i started poker when i was 20..im now 22 and while i do love poker i choose to see poker as a way to learn about life not as a way to destroy your life... the problem i have with these 18 yr old "pros" is they have no clue how to play but think that they can bluff the world. I like most everybody on this forum realized that we have to read from the pros hence sshe and so on...these "pros" think they can be dn and gus just by playing every hand.. and what not...they bring it on themselves b/c they dont take the time to let poker teach them. i have found and i bet most of the serious players on here can agree that once u begin to understand poker u begin to see life a little different. Money itself becomes a little less important and u begin to see the edges in situations and how to exploit something for more gain. Poker is more than just cards and until those "pros" realize that they will just be degenerates who wonder why they just can win

Good point Royal.  I have said that it is only time that the government tries to get involved in online poker, to tax or regulate etc...  This would be a perfect excuse for the government to get involved in online poker.  Especially if Hillary Clinton gets elected (which would be horrible) and she can push that agenda.
I could be very wrong here, and if I am please let me know, but I don't see what the US government can do to get their hands on online poker other than blocking access from US networks. Remember, these are off shore sites with international clients and as such don't follow the laws of the US government. The only other thing that I can see them trying to do is work with the sites to get the personal information of all people playing and tax them on winnings. I know that Bush likes to think that he can control the world but he's a bit mistaken.

that makes complete sense, but wanting to tax something and being able to tax something are two completely different things. The more I think of it the more I believe that the sites are going to go along with the US government and allow them to have the poker information on all US players. It's either that or they will have to stop access to the US networks and that would take a major dent out of their profits.

Theres been alot of good points mentioned in this thread. I agree that there are ALOT of young poker players these days. Why? Because its the "cool" thing to do. Its all the hip and the craze, its the "bingo bango bongo hes all in vince for 1.2 million dollars" excitement. Do I think that this crazy could possibly steer a portion of the younger generation in the "wrong" direction? ( i.e. not focussing on community, productivity, the good of others... basically a normal career and a "normal " life ) Yes. Do I think that this could cause a boom in degenerate gamblers? You bet. Do I care? Not one single bit.I don't play poker because its "hip", or because I wanna be on the WPT Final table with "OMG DOYLE BRUNSON" . I play it because:1) I enjoy playing poker2) I feel I am a solid, winning player.I don't play for the craze of being "all in" or for the sunglasses. I play because I can and do make money doing something I ENJOY, which is alot more then ALOT of people can say about their "careers".I know ALOT of kids my age ( im 20, 21 in january ) that are just HORRIBLE. They spew money at the table, talk hot shit... whatever... I don't care... as long as their your chips and your money, you can do what you want. I also know a few skilled young players. But the idiots far outweigh the number of solid players in my age group.Concensus? If enough of these kids get hooked for life... I should own a house by the time Im 23 ... lmfao

No one is wrong, these are only assumptions, but not unlike the Napster incident, and share ware, if "banned" in the US and Canada, it could become illegal to participate in online gambling regardless if these sites are located off shore. It might sound far fetched but isnt impossible that they could say "no resident of this country can be affiliated with a non-sanctioned site.

I guess everyone got offended that young kids talk shit and think they're winning players.I'm sort of upset that any young jackass would steal $600 or a bunch of rolls of quarters from their mothers.I'm 18 and whatever I gamble is whatever I make at work or winnings from other games. If I stole money from my mother or any other family member I don't think I'd be able to live with myself.

On one hand, I like tha fact that poker has become the game it has. I think a lot of kids play poker because it's OL, which makes it more like a videogame than anything else. The future of OL gaming is very vulnerable in this country, and kids like this make for excellent anti-gambling commercials. Since the only true deciding factor in whether or not a government initiative works is how many votes it will get, these type of situations are a coin flip, to put it in terms most of you can understand. All one needs is a few well placed ads featuring some cleancut, 20 something preaching about how he thought OL poker was harmless, until he started stealing from Mommy and Daddy. Then its a small step to a comparison to stealing for drugs, and 2,000,000 Christian soccer Moms are leading a campaign to rid the country of OL poker, because there's no way to regulate it. Plus, it's gambling, and gambling is bad, mmkay? For those of you who have a mean streak, and can actually play cards, do what I do. I recently went to a home game that I've played in for over 15 years. One of my buddies brought 2 young 20's types who got bored by the limit games we play (Stud, HE and Draw, limits are 4-8). They wanted to play NLHE because "that's the true test of one's poker skills and balls." I told them not to make the offer again, and they were properly warned by their boss (my buddy). They insisted, so I told them I would play for any stakes they wanted, to which they countered a "small" game of $1/$2 blinds. I bought $40 in chips and within 40 minutes, I had taken over $400 from each one, leaving them completely penniless. I got up to rejoin my friendly game, and told them pointedly that their game was welcome anytime.

