Rules Question/ethics

I was playing in a home game $20 SNG Monday night. I've been playing with these guys for about 5 months now and they all seem to be pretty cool. I got involved in a hand with one of the nicest guys there and here is what happened. I call 40 early position (6 handed) with a 10 off. The guy raises to 150 and gets one caller and I call. Flop reads A 9 Q. First guy checks, I check and the raiser bets $350. First guy folds and I call. Turn 4 all rainbow. I check raiser checks. River comes 9. I check raiser bets $450. I think about it and call. He grabs his cards and chuckles and says, "Sorry man I got you on the river, I boated with A9." I say nice hand and muck my cards into the chip pile. He then starts to laugh and shows k8 and says, "I can't believe you fell for that, I bluffed you out of that pot." My hand was very easy to pick back up and show i had the winning hand. He says sorry and scoops the pot. Everyone at the table said you mucked and lost...I feel like I was cheated....any thoughts out there?

you mucked and lost...
The guy is an asshat for angling like that but ask to see the hand before you muck. If someone did that at a casino your hand would be dead but they could get a warning for intentionally calling out the wrong hand.also ...Don't play with those people any more.

Thanks john, I won't be playing there anymore...what burns me up is he said he "bluffed me" after I called him down...

The proper response is "That's not a bluff it's angleshooting and if you do it in a friendly game you must need the 20 bucks far more than I do"

The B&M I have played at have a rule"The cards play themselves" They don't care what is said, the cards are what the are. At show down never muck your hand till you have seen the others cards....
Ya, it won't happen again. The guy is on my dart league team too. He saw how pissed I got and said he'd make it up to me...but I don't even want to see the guy...

+1. People who cheat/run angles in a friendly game are pathetic. You're supposed to be friends having a good time, gambling and drinking beer, why ruin it?
This is why I took his word...then he shows and rubs it in my face...

going by robert's rules, in a casino you could call the floor. it is at his discretion to retrieve your hand and show it to contest the pot in the case of an opponent misrepresenting his hand. in a home game, its up to your host. if i was the host, i'd retrieve your hand (at your request) and tell the other guy to stick it in his ass.lessons learned: don't muck your cards until you see you're beat. you get the added bonus of making the other guy look like a dick, instead of him making you look silly.

You are right, I felt confused, then silly, then pissed. I called the host over to our table and he said you mucked, you lost...

Instead of trying to flip your cards over, flip the table over on your way out the door. This might be a bit extreme for a home game, but it is a matter of principle. If this happened in my home game I would throw things all over the place before leaving. I mean, these are the people I play with EVERY week!

I was still in at the time, but was uber tilting, went out soon after. Don't think for a second this didn't cross my mind, but i didn't want to catch a beatin'

If this happened in a home game where I was the host the angle shooter would forfeit his buy-in and be asked to leave immediately and if he ever did anything like that again he'd wouldn't be invited back.

As noted above, in a casino, it would be your pot.In the future, do not muck until a winning hand has been properly tabled.

This was what I thought the host would have done, but the angle shooter has been playing with this group of guys for years. I moved to the area about a year ago and have been playing there for only 5-6 months...

Iam turning red just reading this. Out of embarressment I think I would throw a punch, than escort myself out the door. Iam barbaric but thats the only way I could handle it.

1.) It wouldn't matter unless it was a huge buy-in because the principle is worth more than the buy-in.2.) Grow a pair Nancy! (sw) If you don't stand up for yourself then people are going to bust your nuts all the time.

I flat out told the guy I would never trust him or anyone in a poker game again. Where does it stop. Say he or someone splashes big all-in pots and says all-in for 2100 when they only have 1700. Whose to say someone doesn't bring in extra chips in their back pocket and put them in play when tables are changing...This event caused me to be a lot more conscious of what is happening at the poker table. The kick in the a$$ is that a few hands later I went all-in with aj. Same guy says he feels bad for me and calls w/o looking at his cards. I show aj vs. 74. Flop comes with an ace and a 4, turn brick, river 4. I usually stay there and joke/tell stories/drink with the guys, but I got up and left saying nothing to anyone. Everytime I got knocked out of a tourney, even if it was a suckout, I always said nice hand and good-luck. But I decided to just leave in silence. I think everyone was waiting for something, cuz the place was dead silent as i left...
