go to download.com and d/l and run both adaware SE and spybot search and destroy. between the two of them, they get most of the nasties out of a computer.

yeah, good advice. just make sure you have some time set aside for this little task.there's also a program called hijackthis that creates some pretty detailed logs about what's going on in the computer but you'd have to find someone else to read it if the first 2 don't take care of the problem.

ease of use - buy a tivoslightly harder, more configurable - windows MCE. feel free to go premade here?slightly harder still, waaaaaay more configurable, for the tinkerer at heart - sagetv. build your ownlinux options like mythtv have probably gotten way easier to install but IMO a DVR is not a great reason to switch to linux, because DVR's require tinkering (any of the ones worth using do anyways) and learning a new OS to tinker with your DVR is too much work for a lazy sickie like me.avoid (IMO) gbpvr and beyondtv.your hardware requirements depend completely on what you want it to do. so, what do you want your DVR to do? standard def or HD? only record tv or play DVDs/mp3/divx/video games/etc. play the recordings on more than one tv? have how many tuners? if all you want is a tivo - buy a tivo. they're easy, reliable, cheap, and worth it IMO. but if you want more functionality, a HTPC is great, but you need to have an idea of what you want to be able to do with it first.

Dear Ouch. One day the wireless internet stopped working on my laptop at my house. The wireless still worked for my desktop though. I took my laptop to my dad's house and the internets worked fine there. What should I do?

hmmm, well, most of the reason i want to do this is to have something new to tinker with and amuse myself, since i get bored with stuff easily and almost have all the stars in mario galaxy already. so it sounds like i'd be leaning toward sagetv (which i've heard good things about already--runs on windows, right?). i want it to do this:-HD DVR, preferably with 2 tuners-hold all the *legal* media files that are currently hiding on external hard drives to my poker computer-run as quietly as possible (my current computer was intended to be a MC computer and is fanless, can i do that with core2duo processors or no?)-look pretty (not joking)-ideally, it'd have HDMI in/out, as well as component jacks-needs to be able to control my directv receiver so i don't have to change channels twice all the timewhat's the overall cost of this probably going to look like? if it's too high, i'll probably get an older intel imac and just use frontrow and an HD external tuner.

Move to your dad's?When you returned home, your laptop wireless still didn't work, correct? You could try rebooting the router, thats the first thing I would try.

Dear Ouch,Is there any way to turn off the security features in windows vista where you have to click allow/cancel anytime you want to do anything without having a message in the taskbar saying security alert?
If you're talking about UAC then: http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htmOr upgrade to WindowsXP.

DISCLAIMER: I don't do HD on my HTPC.All that you want and more can be done with Sage (except HDMI in, maybe. Why do you need that? You'll want to use a receiver for HDMI switching, etc)Fanless is always a compromise, but the new C2D chips run damn quiet and cool with stock HSFs. The more harddrives you use, the more heat and noise are generated. That said you can use network storage to move the data out of the living room. You can also get 1T drives now.Looking pretty shouldn't be a problem for you - just drape your hand-me-downs over it and it will look STUNNING. Or invest as much as you want in a fancy HTPC case. Or sage just came out with an HD extender - you could put the computer/directtv receivers/etc in a closet and run network cable to your TV and just have that there. Then you would need a DVD player at the tv too though.Component and HDMI is relatively standard on newer HTPC-flavoured video cards.Does your directtv receiver have 2 tuners? The whole HD tuning mess is still very much that - a mess. IMO, although it works, the tech is still sorting itself out. You can control your receiver in 2 ways - via Infrared Blaster (transmits IR codes like a mini remote at the receiver, controlled by the computer) or via usb/serial control. The second method is better but much harder to get working properly. There is some sort of HD receiver box mod that is designed to make your receiver more friendly but I can't remember what it's called. There's a bunch of other stuff thats always coming out too but unfort we still havent reached the holy grail, which is just plug the coax cable from the wall into your computer and tune from there (except for unscrambled QAM HD content - confused yet?). Anyways, HD works, but its complicated and messy.Cost is entirely up to you. You can build a computer with XP and Sage and tuners and HDs etc for (realistically) <$1k, or spend much much more. The more bits you have already that you can recycle the better obviously. The forums at Sagetv.com are fantastic and full of info.

