SuperJon 175
Downloading Westworld and going to start that today since I've heard so many good things. Afterwards I plan on watching either The Wire or The Sopranos. Hesitant on Sop. just because I did have the ending spoiled, and while I'm sure there's great stuff in between, I think the ending would just piss me off.
brvheart 1,752
I seriously don't get the hate for the ending of the Sopranos. I love the ending. In fact, I think the ending is what I liked most about the entire series. But if you hate movies like No Country For Old Men, because they aren't tied nicely together, then you won't like it. BigDMcGee 3,352
Ok, having the ending be the thing you liked MOST about the series is just crazy talk. First of all, Paulie Walnuts isn't in the ending, therefore it can't be the best thing. Also, the Soprano's was never about the destination. It's not Game of Thrones or something, leading up to some grand thing. It's a character study of Tony and his family, with a lot of really hilarious and enjoyable side characters attached to it. The plot was never what made the Soprano's great.
BigDMcGee 3,352
I think one of the great "what if's" of television, is what would the sopranos have been like if Tony's mother hadn't died IRL. The show at the beginning was a drama about a mobster's mother issues, essentially. I feel like the whole narrative arc of the series had to be changed because the actress died. Prior to her death, it did seem like the series was building towards something. But after she passed away, every season was it's own independent story arc.

But after she passed away, every season was it's own independent story arc. it would have been interesting to see where they would have taken her possibly "ratting" out Tony about those airline tickets she was arrested with. She was his achilles heel One thing that I found interesting was that episode 1 of the 1st season was a true pilot, there was no guarantee of a full season order. You can tell quite a bit of time passed between episodes 1 and 2 because Meadow had a nose job in between. David Chase has said that if the series wasn't picked up for the full season that he would have gone back and shot another hour of footage and released it as a feature film. This is the exact point I was making with my No Country comparison, especially wrt Tommy Lee Jones.
