Calculating Golfer's "par", Daniel Style

In every lesson I have ever taken the instructor usually identified a grip flaw, fixed it, and the results were just amazing.Weird how something seemingly so small can make such a huge difference.
QFT I went out with a teaching pro and he said it all begins and ends with one thing - your grip.

My swing right now is excellent. I've also fixed my grip and am able to hit all of my clubs in the bag. I like a strong grip but that isn't a good idea with fairway woods, at least for me. By making my left hand more neutral I'm able to get the ball in the air with the 3-wood and that's huge for me. Now if I'm on a 400 yard par four I can get on in 2. I did yesterday with a 3-wood from 2-5 yards. My driver is really working great too. Hitting it down the middle for the most part, and also play a slight draw from time to time when necessary. As long as I'm conscious about the fingers and hands being in the right place I feel great about my game now. With my driver I actually still go really strong with my grip. GET A POWER HITTER! That thing is AWESOME and adds 20 yards to your drives in one practice session. Also using the Momentus Iron and that's cool too. PUTTING- I was having some issues a week ago with lag putting and cured it in a BIG way. Now when I putt I NEVER take a practice putt at all. That way I get much better feel for distance. Two straight rounds with 31 putts. What hurt me in my last two rounds was a few unlucky bounces followed by some terrible fairway bunker shots and then a few more bad bunker shots around the green. That "used to" be the strongest part of my game, luckily, it's a pretty easy fix. My handicap is going down each month which is exciting. I'm at a 20.5 now and feel like 95 is a "bad round: now. Once I put it all together consistently I'm going to be in the mid 80's. My ONLY issue is grip and I'm starting to really understand it and get a feel for it. I can hit a fade and a draw at will. Lastly, NEW CLUBS! I have to get new clubs. All of my woods have different flexes, lol. My driver is for seniors, it's an A-flex shaft. I'm thinking Regular flex but we'll see. Lastly, I changed balls too. From the Pro V1x to the Pro V1. The new ball costs me yards with all my clubs, but the good news is that the ball actually bites on the green a little bit now rather than rolling through to the back when I hit it good. Sacrifice yards for spin, I'm good with that.

Do you have the standard grips that came with the clubs. Or did u get them redone for your hands. When I did that I felt like I could grip my clubs better and I felt a ton more confident. When I have a good grip I feel like I cant miss.

Nice to hear the game is coming along. Man I need to get my butt out there and play.So funny how you mentioned about the different grips depending on the club you are using (driver vs. fairway wood, etc.)I was told a long time ago to use the same grip for every club and every situation , but that is just B.S., for me anyway. I strong grip my driver and most of my wedges too oddly enough. Regarding the fairway woods, I have to swing those as if I have nothing in my hands. If I power grip those bad boys I end up skulling the heck out of the ball instead of flying it. Totally agree too about the Pro V's. Callaway also makes a very good Pro-V-esque ball. And what ever brand of clubs you buy next just make sure you get fitted for them. It is worth the extra time and $$$. Blah blah blah.....hit 'em straight.:club:

DEFINATELY GET FITTEDWith as much time/ money you put into the game, paying extra to get the right shaft with the correct club-head, and then playing the ball that fits your swing can only help your game. I have done this with my woods, and when I get new irons, I will get custom fitted.I am not talking about going down to the local golf shop and getting fitted there, I am talking about a place like:hot stix golfand I am sure there are similar places in the Vegas area.Nutz, let me know when a trip to CAZ is planned. Funny how when I lived 2+ hours from a casino, I could never go enough. Now that I live 20 minutes from one, I haven't been yet... Weeknight are usually best for me right now.Daniel, keep up the good grind on the felt and the course!BTW, I just switched from the Callaway HX 56 to the Bridgestone B330-s. More distance off the driver and more spin off the wedges. Nothing wrong with that kind of action

Daniel if you're going to get fit there's a website called Bombsquad Golf and they are based here in Las Vegas. I have worked with these guys and they fit me for my current driver (which gave me 15 yards) and several other clubs. These guys know what they're doing, it's not cheap but worth it. They fit you out on a range with dozens of shafts, a doppler radar launch monitor, and an extensive knowledge of fitting. Let me know if you have any questions or want me to contact them for you.You mentioned you switched balls because you weren't spinning it enough, these guys can actually increase or decrease your spin by changing shafts and heads. It's good to hear you're figuring some things out and bringing that handicap down, keep at it.

