RayPowers 0
From Bluff Magazine: Eventually Phil gets tired of my nagging. He corners Matt Savage at a wedding, and talks him into giving me a discount. “She’s essentially dead money,” he explains. “I’ll pose for pictures…” I add helpfully.Matt agrees with Phil’s assessment of my skills, or perhaps my celebrity status is a factor. Whatever the reason, I’m in for a reduced fee.Jennifer Tilly got into the event on reduced fee? How does this work? Am I totally naive about this sort of thing, because to me this seems like a huge deal...Ray(Edit, misread, it was bay 101 not wsop)

cursive34 0
a lot of pros and celebs got into this tourny with a discount.
turd ferguson 1
Why are you so amazed? Titties=discounts. Have you not learned that by now?
RayPowers 0
Why are you so amazed? Titties=discounts. Have you not learned that by now?I have never forgotten that golden rule. I just don't expect it to apply to something like this. :)I guess if I played full to enter that event and someone else didn't, I'd be one pissed off mofo. Now, trying to verify Bluff Magazine as factual is indeed an issue, but this sort of thing seems like grounds for a lawsuit if not...*shrug*Ray
lboarts 0
a lot of pros and celebs got into this tourny with a discount.Elaborate, please. Who made up the difference, or was the prize pool smaller than it should've been? Why should celebs and pros get a discount? They're the ones who could most afford it, I would think.Where did you get your information?I will reserve calling bullchit on this until you respond.

psujohn 0
Wil Wheaton - that kid from Star Trek - got a free entry to one of the WPT tournies if I'm not mistaken. The producers do it to try to increase the TV audience. I don't see what the big deal is so long as it a) doesn't change the payout percentage or B) someone makes up the difference/pays the entry. greatwhite 0
Don't the 101 people get a discount? I thought they would.
Stewdio 0
High-profile players get discounts or completely paid for entries into lots of the big tournies, either from the tourney directly for it to gain publicity, or just from corporate partners. That's why Chris Moneymaker can claim that poker is running to good for him still to return to accounting. He's not actually winning more than the buy ins would've cost him. Socrates 0
I don't get why anyone would be upset about this. Its the same as having a backer. As long as the prize money is the same what's the difference?

I've had people give me money to play and expect nothing in return...I got in for a discount from a backer/sponsor and it did not alter the payout of the tourney.

tdmlb24 0
There is a huge difference between a sponsor paying the 10k to the tournament and a TD giving free entry to a player. If the TD, casino, or whomever, doesn't put the money up in place of Tilly putting the money up I think that there would have to be something illegal in that
Rathji 0
Its like Hulk Hogan at the Tampa Bay lightning game, do you think he pays for tickets? It is all about publicity.I seem to recall DN mentioning this happening to him in one of his blog entries
