SBriand 4
Well here it is. Game 4 and the Wings are down 3 games to nil. What cliche needs to be used here? Take it game by game? Period by period? Shift by shift? This is not a good position to be in. Only 3 teams have ever come back from being down 3 games to nil to win a series. The Leafs did it to the Wings back in 1942. Islanders did it to the Pens some 36 years ago and well, wait, the Flyers did it. They did it just last year! They came back from 3 games down to take the series from the Bruins and ended up going to game 7 of the Stanley Cup!!!! Just last year! The Wings are strong, they know what it takes to win! The Wings have players like Datsyuk, Zetterberg and one of the best players in the game wearing the C! Nick Lidstrom! They are also at home where a rabid Detroit crowd will be urging and pushing them on for one victory. Then what? Then the momentum switches and we have a chance to go to the Shark Tank and then win again and then you end up RIGHT BACK IN DTOWN FOR GAME 6! Would the Sharks really want to play the Wings in game 6 in Detroit!!!???!!! I would think not. This series is far from over! Will the Wings actually pull out 4 games in a row and move on after being down 3-0???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!Naw, probably not. Oh well.
digitalmonkey 929
Wings win tonight and then lose Game 5 in San Jose. That's my prediction.

Dubey 1,035
I'd never count out Detroit, they are too good. San Jose really does seem to have their number recently though.
SBriand 4
Okay I just went to lunch and heard these 3 calls on the sports talk show. 1. We need to trade Nick LiNstrom and get us two North American boys. One who plays good defense and another who can beat people up. We have been getting beaten up all over the ice by SJ it's surprising that there are not more injuries. We need someone to instill fear into the other team. This is a black and blue state and we need a hockey team that can beat other teams up.Radio Guys Response: It's Lidstrom and he is a FA after this season so you can't trade him. How many cups did Probert and Kocur win for us?2. (Today's main discussion is the whether Modano should play or not) Babcock is a great coach. He will be a HOF coach if not the best coach ever. So if he thinks Mike should sit out then he has his reasons and I can't question it. But I do think he has made some mistakes. Kindl should be in for Ericsson because Ericsson has been beaten badly in this series. I also thought that Franzen came back too soon. He should have let him rest at least one more game because he looks pretty hurt out there and has been ineffective. I also think he brought back...oh crap, what is that guys name. Oh man, I can never remember this. Well he wears number 40. He isn't playing well either.Radio guys response: They hung up on him. If you don't know who Hank Zetterberg is then you shouldn't be acting like you have any clue what is right or wrong.3. I think Modano should play. He will provide that veteran leadership and help them score two quick goals in the 1st quarter and...Radio guys response: cut him off immediately and asked him...first what? Caller: quarterRadio: you mean periodCaller: no quarterclickYEah, sooner they lose the better it is for my drive time radio enjoyment.

SBriand 4
I couldn't watch the game, but Marleau is anything but heartless. He played pretty uninspired hockey last night but people are clearly riding him because of his whopping zero points. I think he has been effective in other areas in the first 4 games.
runthemover 39
JR had talked about the lack of will or whatever you'll call it back when he was on the team. Perhaps Marleau was the one or one of the ones he didn't believe in.Or, he's trying to do the "I just called you out so next game you'll step it up huge" thing.I'll definitely say that you see Marleau coast more than you used to. But he still does burn and can. It's been quite a long time since he was the guy with the most playoff goals over a 2 or maybe 3 year period. I think that was 2002-2004 maybe just 2003-2004

SBriand 4
HHOF on hold...Lidstrom is back for another season.http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369487 6.2M. Wow, thanks for the hometown discount.I was hoping for 4.5 and figured it would be low 5. Speculation is that he wasn't planning to come back but with Brian gone they begged him to stay and it ended up costing them money.Hard to get too upset about having one of the best D-men back on your team but a small part of me wants to see them start building a future instead of bring back all these 40 year olds. I shouldn't complain though.
MapleLeafpoker 1,462
I shouldn't complain though.sorry pal, but this. You got one of the best D in the league to come back and play again. Id kill to have him on my team for 6.2million.
SBriand 4
sorry pal, but this. You got one of the best D in the league to come back and play again. Id kill to have him on my team for 6.2million.But why? What do you think it will get you? Is the rest of your defense solid enough that by bringing him in puts you over the top? Or would that $6.2M help in a couple other areas? Or is spending $6.2M going to take you to the finals next season? Cause if not, you won't have him the season after. It's one and done. My only real issue is that I do not think this team, by signing Nick, has solidified itself for a cup run and maybe part of me thinks that taking that $6M and building for the future is more important. I am not saying I know better than Holland, cause I simply don't, but I don't automatically think Nick is $6M solution to the teams defensive problems. Still a lot of time left and they have a little money to play around with so I could be wrong. I love Nick, glad to have watched him for the past 19 seasons and look forward to one more. I guess I just expected a cheaper contract. He has taken less money in the past to help build a team for a cup run and I would think with one more season he would free up a little more to help his chances at one more run. *shrugs*at least I just don't fawn over every move my team makes...lol
serge 904
I think a guy like Lidstrom you have no choice but to sign him if he wants to play..Sure you are overpaying for his services this year, but the man is a legend. Derek Jeter and the Yankees are a similar situation in baseball.I think Lidstrom can still contribute for sure..But paying a little more than Gonchar is not that bad IMO..(i think Gonchar isnt very good)
MapleLeafpoker 1,462
at least I just don't fawn over every move my team makes...loltrue dat!here's what Im thinking....1. Detroit isnt that far off from being a Cup contender. In any given playoff year, a team with a core of Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Lidstrom, Kronwall can pull off a run. Are they the best team? No. but I think every playoff year shows the best team on paper doesnt win. And Lidstrom is just such a horse to ride in the playoffs, there's almost no one else Id rather have.2. Id take Lidstrom, if for no other reason, then just to show my young players how to play on the ice, how to be a dedicated pro, and how to conduct yourself away from the ice. I think Detroits success is due to guys like him, who have helpedthe next generations learn the game. Id kill to have someone like him show a Jamie McBain what it means to be an NHL'er. If you ask me, its what Joni Pitkanen's been missing his whole life, the guy just doesnt have the "ooomph" to be a great player.3. Im not really sure how 6mil in cap space gets properly used for a rebuild, or for young players. We always talk about cap space, but I maintain its greatly exaggerated. I really dont think paying Nik 3million would have really changed things all that much, unless there's some 25yr old UFA that Detroit can get for 3mill , that could become a star. These things just dont exist, usually.I think Detroit has enough youny players chomping at the bit for icetime (Tatar anyone!), and I dont think cap space will be an issue for most. you know better than me the Wings' situation, Im just a huge Lidstrom fan. And it's not like he's washed up, he had 62 points this year and is nominated for the Norris once again...
ajs510 122
3. Im not really sure how 6mil in cap space gets properly used for a rebuild, or for young players. It's pretty moot IMO, if you have an option of spending $6.2 on Nik Lidstrom, you spend $6.2 on Nik Lidstrom. I'd firebomb a small country to get him into a Sabres uniform for a season, it would be worth watching the hockey games from Gitmo. <grin>