I just bought a few new clubs:Driver: I switched to a regular flex shaft with a 10.5. I was shocked, literally shocked when I found the driver that suited me best. I tried the R7, the burner, Ping, Cobra, etc.... but it was the Mizuno that gave me the best numbers when I got fitted. I also bought a some Burner rescue clubs and woods since that has been the weakest part of my game of late. I bought a 3 wood and 5 wood, as well as a 3, 4, and 5 rescue club. Now I have a decent set of clubs in the bag, albeit WAY over the limit, but we play gamblers rules which means you could carry 40 clubs if you wanted to:Mizuno DriverBurner 3 WoodBurner 5 WoodBurner 3 RescueBurner 4 RescueBurner 5 RescueCallaway Irons 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PCleveland Wedges 52, 56, 60Putter

Actually Mizuno usually gets the best review from some of the top level golf magazines. They make an excellent product, but aren't advertised the way the Taylor Made, Callaways, etc are.Sounds like you have a great set to build on your improvements. I wish Ohio had weather we could play year round. It's about 40 today. :club:

Grats on the new driver. Very cool that you got fitted too. Nice with the Burners also. More and more folks are going with these type of clubs and are actually throwing out the high irons. Hey...what ever works. All of my irons are Mizuno's and I was considering a new Mizuno driver last year just before the FCP golf outing, but then Ozi stepped in and hooked me up with an awesome Callaway.Funny thing about buying golf clubs too. There is so much ego when buying equipment and it's just insane! (I don't mean you Daniel, I mean folks in general).Like, I used to insist on buying (and then trying in vein to hit) an 8.5 -degree driver with super stiff shaft because that's what the pros hit, etc. All these clubs did was feed balls to the rattlesnakes. Then one day just for fun at the range I hit my wife's noodly ass 12-degree driver and just crushed the crap out of it. I could not believe it. It seemed I was getting almost the same distance with half the effort. For a while I used to grab her driver because it was so easy to hit. It took a long time for me to come around and embrace the idea of a higher degree driver with a more flexible shaft.Cleveland wedges are teh nutz. I have a 52, 56 and a 60. Putter is a 3 year old 2 ball.Let us know how the new driver treats you.

Nice clubs sir! I haven't hit a Mizuno driver yet, but I will next week at there demo. I am sure the 3 wood and 5 wood fill a gap in your game, but the rescue clubs will really help. You get the distance and more height from these clubs.I have Callaway wedges 54, 60. It is the same guy who designed the Cleveland wedges, Roger Cleveland. Now, go out on that range and practice. Don't just beat balls, set-up like you do on the course for each shot. Have a specific target for each shot, then go take the guys money!

Which Callaway irons did you end up with? The X20s, Big Bertha or Wide Sole...The Taylor Made Burner woods are HOT (MOI Hot) you should get plenty of distance with them.

QUOTE(DanielNegreanu @ Wednesday, November 14th, 2007, 4:13 AM) I'll take that action with a tee spot. Stroke a hole and a tee spot sounds fair to me. Remember, I hit the ball like a Vegan so I can't play the back tees :-)
OziumrulesPar 3's RED teesPar 4's & 5's WHITE tees (Middle tees)I will play the back tees....Me & Nutzbuster will be in Vegas Dec 12 - 16th....I'll pack my sticks.
Hmmm...this gonna happen? Would be good timing wise, cept. the M.E. (day 1A) for the 5 Diamond starts on Wed. the 12th. Can DN use his home course? I owe Daniel $200 from a prop bet, which I will be paying him this weekend anyway, so.....Double or nothing? weeeeeee :club: --------------------

You need a fourth for this I'll drive down. And if DN's ave drive is under 200, you would think a scratch golfer would give him a little better than the white tees on the par 5's... :D

Agree on the white tees Billy boy. And Rob, I just saw a show on the Pilatus Aircraft. Wow...a Swiss made beauty. You should buy one and fly up instead of drive :club: Bill, are you going to bring your clubs for sure?

I'll play if you guys want. Not excited about draggin' my bags to Vegas but what the heck.Thing is the weather can get darn chilly there in Dec. believe it or not. If it's freezing I say no thanks, but if it's gonna be nice I say lets do it. That Saturday would be good, or maybe that Friday, 11-ish?We can make a tee time just to get in the door and then cancel as the week approaches if the weather looks like it;s going to suk.But if you don't want to drag the bag, let me know. No biggy.Any news about the Venetian?

  • 3 weeks later...

Bumping an old thread, but I wanted to note that grip size is an important part of the fitting process. If the guy fitting you didn't do that, he should have.I forget which it is, but I think fatter grips make it harder to get your right hand through the ball, causing a slice. Grips that are too thin do the same. All it takes to fatten then is adding another layer of grip tape...not hard to do for anyone who regrips clubs. But make sure you get fitted for grip size as well as loft, lie, flex, and length.
