vegas during the wsop

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be going to Vegas this summer for part of the World Series and had a couple questions:1. Are hotel rooms harder to find and do hotels jack their rates during the Series because they know the numbers will be up?2. Are the numbers in poker rooms up or down substantially and is this competition better/worse then is typical of vegas (in the 2/5 NL range)?3. Is the Poker Lifestyles Convention worth seeing?4. Anything else I should know about going to Vegas during the World Series or things going on during the Series? Thanks for any help.

1. No - Most of Vegas doesn't even know the WSOP is going on - we met cabbies and hotel staff, strippers last year that had no idea there was a major poker tournament going on. More people come in for conventions every week, then show up for the WSOP overall. Found hotel rates like the Wynn 14 nights for $800 per person with round trip airfare included for this year2. Poker rooms are busy, you'll see a lot of pros around, in general the low limit games are worse competition because every TPTK pro is there too, not to mention the overwhelming amount of backwards ballcap, sunglass, ipod wearing college kids who think they are the next Chan. Last year my friends and I averaged ~$100 / hr. overall after playing 10 days at the 1/2NL tables around town (especially at the Rio) 2/5 is just as juicy, just need to be able to handle a couple of harsh beats now and then by the drunks who have been playing for 48 hours and calling all in with Q3 and hitting (sorry, bad personal experience there for a pf push of $250 with AA just because I knew I would get a caller flop Q33 blah blah blah)3. The lifestyle show is like any other convention that is trying to sell you stuff - it was next door last year so its worth checking out4. Not everyone there is into poker like people on the message boards. You're part of a small world as hard as it may be to believe. Spend as much time playing as possible, but once you get tired, go find something else to do and don't chase your money if you're losing. There will be a whole new group of bad players there whenever you show up again.

Thanks Socrates info helped a lot.Especially the part about poker players being the minority. Ive never been to vegas but in my mind its just a giant casino where everyone is gambling or sleeping 24/7. I've read that its becoming more of an all round tourist town more and more though. I'll surely be playing the 1/2 NL games.

Excellent post. I am planning a trip to be there for 5 days over the weekend of July 15th for satellites and $1.5K events. So far rooms rates look damm reasonable.

Seems that Stratosphere is pretty cheap, is it somewhere decent to have a bed? Is it a long way from stuff?I've heard Binions is cheap, but a total shitbox... anywhere else that is real bad, or a good deal and decent?I've only stayed at Bellagio, lmao :club:

Not much more to be said other than what Socrates has already summed up, but I would add that if you're a pathetic fanboy like me, the lifestyles show does draw some "big-name" pros signing autographs and promoting their poker rooms.Lots of free stuff too.And the Bodog girls.Wait - ignore everything I said before that last thing.
