What does it mean to be smarter than most smart people? If you make a few assumptions, you can give an exact answer.I.e. assume a smart person is anyone who is smarter than average, and assume intelligence is measured soley by IQ.You can make different assumptions if you like.As a bonus question, how does this relate to poker.I won't reply to this thread for a while, except maybe to clarify my question.

1 way of looking at it: So if someone has an above average IQ then they are deemed smart. To be smarter than most of these smart people, take the total # of smart people + 1, and this is how many of those smart people have lower IQs than you, thus if intelligence is measured by IQ, you are smarter than most smart people.

OK. There's been some progress on my puzzle, but not much.Is it too easy? If so, don't be shy about posting an answer. If not, please elaborate on what's been done so far.

I got a headache just thinking about your question, so that rules me out of the smart category.

This is not really a puzzle. It all comes down to the definition of "most," which is subjective. I do not understand the point. EconTim, please clarify what purpose we have in defining "most" for your pleasure.Blessings,Posoo

I had in mind the common definition of "most."You can quantify it however you want, though, and you can still answer the question given your definition. If it helps, this puzzle doesn't have to be about intelligence. It could be about height or other things.

So say there are 100 people in the world. We rank them in order of IQ, 1st being the dumbest and 100th being the smartest. Define smart as smarter than average. Define the average as the mode - the 50.5th person. So all people ranked 51-100 are "smart." Define most as the majority. Smarter than most smart people is then people ranked 76-100. That is, the top 25% of the population (ranked by IQ) are smarter than most smart people.

Very good. Now, anyone want to get more specific?According to the above answer, what would the minimum IQ of someone who is smarter than most smart people be? And what would the average IQ of people who are smarter than most smart people be?(Hint, IQ is distributed normally with mean 100 and standard deviation 15)And further, what does this have to do with poker?

This would all be more useful if you just got to your point. That said, here's a a stab:If you are one standard deviation from the mean, (IQ of 115) you are smarter than 68% of the world's people. If you are two SDs out (IQ of 130), you now hurdle 95 percent of the people. A small step gets you a long way, yes? but now you go three SDs out (IQ145) and 99% of the world is behind you. But what if you are an uber genious with a 160 IQ? well, now you are at 99.5%. Not much better. Kind of a law of diminishing returns.Similarly, look at someone rising in games. Let's say you are one SD out. You are crushing games up to 2-4. You move up and SD, and now you are destroying the 10-20 game. You move up again, and now you are beating the 100-200 game. And now you "hit the wall" as you can't seem to beat the super-geniuses as the next level. Further, the community of games becomes tiny. You can find a 1-2 game at almost any casino, sometimes even multiple games at one place, but the black-chip games are hard to come by. It's lonely at the top.

If I got to my point, then I wouldn't be able to take credit for the good ideas that other people come up with. For instance, I think your idea about rising through the poker ranks is quite good. Not what I originally had in mind, but probably more interesting.

thats essentially what i said. If the mean IQ is 100, then whatever Std Dev. (i dont know these by heart) gets you to 75+% would be the minimum IQ you could have and still be smarter than most smart people. As for the average IQ of people who are smarter than most smart people??? That sounds impossible to quanitfy since you have no idea how much bigger are the IQs of those above you.I"m assuming the OPs point has more to do with playing against smart/non-smart opponents than it does moving up or down limits.
