Anyone familiar with the Alpha Course? Anyone attend? Some churches in the area are offering it?Thanks
  6. Here's my thought on this one. It goes along with what Matt said. Our life on earth is very short in comparison to eternity - a blink of an eye. From our current perspective, they lost time for more good deeds they could have done and had their lives "cut short". They are going to their eternal reward and in the long view I think they will are happy with the outcome. There's an old song that says, "Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die." The fact is none of us are getting out of this alive.
  7. Here's the lesson I get - I guess we ought to be careful when we taunt God and His prophets - young or old.
  8. Natewood, I suggest reading the first part of C.S. Lewis's book "Mere Christianity" - Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe. It addresses many of the issues you are discussing. The whole book is worth reading. I've enjoyed the discussion, Thanks to all who contributed.
  9. Rom 2:1-16 (NIV) 1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment? 4Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance? 5But because of your stubbornness and
  10. Matt 18:2-4 (NIV) 2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.Rom 2:1-16 (NIV) 1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3So w
  11. Matt 25:31-46 (NIV) 31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you ga
  12. Matt 6:132 Cor 6:14-18Tough situation. I know, Ive been there. Your life will be so much easier with a believing partner. Keep praying - it will work in God's time.
  13. Matt 20:1-16(NIV) The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard 1"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard. 2He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3"About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' 5So they went. "He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. 6About the eleventh hour he went out and found still
  14. QUOTE(DanielNegreanu @ Tuesday, March 7th, 2006, 5:32 PM) Based on scripture, I don't see one iota of a difference between pre-marital STRAIGHT sex and pre-marital homosexual sex. So if you are a murderer and a thief and you stop stealing are you better off in God's eyes?If sin seperates us from God, then why does one or two matter?I'm with Daniel on this one. We ought not fall into the trap that one type of sexual immorality/sin is less offensive to God. 1 Cor 2:12-16
  15. Thanks DN. I look forward to adding this to my day.
  16. I was glad to see the Bob's question and the discussion. It's not an uncommon question in many churches. While there will always be debate about specific doctrinal issues... we shouldn't forget we are called to love one another - to include our enemies. We can do more harm than good when we the tone of the debate loses that element. I think DN said it very well. I don't see poker or gambling expressly prohibited. But we are called to love God, love each other, be good stewards with both our time and our money, to take care of the poor, and much more. So if playing poker doesn't get in the way
