Tactical Bear 3
lol:http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/1065-s...-for-dustmites/Has anyone heard this? Did anyone even know this happened?A female friend of mine sent me a few tracks from Dustmites via Instant Messenger years ago, when I still lived in Ann Arbor. I didn't listen to them immediately, but I put them on my winamp playlist, and "Mighty Little Man" eventually caught my ear. It ended up on a mixes, and eventually made it onto my iPod. I didn't even know what a Steve Burns was, let alone that he was the turd hosted Blue's Clues, until quite a bit later. "Mighty Little Man" is still on my iPod. It's a pretty fun song. I never even thought to look for Steve Burns pitchfork reviews. I probably just assumed it would be so low-profile that even a faggot/hipster outlike like the 'Fork wouldn't pick it up. Tactical Bear 3
For some reason, I took The Walkmen out of heavy rotation a while ago. I think I changed iPods, didn't have their discography on my computer, and just never really thought to go back and download it again. A few days ago I started working on a little Christmas project, and part of it involved picking out my 15 or so favorite Rock Songs of the decade. I knew there were a few songs missing, so I spent about 48 hours thinking about it, and I remembered them all except one, and it was killing me. I started looking through some old pictures1, and I saw one of me and two of my best friends, taken before my 20th birthday, all of us drunk and happy. I looked down and said, "God, how did I ever get laid with that haircut?" Which inevitably brought to mind the lyric: "See me age 19 with some dumb/ haircut from nineteeeeeen...sixty/ moving to New Yooooooork... City/ live with my friend there/ we're all taking the same steps/ they're foolish now.""Man, that was a good song. I haven't listened to the Walkmen in forever. Geez, I used to bomb that one song at full volume every morning, first thing when I got up. What was it... the... 'The Rat,' that's it. Oh! That's it! 'The Rat!' Yeeeeeessss!"Weird how that stuff works.Anyway, I love that song. I rolled my windows on my way to campus, turned my speakers up as loud as those pieces of crap would go, and let that song fucking rip all morning.1There are about 300 pictures of me in existence. 8 of them are on my phone. 100 or so belong to my parents, 90 of which were taken before I turned 18, the other 10 of which are Christmas family pictures or pictures from random weddings. The other 192 were taken in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in 2002 while I was on Spring Break with my friends. The 5 of us bought 10 disposable cameras each, and we used them all. Against all odds, I have them, still. I left them when I was 21, but an old friend of mine collected them -- along with some odds and ends that I had collected over the previous 3 years, mostly from The Wall of Shame from my dorm room Freshman year -- with the intent of getting in touch some time down the road and giving them back. It was a pretty fucking touching gesture, and Wang was moved almost to tears. Anyway, there are no more pictures after that. I don't think there's a single picture of me taken between 2003 and 2005, and there are definitely fewer than 10 taken from 2003-2008; I will not have my soul stolen, thank you very mucho. Tactical Bear 3
The Project I referenced in my last post is the following:For my father, I'm making a "The Decade in ________" collection of iPod playlists (and accompanying CDs).So far:- The Decade in Rock- The Decade in Pop- The Decade in Dad Rock- The Decade in Black Music, For Blacks By Blacks- The Decade in Underrated- The Decade in HipsterI might add a few, but I think it will be good. I planned on it being about 100 songs, and I think I've got 50 or so. I've got 2 songs from the Walkmen, 1 from Radiohead, 3 from Outkast, 1 from Lily Allen, 2 from TV on the Radio, 2 from Beyonce Knowles, 2 from Jay Z, 2 from Wilco, etc.If anybody has any suggestions for some music for a man who likes Coldplay, "Wolf Like Me," Smile (Brian Wilson) and "Smile" (Lily Allen), let me know. I'm open to suggestions. Once I get it all done, I'll share. And I'll credit any contributors in the notes, since I'm writing a paragraph for each song.
