phil ivey - in a league of his own

Recommended Posts

Seriously, we all know that pointing someone out as the best poker player in the world is very hazardous due to the nature of the game. However, I would like to (as we say in Sweden) put my nose up in the weather and state once and for all that Phil Ivey probably has some sort of ability that no other player posesses. I dont have to tell anyone here what record the man has this spring/summer. It is simly astonishing. I dont know what I want to say in this post really, just that I am dearly impressed by this guy. Views? You guys who want to flame, please keep your hands off the keyboard...

Seems to me that when the majority of the pros are asked who is the best all around player, they all point to Ivey. I'd like to see him do well in the Main Event, though. Lately poker players are becoming more and more like other pro "athletes" by complaining about the celebrity and buy in/prize structure. Just Play The Game.

ivey is sick.....he has it, whatever it is...
I couldn't agree more...he has that extra "thing" that seems to put him a notch above everyone else. When he's "in the zone" or "on his A game" it just seems like he is almost unstoppable. And like another poster said -- he gets the nod as one of the best if not the best from all of the pros - cash or tourney players...that speaks for itself. He's scary good...

Yup. #1 on my fantasy team for a reason. Ivey is tha man. Glad that he took a break from the big game to go bracelet shopping. GO PHIL!I think it's safe to say he's in the top 2-3 in the world on any given day. Lately he has been pretty unstoppable, and I wouldn't be surprised if he picks up another bracelet this year before all is said and done. I think maybe now that he's picked up one this year he's gonna want to shoot for a second.

do well in the main event? how about 2 years ago when he went out 10th to a bad beat. if he had won that hand he had a good chance of winning the event.

I'm not really sure he's that good. He hasn't won any bracelets in Hold'em. He's only won one Hold'em tournament against a suspect field. He's had marginal success at the world series, and he sure cant compare to the one and only Phil Helmuth. He should probably go back to playing video games. His cash game success came because he was running real lucky. Just ask the layers he kept beating. The other pros just say he's good so he'll keep dumping money to them in cash games and tournaments.

Have you seen the beatings he takes getting his money in with the best hand in the main event? Shipley rivers an Ace to get Quad Aces to top his 3's over A's full house. The year after Moneymaker rivers an ace to get a Q over A boat to beat his 9 over Q boat. I mean there's only so much he can do without stacking the deck.

Sorry guys no more sarcasm. For a stud specialist he plays NLH better than anyone I've ever seen. Remember that resteal against J'Dags. Dags in sb w/ QJIvey in BB w/ 94hFlop comes K T xDags checks Ivey bets, Dags raises. Ivey Reraises w/ 9 high. Dags folds.DId same thing against Chan on Poker Superstars. People are scared of him.

somebody said it best , he's scary good....i got a good laugh out of lucky's comment, and yes i know he was being sarcastic, but i have had people actually say " ivey is way overrated " to me before...i ask them why and they all say " he hasn't won many nl holdem tourneys." they all point to his " weak " play in the wsop's main event....like somebody mentioned above, he was a really bad beat away from the final table<where nobody still playing wanted him to be.> we all know how he destroys the highest stakes cash games , so when i ask ppl that say how "overrated " he is about that they all just look at me blankly ...i guess if espn doesnt say ivey's the best, then it just isnt true <shrugs>....

That's completely unrealistic. With a field of 6000 with most being amatuers he has almost no shot of doing well.

Its not completely unrealistic for Ivey will do well in the main event. He' s been running well lately in tournaments. Did well at WPT @ Bellagio. He's noted for the ability to play marathon sessions. Why not Noone said he's a favorite to win, but I'd make him a favorite among the pro pack.

My comment was I'd like to see him do well. Nowhere did I specify he hasn't in the past. The point is, people like Moneymaker and Raymer are probably more well known to the casual player than Ivey, so, yeah, I'd like to see him do well to become more mainstream and marketable.

He does absolutely no self promoting at all , got to respect that about him. At the same time you have to be wondering if he is actually all there to be able to turn down millions in advertising and book promos. I guess his standards are different than most .

Well he's got his 5th bracelet, who thinks he'll get more than Chan, Brunson, and Hellmuth before he's all said and done.
Chan, Brunson, and Hellmuth combined? :-) But yeah, unless something drastic happens to his game I could definetely seeing him getting more than 10 bracelets before he stops playing poker.
