daddypoker23 0
I want to start becoming a poker dealer, but I don’t have any training or experience dealing. So I called up every local casino in my area and ask them if their were any openings for poker dealing? They all said the same thing “currently there are not any position open” so then I ask if/when there is a opening will you hire and train someone to become a poker dealer? They all rebuttal similar things that they would prefer someone who has experience at least 1000 table hrs. (which is about 6 month). So my question is. How do I get involved into poker dealing (am very knowledgeable and know the ins and outs of poker dealing) if I already know the basics of dealing is it really necessary for me to attend any poker dealing school? Or is experience the best teacher? However, how do I get a position at a casino as a poker dealer without any experience? If every casino hires someone with experience then how am I ever going to get opportunity to become a poker deal? Any intelligent advice will be greatly appreciated.Your friend, joel

I'm sure the big casinos have different standards than the riverboats which are different from the Indian casinos, etc. The two bigger casinos here have dealer schools, but the smaller one just wants an audition. Sonicpb 0
Even if you know the "ends and outs of poker" you defiantly need some kind of experience before hoping in. First thing first, I would make sure that you are ready for a pretty boring job and dealing with some terrible people. It isn't all bad, but it defiantly has its moments. As for finding a casino to start in: even the nicer casinos don't care if you have been certified; you have to work your way up. Like someone else suggested, humping a dealing job at a crappy riverboat or Indian casino is a good way to get your foot in the door. If you can't find a dealer school I would ask some of the dealers in your local games to show you some things. Most the fellow dealers I know that deal private games know as much or even more than the average casino dealer. If at all possible, try to get in dealing a private game even if it is just for a few hours. Experience is a pretty big factor in a good dealer. Lastly, work on pitching cards. This is pretty easy since it only requires you, your time, and a deck of cards. A lot of dealers think a good pitch is more important than it really is, but when casinos are hiring it is one of the things they look for to try to see if you have any experience. I hope I haven't discouraged you from dealing. I really love it and think it is a great job if you have tough skin.Best of luck!

If all of your local casinos are not currently hiring new dealers then I recommend going to a local dealer school to efficiently learn and get some experience under your belt. The dealers are the main face of the casino to the players and I'm sure that they don't want just anyone sitting down and dealing the game. After you have successfully completed the dealer program a lot of the time the school will have associations with the casinos and can help you get a position.Another thing... Since they are currently not hiring dealers, ask them about other jobs (i.e. brush, chip runner, board operator). This way you will get your foot in the door and be ready to jump into a dealer position when one opens. Also, most of the time these positions get a percentage of the tips. The other option is to check the tournament schedule of the casinos. A lot of the time if the casino is running a big tournament or one of their yearly tournament series they will hire extra temp dealers just for the series. Again, this is a way to get your foot in the door and a chance to impress the managers and floormen. If every casino hires someone with experience then how am I ever going to get opportunity to become a poker deal? Its slow if you know all the games, but you get some experience and training on collecting rake. Its simple but being fast is key, and that takes some time to get used to.
