Windsor Trip Report (part 1)

Recommended Posts

All this happened in March and I typed it up to send to my friends, and the thought to post it here just occurred to me. Here it is:I’m a student at the University of Michigan and a self-described degenerate. I’m a degenerate, except I’m under 21 and have never been to a casino before. There is only one reasonable solution. A trip to Windsor Casino in Cananda. We planned to leave Friday at around 5 PM play poker all night and leave sometime the next morning. At about noon it started snowing. Not just some flurries or a dusting. By 5 PM there was 6 inches of snow on the ground. Being 19-20 year old males, there was no way that a snow storm was going to stop us. I was accompanied by Ian and Andrew. Ian was driving. Andrew offered to drive, but Ian’s parents gave him a Jaguar. Ian’s a good kid so obviously he tried to downplay it saying the car wasn’t worth much and how it was just a hand me down. Kids these days.As soon as we get onto the highway, Ian informs us that he thinks the gas gauge is broken. He says it says it’s at less than a quarter of a tank, but he just filled it up earlier this week and has not driven much. We all unanimously agree that it must be the gas gauge that’s broken so we drive on.The aforementioned snow has clearly affected traffic. Everyone seems to be going 35 on the highway. The Jaguar is rear-wheel drive. It does not handle well in the snow. About 2 hours later we are just getting to Detroit. This should’ve only taken about 35 minutes. I ask Ian and Andrew if they know which exit to take. They say that they’re not positive but Ian knows we can either take the bridge or the tunnel to get into Canada.Andrew says the tunnel is better so we decide to take the tunnel. We are driving and they think we have gone to far and missed the signs for the tunnel. We turn around and continue to look for the tunnel. We find the tunnel. We pay the toll, and start to go under the tunnel. The US-CANADA boarder is on the other side of the tunnel. About half way through the tunnel the car feels as if Ian is pressing the accelerator and then braking. Pressing the accelerator and then breaking. Pressing the accelerator and then breaking. I ask him what he is doing. He says he doesn’t know. Then he realizes the car is running out of gas. WE RAN OUT OF GAS IN THE ****ING TUNNEL GOING FROM DETROIT TO CANANDA.There is no breakdown lane. There are two lanes in this tunnel. One in each direction. We are making a mess of traffic. We immediately put the hazards on and try to call AAA. We call AAA (thank god I have cell reception in a tunnel). We explain our situation and the guy on the other side of the phone starts laughing at us. But in a nice way. He feels bad for us and goes through the standard that they will be there within 1 hour, but then tells us he will try to have somebody there within 20 minutes. While waiting for the tow truck people behind us start honking. Thanks *******, just give me a sec to move. Oh wait, I DON’T HAVE ANY ****ING GAS.About 30 minutes later we get a call from a tow truck driver. Of course he has to be black. He says he’s at the tunnel and asks us “Where we at.” We tell him that we’re INSIDE the tunnel. He says he can’t go in there. We tell him to just pay the toll and we will pay him back when he gets out of the tunnel. He argues that he doesn’t have the proper paper work to go into the tunnel. We tell him that it’s not a boarder. The boarder is after the tunnel. All he has to do is pay the toll, fill us up with gas, turn around and go back. He continues to say that he does not have to proper paperwork. We tell him to the stay there while we call back AAA. They put us on hold. We call Canadian AAA. They say Ian’s AAA account has been suspended. We think it may have to do with arguing with tow truck driver. As we are wondering what we are going to do, highway patrol sees us and asks us what happened. They tell us to put our car in Neutral and they will push it out. They start pushing us out towards the Canadian boarder. They push all the way to boarder on the other side of the tunnel and continue to push us through the boarder past the boarder patrol/immigration station.Yes he pushed us through customs, without us getting our passports checked yet…Stay tuned to find out what happens next.Edit: Because so many people are mentioning the tow truck driver being black thing. This trip report started out as an e-mail among friends. One of my close friends is black and we always make fun of him because he always overeacts to it. As i said below, yes i just pulled the i'm not racist I have a black friend card.

LOL, Detroit-Windsor border fiasco's. I have about twelve stories about crazy shit going on there, the best one being when my buddy crashed into the middle of the tunnel when he was going 30 mph in a jeep after it had just rained. Brilliant!BTW, who calls a tow truck in a tunnel? Methinks you'd have to push that bitch out any way you look at it.CANT WAIT FOR PART 2!p.s. i just had to get my car towed recently, and the AAA driver was black, and was probably the coolest AAA tow I've had so far. LOL at being near detroit and not expecting a black tow-truck driver.
