2009 Offseason Thread

I think it is questionable how much of an upgrade Artest is over Ariza. Not on talent obviously....but will Ron behave/accept being a role player/etc.One good point made by someone on TV was that now Kobe will NEVER have to guard the other team's best perimeter player. Thats a big plus for LA.If San Antonio or Boston get Rasheed Wallace, they will be just as loaded as the Lakers.
Whether it was apathy or age catching up to him Wallace's game took a large step back last year. Don't project the Wallace from 4 years ago onto whatever team he ends up with in 2009. That being said he still will help whatever team he ends up on a lot.I think the Celtics in particular are going to take a step back this season. Age is really going to catch up to them.

I think a lot of people are underestimating how good Ron Artest is. I agree with CaneBrain that he's a headcase but he just adds ANOTHER offensive threat to this team. Everyone knows how great of a defender he is, but when he plays smart, he is an excellent offensive player.

why? this confuses me. if i were a bulls fan i'd be a bit upset.
I'm not upset
I'm bummed he's gone, but I'm glad we didn't try to sign him for anything more than what he got.
Pretty much this
he said today on espn that chicago never even offered him a contract, that really surprised me
They didn't have cap space to offer him money this offseason without going over the luxury tax. In separate offseasons they offered him 6yrs/$55mil and 5yrs/$50 mil which he turned down both. Him doing so gave the Bulls the flexibility to make the Salmons/Miller trades and make a run at the 2010 free agents. While I don't think that is the best plan...it's their plan.
No team that has Ben Gordon as a significant part of it can ever contend for a title.Him coming off the bench in a Vinnie Johnson role and playing limited minutes on a good team for instant offense with the second unit would be possible.Don't really want to pay $10 million for a guy who is only a bit better than Eddie House.
He is significantly better than Eddie House. I agree he isn't a $10 million dollar man but he is a legitimate big time scorer in this league which Eddie House is not.
He's Larry Hughes Jr.If he touches the ball, you might as well just get back on defense for the next possession.
Not a good comparison. Hughes is a slightly above average defender and a horrible shooter. Gordon is a great shooter and a horrible defender

I'm surprised by how many people here don't share this sentiment. I don't think this is a very good fit but a lot of you think this really loads up the Lakers even more. Interesting.

you cant underestimate having a guy who can shoot 3s and defend a post player reasonably well. plus, I question how motivated wallace was last year. I think he fits either team's scheme perfectly......Spurs make the most sense to me.

I think a lot of people are underestimating how good Ron Artest is.
He's a top 20 player in the league, maybe higher. And anybody who thinks he's going to be a problem doesn't know him or his career well enough. He is the PERFECT guy for their team. Rasheed Wallace going to Boston is big too. I can't foresee anybody beating either of these teams barring injuries.

Artest is very good but I think Top 20 or higher usually demands more than mid-level exception money. Mayybe you can find a couple players you'd be willing to trade below for Artest but not many. It's not in any order and I probable left some big names off that could be substituted like Carmelo, Shaq and Nash. 1 Kobe2 Lebron3 Duncan4 Garnett5 Pierce6 Pau Gasol7 Bosh8 Dwight9 Chris Paul10 Yao Ming11 Kevin Durant12 Danny Granger13 Deron Williams14 Wade15 Dirk16 Amare17 Arenas18 Rose19 Elton Brand20 Roy

Artest is a great defensive player and very good offensive player who has a tendency to take some bad shots. I would take him over a few players on your list such as Brand and Arenas or players on bad teams who have put up big scoring numbers like Granger. Houston will miss him more than they'll miss McGrady this year.

Is Mark Cuban taking drugs.Jason Kidd 3 years for $24 million while no other team would possibly give him more than the mid level exemption and 3 years for a 72 year old point guard. WTF.

According to his front office system, Jason Kidd is the best player in the league.

I know you aren't trying to dis Granger, but he's legit. I watched just about every Pacer game this past season and Granger definitely deserves to be on the list.

He could have got more money somehere else, but he wanted to play with th Lakers. So much so that after Game 6 in Boston, he walked into the Lakers locker room and told Phil Jackson that he wants to play for him and he can help bring a championship. Then he walked into the shower area while Kobe was showering and told him he's going to come to LA to help him out. Money was not a factor.

looks like the bulls will be getting carlos boozer, and send kirk hinrich to the blazers and tyrus thomas to the jazz
Interesting. On the one hand, it sucks to see everyone BUT the Heat get stronger in the East. On the other hand, didn't Chicago just blow its 2010 cap room so it cannot come after Wade? I hope so. If they got Boozer and they still have room for 2010, I will officially start worrying about Wade leaving town next year.edit: Boozer is in the last year of his contract so Chicago did not blow his cap room.....but it would be hard to re-sign him and sign Wade.

That deal is not going to happen. Sam Smith completely shoots it down.

But before I get to that, I guess I have to deal with this trade story that was making the rounds in Chicago and the NBA Thursday of a three-way deal involving the Bulls, Trailblazers and Jazz with Carlos Boozer going to the Bulls, Kirk Hinrich to the Trailblazers and Tyrus Thomas to the Jazz. Not true. Made up. Fabrication. Prevarication. Am I being too subtle here?

Why in the World would the Bulls be an attractive place for D Wade as a free agent ?