I'm gonna go ahead and say DO NOT go with mythtv. I don't mind it now but my results would be infinitely better with the same time investment if I had gone with sagetv.

Checky:You CAN get this under $1000.I hate to be an OS thumper, but Linux could do all this for you. There's an incredible website dedicated to the process of making a media center in Linux (although a lot of it could be used when doing a Windows Media Center):http://www.linuxis.us/linux/media/howto/linux-htpc/Yes, it runs on MythTV, but it's not like you're trading off a ton of quality.Just promise me you won't get a DTV HD-DVR, please? They are notorious for not working right, plus, if you switch providers, you'll lose your recordings, plus DTV charges you (since they've basically taken over tivo) $5.99 to do something you can do for free with Dish (after buying the receiver, of course), or if you set up a media center.IMO HD-DVR from Direct isn't worth it.

oh **** it, i'll probably just buy a directv hd dvr for 250 on ebay. now i need something else to amuse me during my non-poker hours :club:.
Call directv, sometimes you can get them cheaper and get them to install it for you. I bought one at Bestbuy for like $129 years ago and then needed a second line, they wanted $99 to run it, so I called directv and it was $99 for the box and they installed it for free.

I adopted this orphan computer a few years ago. The sound works fine in Linux, but it's always been garbled in Windows. At one point, I think I had win98SE on it. It's win2k pro now.I've swapped out 3 different sound cards and still had the problem. The VIA's KT133A VIA chipset supports onboard audio, but the motherboard doesn't and there therefore aren't any BIOS settings to disable it. I suspect that's where the problem lies. Motherboard: KT7A RAIDBios Version: A9CPU: Athlon 1.2Grapphics Card: Nvidia GeForce2 MXOperation System: windows 2000 Pro (Retail)There's a newer version of the BIOS avaibable from Abit, but I need to know which revision of motherboard I have before I can update it. The only way to tell, supposedly, is by the markings on the slot next to the case. I stuck a dental mirror in there and read the numbers of the Abit support, and they have no idea. I've tried moving the sound card around to different slots, dorking with seemingly unrelated BIOS settings, installing VIA's sound drivers, uninstalling them, removing hardware in windows & pulling the card. Any ideas?

strange problem. it was like this in w98 too?the only thing that i can really think of is to wonder if the windows' soundsubsystem is mucked up? have you tried to say reinstall directx/directsound? reinstall windows in place? nuke and reinstall?

Yep.

Yeah, but I might try that again. I think I changed sound cards since I tried that last.
reinstall windows in place?
Yeah.
nuke and reinstall?
sigh. Not yet.

so i had some issues on my own pc, where about half the time i would boot it i would get pop-ups that were like "system mesage, your registry is dirty..." they weren't ie based, but looked more like real windows messages, but were obviously advertisements. they were only occurring about half the time i booted. the rest of the time i would be free of them.anyway, i downloaded ccleaner and spybot and ran them. i still think they're in my system and want to get rid of them. but the real problem is the next time i tried to load a flash video (after i ran the cleaners) i was unable to do it. i noticed an error message towards the top that read "Warning: symlink() [function.symlink]: Read-only file system in /var/stox/flash/flash_launcher_new.php on line 70"any thoughts?

disable the messenger service. this is different from the MSN/AIM type messengers. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s...e/stopspam.mspxthe flash thing sounds like a problem with the website you're visiting, not your computer. PHP is a server side language, not client side, so it probably is badly coded webpage. the error code is also I think pointing to a HD location on a linux box, probably the webserver. an easy way to test this is to see if others get the same problem... link? (please be porn, please be porn :fingerscrossedface:)edit: unless it happens on all flash sites - if that's the case, well, let's just cross that bridge when we get to it?