yet ppl on this forum predict the end of the " poker boom"..the number of kids 15-18 that are poker freaks is mind boggling...didnt anybody see that piece that hbo sports did about teens playing poker..in a few years those are gonna be the guys calling 3 bets out of position with A 4 OS...so yeah, i welcome them....but not their mothers
FYP
What the heck? MILFs rule!Seriously, stupid teenagers are stupid teenagers, and poker has nothing to do with these scenes. Two years ago they would have stolen that same money to buy a super cool skateboard and go to the park. Poker is the cool new thing and that's what they are blowing money on right now. Next year(month) it will be something else.I would not expect a big influx of poker teens becoming legal and throwing tons of money your way. Most of them will abandon poker long before they become legal to play, as they find that getting drunk at the local college and banging the cute cheerleader has a much higher +EV, and the few that do stick it out will actually get good enough by that time to not be total donaters. No, the real money should always come from the casual gambler who plays for fun, and has the money to blow...Ray

There was recently an article in sports illustrated about how college age kids are using there tuition and textbook money and losing their asses online and in b & m's. I cant remember what issue it was in but it was a great read.....try to check it out.

I just think it's sad to see how many people my age think they can make it pro in this business.
Agreed. I'm 19 BTW and have no intention of trying to go pro. I enjoy poker a lot, but the pro life isn't for me. I'm just glad I have enough senses to realize it.

The kids in the OP's example stole money from their parents (which is, of course, not a good thing), and somebody else mentioned people using college tuition to fund a poker habit.I grew up in the late 80's and early 90's, before the poker boom, and my peers stole money from their parents and blew tuition money too, but they spent it on weed, coke, booze, strip clubs, etc. To me, a kid who is of age sitting in a legal card room is better than a kid sitting in his room smoking crack or doing meth. Stealing from your parents is not a good thing, but you can't blame that on poker. That's been going on long before the poker boom.

it is probably getting out of hand but it will die down ... plus if you show me a kid in a cardroom i'll show you someone not committing a gang shooting ... those of you who live in denver will get that onematt :club:

I just think it's stupid that some people my age that I know are planning on going pro as their only plan. I plan to try to play professionally only after I go to college for 4 years, and get a degree in accounting most likely. That way, if I fail at poker I will still be able to get a solid job, and probably play poker on the side.

FYP.Actually, Zim, of all the younguns I know playing poker, you've got probably the best chance of all of them of making it. It's just such a small percentage of people who do make it. I know I couldn't. Good plan, though.

i'm 17 and haven't even been able to hit up a B&M game, but i have played online and i agree with DCSports, i really just enjoy playing poker and feel i am at least above average as far as skill with the kids i play with. But yeah, if you are a teen and stealing hundreds of dollars (in rolls of quarters, no less) from your parents, there is a problem. Also, to the OP, $25 dollar max buy-in for a .5/1 NL game? that is absoultely insane! why would you buy in for 25 BB's? I have no intention of going "pro," but i'm gonna push my edges and make some extra money, and hopefully pay for some of college when i get to that point.

While waiting for a 6/12 game to start at my local casino, I decided to sit down at the beginners no limit table.  It's a .50/1 blind and max buy in of $25, just to kill some time and maybe make a little money.  As the game continued on, a group of very young looking guys walked into the poker room, and sat down at the table.  They then proceeded to take out rolls and rolls of quarters and placed them on the table.  I have never seen this before, nor did the dealer as I could tell by the look on his face.  Talking to the boys, I found out they had just graduated from high school and turned 18(the legal gambling age) about 2 months prior.  As we were playing, one of the kids got a phone call and stepped away from the table to take it.  I caught parts of the conversation but what really shocked me was when he said, "no im not at the casino and I didn't take your rolls of quarters."  His quarrel with im guessing his mom went on for a little while, which all of us at the table found quite humorous.  Finally, he hung up the phone, whispered to his buddy something along the lines of "we better get outta here, my mom is censored."  The two got up and left the game.  It gets worse.  Another time I talked to an 18 year old sat down at the 6/12 table and told us how he was going pro as soon as he turned 21 and that he could take all our bankrolls in no time.  He proceeded to lose about 300 in 30 mins or so(which at 6/12 can happen, especially when you play every freakin hand!).  Then, his mother bursted into the poker room and started SCREAMING at the boy.  He told her to f-off and get lost, at which the mother threw his remaining chips across the table, hitting us sitting in the 8,9, and 1 seat.  Apparently, he had stolen 600 dollars from his mother and it wasn't the first time.  What a scene. What do you guys think?  Do you think that poker is getting out of hand in the younger ages(18-21)?  I'm not saying it's everyone, I just found these 2 situations sad and I really hope that this isn't happening with all young people.  Comments appreciated, flamings accepted.  Thanks
WOW, that's too funny.1-800-Bets-off anyone?

It's just really to get the feel for the game, im sposin'. Anywho, glad to see all this feedback, even from the 18 year olds on this site that apparently have some kind of common sense. Get an education, get a life, and if you think you can, make a run at the poker thing. It's a difficult lifestyle as I'm sure most of you know, especially those with bills to pay, mouths to feed, etc. Keep em coming boys and girls!

even if it is a beginner's game, shouldn't they make the blinds just smaller then, perhaps .25/.25? sorry to digress from the original topic, i am just confused
