surprised? everyone said this is exactly what would happen when harrahs made their decision... ultimately they'll regret their decision but that won't be seen for several months

People who value 10k more than being there shouldn't play.
Noooooooooo! We want those people to play. Badly.

http://gaamblor.livejournal.com/34110.htmlGreatly lowers expected turnout.
As I said when this was announced by Harrahs...we're looking at 3500 people in the main event this year if the sites can't buy you in. This is about the worst thing that could happen to poker imo. (Having its premier even suddenly cut in half at least)Mark

This sucks! People who value 10k more than being there are the best fish to have. I wonder how many people are going to use their ME money to buy a car instead of actually pay for a flight to Vegas, pay for a hotel, take time off work, and play in the ME.

I wonder what the most seats anyone has ever won is?Especially this year, if they're giving out the money, there must be loads of satellite specialists making tonnes from them alone.

If I won 4 seats...I'd take the 30k and play...I think this would be the obvious course for someone like myself to take (single, etc). But I guess a lot of people might just take all the cash over one entry.- Jordan

so if you you only won 1, 2 or 3 you wouldnt play? I guess the better question for a single guy is would you play if you only won 1 seat? Obv someone like me who has their first kid on the way I would take the 10k, but if a single guy like Jordan, who likes to play big live events, may not enter the tourney with their first entry, then I would think the nmbers might drop even more. just a thought

Wow.I made a post about this several months back (and caught some crap) after I had talked to Mark and a few others about it. Then, our local casino decided that they would just pay the 10 K out for their tourneys rather than do a direct buy in and that seemed to confirm that the M. E. field will indeed be much smaller this year.Good and bad I guess.I know that after playing in the M.E. last year that I would never do it again unless I was bought directly in. I'd take any prize money and go play multiple smaller events and just have a good time instead. :club:

If I won one..it be a tough choice...cause I'd want to use the $10k as part of my roll. Of course, playing in the event would be +EV, but I think spreading the 10k out on a few tournaments could be better.Right now, as far as bankrolls go..if I won only one seat, I'd probably take the cash. But I can't say for sure. I think if I won the 10k cash, I'd spend more time trying to win more seats. Granted, if you won one seat I'd imagine you were trying to win a seat for the seat, not for 10k. So I mean, I wouldn't really play for a seat, unless I intended to use it. So I guess I'm changing my answer. If I decided to today to try and win a seat, I'd take either the 10k seat, or 10k and play a few events, and maybe try a 1k sng or something for a seat.Hopefully that those who have already won their seat still decide to play, but it's inevitable that when people have 10k in their hand they will have a more difficult time physically handing someone the cash.- Jordan

I feel the same way, but with the smaller field, the Main Event might be worth plaing again.

You have to think about too, a lot of those guys are married. When they are bought directly in, their wives are like: Oh wow honey that is awesome. Sure, go spend a few grand for expenses and have a good time. When they are just given $10K, their wives are like: Wait, you just won $10K and you want to go blow it on a long shot tournament?(not saying its like that for everyone, just saying, that scenario will be common...)And I think a lot of young pros/semi pros would just keep the $10K. Thats a big chunk of a lot of people's bankroll. Its not like the majority of the people winning these seats are JC Alvarados who play in all these events. The majority of the people are just random players.Pokerstars bought in 25% of the entrants last year. Just Pokerstars. Its a big deal :(Mark

Can you still buy into the events, especially the main event with world series dollars? If so does anyone know how to go about registering this way and getting into these tourneys with these W$? Thanks

Do they still give out a WSOP 'package'. e,g - do they give 1/2k for expenses? If they don't, then this will contribute further to a decline in numbers, because people may think, 'oh, it's gonna cost me quite a bit in flights, accommodation, food etc' (for etc, read strippers, obv). But, if they provide an expenses package, then more qualifiers may still be inclined to give it a shot.

That's kind of odd, didn't Harrah's add a backyard annex this year in expectation of having over 10,000 players in the ME?Why would they do that if they knew full well that their 3rd party registration policy was going to cut the attendance in half or more?Hell, if I had the option of taking the $10k in cash or using it in a tournament that I realistically had no shot of cashing in, I'd take the money 100/100 times, and I'm sure I'm not alone there. On a brighter note, I may actually play some satellites this season. There's no way I'll be able to go to Vegas for the ME, but if I don't have to, $180 to win $10,000 is pretty outstanding.

They still give the package only you have to wait for the 1k for hotel until after you get there then they credit your account with 1k. So you are having to put up the money for the hotel and then getting it back to blow online I guess. Not sure this is a good thing.

Prahlad won 13 Aruba seats one year. Last year, if I had to guess, Dirty Towel won the most WSOP seats on Stars (I want to say the final number was 6 or 7? He was sitting next to me when he won his last one, I should remember).

The expected turnout is going to be low regardless, they say around the 7k-8k mark, not the 10k that they assumed would eventually get too
You can 100% cut any previous estimate in half if the online sites aren't allowed to direct-register their players. I'd be shocked if the ME gets more than 5k participants this year. Which is fine, really, unless you're one of the guys that was planning on picking apart all that dead money. I don't really understand Harrah's standpoint, anyone want to shed some light on their reasoning? They're basically cutting $50 million out of the prize pool, there has to be a reason for it.

Yea, I mean hell I'd be tempted to play cause of all the donks in that thing. I've satelitted into big tournaments before and havn't really thought much of it. But my roll was also much larger then, as opposed to now.I still think if I was playing a satelitte for the purpose of winning a seat, I'd take the seat. Otherwise, why play it (edit -- I guess there are a lot of bad satelitte players which could make just playing them for the 10k prize pretty profitable)? If nothing else, I'd def. use the 10k to play more series events...I def. wouldn't just pocket it. I'm not that nitty.:club:- Jordan
