having said that, Murphy at least raised instead of calling off his chips, so to his credit he gave himself a good shot to win without seeing the flop, but in this case I agree with Smash. There was no reason to move in against one of the two to three players who have you covered.[/i]

OK, thought this would be settled by now, because it seems pretty much common sence. Dean's bet of 500K screams that he is not laying it down. He is not going to leave those chips behind. So those of you figuring a possible fold into the equation are dead wrong. Now, that we have that out of the way, if you are gladly shoving your chips into that pot as an underdog, then you will not be a successful player over the long term. With two million in chips he clearly could have waited for a better opportunity. This is an easy fold, period.By the way to those of you saying a call is appropriate you are wrong as well. Calling off 500K, and then abadoning it post flop is just not acceptable.

I just wanted to point out the entire reason the "1K" bet was mentioned. I "wagered" in a post in this thread (wager could be exchanged with the words "would say" in the exact sentence) that maybe a player like Layne Flach or Gus Hansen might not think Murphy made a donkey play reraising w/ the AK, in response to Smash's claiming that any player who knows anything about poker etc. would never think Murphy made a good play. He decided to run with this "wager" in a pathetic attempt to look tough or superior or whatever, because he is a pathetic person. Obviously there would be no way to confirm the results or collect the wager, I used the term simply as a literary device.I myself think Murphy made a fine play, he could have folded as well which also would have been fine. Maybe Murphy picked up that Dean felt vulnerable in the hand, whatever. Most posters agree that calling is the worst of the 3 options, which I agree with. So I doubted I was alone in my assessment of the situation, where an argument could be made for pushing or folding. Frankly though, the minutae of the Murphy hand was not the reason I was inclined to start contributing to this thread at all. It was Smasharoo's attitude and misinformation I was attempting to discuss. Instead of giving thought out responses to people, Smash attempts to win arguments by telling people "you're wrong" "you don't know anything" etc., tries to bellittle a person instead of backing up his aguments, a clever misdirection tactic. He told me I have so much to learn, and basically said I knew nothing about Poker Tournament theory. For what it's worth, I have been playing as high as 15-30 for a 4 years now, won plenty of money, made multiple final tables in online multis, close 40% of my sitngoes, etc. etc. I've read all the major books and some not so major, follow Card Player and 2+2 every month, follow all televised tournaments. I also discuss strategy almost daily w/ a close friend of mine. He introduced me to Poker 4 years ago, after I had already been playing Magic the Gathering at a Pro Tour level for 3 years. This guy makes his living crushing Party Poker's 15-30 and 30-60, a valuable resource for me. But, according to Smash, I know far less than him, I will learn someday though, as he mentioned in one of his informative replies to me. Whatever.Recently I have began contributing to the discussions here at FCP (I lurked for a long while), as I feel I have some knowledge to share. The majority of people who enjoy these forums seem like good people who genuinely want to improve their poker game. Folks, Smash's poker theory resolves around only absolutes. He is inflexible and inarticulate. His attempts to belittle other posters by insulting them adds nothing to this forum. Anything he might be able to add to a strategy discussion is far outweighed by all the other know-it-all crap he litters these boards with. He is a cancer at this site in my opinion.I know this is incredibly long winded sorry. Peace.

yeah, i'm pretty sure lucky chances on north highway 101 off oyster st. never spread a 5-5 nl game every sunday where you must complete it to $10 to call. so obvious that i've never played there even though i know that prahlad friedmen, antonio esfandiari, phil laak, and gabriel thailer used to play there back in the days and they spread the 10-20 nl game monday, wednesday, and friday. my advice to you is to stay in your low limit area and shut the fuuck up about things you have no clue about.give this thread a rest, it sucks.
