And stereotypes don't end there. Unwittingly, even unknowingly, society fits children into boxes based on gender: girls in one, with baby dolls and fashion magazines; boys in another, with toy trucks and math books. It's wrong, but it happens.
Wow. Slightly biased journalism? There is a reason there are gender roles in the world. Because men are different from women and vice versa. My daughter has been wearing her footy pajamas lately and putting a stuffed animal inside where it zips up in the front. She says she is being a mommy. I can't imagine the trauma that this kid could potentially go through if they try to continue this ruse for an extended period of time.

yeah, it's one thing if they want to conduct an 'experiment' until the baby is 1 or something; stupid, but whatever. If they actually attempt to extend this silliness for any significant period of time into the baby's life, they won't be doing the poor kid any favours, long or short term.

It's an opinion column. It's supposed to be biased.
semanticsThis (story) reminds me of the time I was in IKEA and there was this woman, very dyke-ish (is that a word) in front of me with this cute kid. The kid was decked out in REI gear, probably about 3, had long hair down to it's mid back. I asked how old her daughter was. She just ignored me. I thought she didn't hear me. So I asked again, "Excuse me, how old is your daughter?" She turns and mumbles something very rudely, and all I can make out is "3". My son was about the same age at the time and I said something to the affect of "oh my son is the same age as your daughter" she ignored me again.I turn around to my wife who is just shaking her head at me. She said that the kid was a boy. I was in shock, apparently the lady turned around and grumbled "My SON is 3"The thought that this child was a boy had not ever entered my mind. I spent the next minute or two before they checked out looking at the kid trying to see where I could possibly tell it was a boy. The only thing that said boy to me was the shoes, but they were hiking boots, which could have been on a boy or girl. Damn hippies.

"Everyone keeps asking us, 'When will this end?'" said Witterick. "And we always turn the question back. Yeah, when will this end? When will we live in a world where people can make choices to be whoever they are?" This is awesome: "In fact, in not telling the gender of my precious baby, I am saying to the world, 'Please can you just let Storm discover for him/herself what she (he) wants to be?!."

Because men are different from women and vice versa.
imagine the confusion if men were different from women and women were the same as men.

It's why I made sure I clarified my point. I don't want any gender confusion.

Probably less than the trauma the kid "could potentially go through" if it was a person who identified as one gender, but society/some jerk in a store identified them as another.Presumably, the kid will do normal things, like prefer certain tv programs, pick out certain clothes, choose certain toys. That will do more to identify their gender then whether there is a dick or a hole. Well, not really of course, the dick/hole thing is going to be the determinant. Unless they move this kid out to a desert somewhere, there is going to be a significant amount of social effect, based on physical characteristics. But I don't think the parents are crazy or abusive to allow the child to make some of their own choices instead of letting stereotypes do it for them.I actually think the whole thing is pretty much moot. If the child's parents feel that way, they are not going to be the type of parent to dress a girl all in pink and only give her dolls. And if they aren't overly stereotyping, they can ensure the child has the ability to make their own choices. Doesn't have to be a big newsy thing. Plus, when your kid has the same name of a well-known pop-culture character, there will be associations to that character's gender. Now, a name like Apple, that would be hard to guess at one way or another.

You have a kid? How crazy! I have a kid! We should totally talk about them and annoy the hell out of the other people around us who don't have or care about kids!Sorry, I'm sure you bothering that woman was perfectly justified in the child-rearing world. I just get annoyed sitting by the pool at my apartment complex where we have to listen to kids yelling or mothers talking really loudly about their kids and either how awesome or how annoying they are. Oh, and sometimes they discuss vacuum cleaners.

Yeah, my first thought was "Quit trying to talk to a stranger for no goddamn reason". I hate that kind of banal chit chat. Here's how it woulda gone if I had been that woman:ElG: Oh my son is the same age as your daughterLG: Yeah him and about a million other kids, who gives a shit, now leave me alone.

This can be traced straight back to the delusion of "gender equality", worshiped like a sacred golden calf by the more ninny-oriented left. This is obviously the ultimate manifestation of that delusion; they'd have all children raised that way. Sad to see that two kids will get totally mindfucked in order to further the moronic 'ideals' of their parents, but just makes the world that much easier for my kid, who's raised to appreciate the natural precepts of her gender, but not consider it as a barrier to anything in the professional world. She would eat those little gimps alive. Pretty much a 100% certainty that these kids either completely reject the ideas of their parents later in life, or turn out to be total trainwrecks.

It's another example of confusing "we have the same rights" with "we are the same". People do that all the time and it's really annoying.

Ya it's fairly normal. IIRC there was a reason I was striking up a conversation, I think I wanted to ask her something, but cannot remember what now.

You are going to make a lovely parent.

Also this story reminds me of another that has been on CNN today about this kid back in the 70s who was effeminate. His parents sent him to a special new "therapy" to try and train more masculine traits into him. http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/06/07/sissy.boy....html?hpt=hp_c1At age 35 or so he killed himself. Now, my favorite part of the story was that the psychologist who developed the therapy subsequently had a long career in gay prevention, was head of some organization devoted to curing unwanted homosexuality, etc. Then at some point he was photographed in the airport with a male escort he had hired to go to europe with him for a couple weeks. I love the guy's defense:Rekers denies any sexual contact with the male escort. Rekers says he's not gay. He claims he wasn't aware that his companion offered sexual favors for sale over the Internet until after the trip, and says he hired him only to carry his bags.Ohhhhhhh it was a totally run-of-the-mill heterosexual hiring of some dude to go to europe with you so he could carry your bags.

You guys know that they are't saying gender doesn't exist, just that they're not willing to choose it for the child, right? For all we know, the kid might start looking at pink frilly stuff, and three months later it'll be Botoxed and entering pagents or riding ponies or whatever overtly feminine children do these days. Also, they're ruining 3 kids, not 2. "Storm" has two siblings.

Perhaps you wanted to ask her if she knew whether or not dyke-ish was a word?

Turns out these parents decided not to choose a language for their kid either. "If Storm wants to speak Mandarin, he or she has the freedom to do that. We're not going to impose the idiosyncrasies of our own cultural communication system on our child. Of course, we may have to learn whatever language her or she chooses in order to communicate, but we'll consider that new knowledge a gift from our child."

I'm not sure they understand how kids learn to speak.

I hope it's jive.
