i play alotta live games here on campus, and some of the people insist on getting stoned before the game.... they dont usually do well. i kinda think they dont do too well when they arent high either. Alotta times when im online playing, people brag about how high they are as well. I know that some of these people are lying to get action, but some of them have to be telling the truth.just out of raw curiosity.... do u guys ever get high before playing, and if so, do you think it helps your game?i, personally havent done any drugs since i was like 16, so i dont really know if it makes a difference to play high.wonder if any of the big game players like to get baked before they play?

I've done it a couple of times, but I really only play in home game tournaments with $20 buy-in so it is no big deal. I would never do it before playing with guys I don't know or for high stakes. The times I have done it I have just been coming from somewhere else where I got high. I would not want people to have that info on me. It is funny because the last time I did it nobody at the table knew and after playing for about an hour somebody said, "This is just one of those days when you are impossible to get a read on."While I doubt it could help anyone's game I think alcohol is worse. Smoking (at least for me) helps me to tighten up a bit and as the quote above mentions shield any emotion. Booze tends to mame shi**y hands look more attractive and it is harder to get out of hands with beer googles.Again, I play in a novice game that is more for sh*ts and giggles than any monetary gain. Just being honest.

I stopped smoking like four months ago and haven't noticed a real difference in my game from being baked or sober, so pretty much I keep it straight now. The alcohol was the real problem, I would make stupid calls and plays that I normally wouldn't make

There are often stoned players at my home games. The only difference that I can discern is not in the quality of their play, but how much they can focus. "Dude, action's on you." "Your deal man." I have to say these things over and over again. It's a little frustrating...

I wouldn't play high. Mainly because I can barely remember my name when I'm high. Now, drunk on the other hand...I really enjoy playing very low limits drunk at a casino. (See the Excal 1-3 free drinks free buffet game) I figure I probably play well enough unconcious to break even in those games and free booze is free booze!

Played the 1/3 at the Excal a few months back...totally agree with you Smash.Guy next to me was soooo hammered, he kept telling me his cards. And when he had a pocket pair, ANY pocket pair, he would yell "POCKET ROCKETS!" for the whole room to hear. He was asked to leave soon after because he kept falling asleep when action was on him...Good place to get your drink on- nice preparty for the clubs because who wants to play $12 for a rum n coke? Sit at the tables for a few hrs, then flask it...

New to poker but an old school stoner.I'm usually somewhat baked. But I'm a real regular user and being stoned is more natural than a high these days. (Need to quit for a couple weeks, but whose got the patience for people when you need your medicine.)I've been both better an worse when stoned. Right after I smoke I'll play too many hands sometimes (if I'm not thinking about what I'm doing). However sometimes you get ultra-focused and in a zone, probably because it calms that adrenaline down.I try and play straight now, but doesn't really happen . . .

I think it really depends on how the weed affects the individual. I am a pretty hard core smoker and i almost always smoke b4, sometimes during and always after. It doesnt really affect me cuz im used to functioning high. I play at least once a week live for minimum 50$ buyin tournys with 30-40 guys....and i do well, and im almost always stoned. On the other hand, maybe if i played totally sober more often i would notice an improvement, but I doubt it. Im still able to keep track of all the information on the table. Now some people may totally lose focus, or act stupid when high and for them it is probably not a good idea.BTW, Drinking is 10 times worse than weed. I once lost a huge chip stack and a tournament at the final table solely becuz i was drunk.Keep your drinks to a minimum and the time between them long. And drink water as well.Well I got to roll a fatty, i got a tourny coming up in 45 minutes.May all your hands be live and all your pot be canadian, goodnight everyone. :D

I am a regular pot smoker as well as a regular poker player so more often than not, the two meet. Sometimes they get along but sometimes they don't. I find it to be dependant on the degree of highness.Sometimes I'll get so freakin' high that its impossible for me to think about the game. This results in me playing only my cards and not even trying to make a read on what someone else may have which obviously means more losing. But other times, when I'm a good boy, I'll take a hit here and there (if i'm online its easy but in a B&M i'll sneak out like i'm going for a cigarette) and it will acutally help me. I calm down and become more at ease. Its easy to get into the flow of the game in this state. But then after 8 or 10 hours of playing and taking sneaky hits here and there, you've compounded those 8 hours of hits and you hit the wall and have to go home to pass out.So, in conclusion, I find a tiny toke now and then when playing can be an asset to me. Just don't smoke some huge bob marley joint before playing and you should be ok.

im so glad to see this post. i was thinking about posting the exact same topic/question on here pretty soon. ive been smoking pot every day for about 5 years. playing poker for about 1 year. during the beginning of my poker playing i smoked a lot and didnt really think if it hurt or helped me. if i was playing with my friends at school, it would usually be at night and we would all be drinking (quite a bit) and smoking a lot as well. as ive gotten way more serious about poker, i realized that smoking hurts my game a lot. many times ive been doing well in a tournament, gone for a smoke and i start making aweful decisions. as a result i promised myself i wouldnt smoke and play anymore. (still do it occasionally). i have no problem mentioning it online that im smoking, sometimes ill find someone else who is smoking too, gives us something to chat about.overall, i thnk its definitely bad for your game. its harder to remember who did what and when. and time seems to slow down, and one round of hands feels like forever, which makes me more impatientthe only time ive smoked and found it to be a positive is very late in the online multi tables nearing the final table, when my adrenaline is pumping pretty good just for advancing so far. i find it has helped me calm dawn a bit and balance me outanyways, great post!!! ive been waiting to hear about this topic

not everyone .....but theres always a certain percentage who do
The percentage of pot smokers at any given place is higher than non-smokers think. I'm at job #2 since graduation, and both offices have a high percentage of people who casually smoke.I used to smoke occasionally (daily), but now only once in a long while (weekly). I believe smoking is a disadvantage for poor players and exceptionally good players. For most middle of the road players it will make you a little slower to act, but the extra focus makes up for it."I don't do drugs, just weed" - Dave Chappelle

What about coke...or meth?I know there are people who are so jacked up they can't sit still. I stopped using ages ago, but I can still tell when a person is tweaking. Pupil dialation, pasty color, not to mention the non-stop chatter.I beleive there are numerous pros that are addicts. I suppose it gives them the stamina to go on those crazy benders. There are guys...real degenerates...who will play for 3 or 4 days without sleep. Remember Stuey Ungar? It was well known that he was a coke and smack addict. But he was also a champion.I am in no way condoning it...but I have certainly experienced moments of extrememly hightenend awareness while under the influence of such a powerful stimulant. I wonder if some people are capable of using that to their advantage at the card table. What do you think? Can being jacked up actually help someone's game?Greg

My guess is that the player would have to be extremely accustomed to being in that state of mind. If you game Susie Cardplayer some coke before playing cards she would probably have a good old fashioned freak out.
