I Feel Like Venting

Recommended Posts

So I play in a semi regular game with a couple buddies that we affectionately call the Rich Boys Game. The game is 10/20 pot limit holdem, with a bunch of very rich guys (nobody other than me and my 2 friends that plays makes less than $500K/yr), and most of the guys are well past millionaires. They also are very bad poker players. The skill level ranges somewhere from moderate to downright horrible. For whatever reason, I cannot beat this game. I am now 1/7 in attempts at it, and in total down $10K. I see the craziest stuff go down at this game, yet I run into the nuts constantly. My last time there, I was up $2K, and within half an hour, was down $4K, never having less than 3 of a kind in my hand, playing 5 handed. I've seen a $15K pot, where the board read KhQhTh9h5c, and 2 guys on the river were raising/reraising pot back and forth, till finally the guy with the Ah just called, and the other dude turns over KT. Thats just one example of the madness that I witness regularly. So tonight, I played for 5 hours before busting out down $3K. The 5 best hands I saw all night were: AKs, AQo, AJo, ATo, and 66. No other pocket pairs all night. My AKs ran into aces all in pf 6 handed and I got stacked, my AQo ran into JJ all in pf 5 handed and I got stacked, I flopped a Jack high flush when someone else flopped a Qhigh flush and I knew where the Ace was in that hand, and got stacked.Anyway just wanted to *****. I don't care about the money, it just kills me I can't beat this game. Its like one of those perfect storm situations every poker player dreams about. Rich guys, with money to burn, and somehow you get invited to this game, and they are all horrible players. And you just cannot beat the game. I'm totally not one to think I'm jinxed or have bad luck in a certain game, or whatever. Poker is just funny sometimes. But why is it that in such a high limit, juicy game, I run as bad as I ever do? So nutso.Anyway, I think I can sleep better now tonight after venting. Gl everyone, hope you go to bed happier than me :)Mark

Rigging the deck??? Honestly, it seems like the only adjustment to make is a mental one. You can't control the cards and it seems like you're consistently getting your money in good, which is all you can do. gl (man I wish I had an opportunity like that, e-vite me?)

I found a similar game, just not that much money. I make them really pay for draws, and I try to limp in with connectors. These guys don't recognize moves or plays, and they definately have no idea about pot odds. They just see the size of the pot and call. Change your game to the fundamentals, don't try to crack the game or make plays, and you should see your results turn around.IMHO, it is hard to beat a game where there are more gamblers than good poker players. It seems you have to get lucky more often NOT to be out run. GL and keep grinding.

All-in preflop with AQoff in a PL game?Ignoring that, I'd say it's either a run of bad luck that will even itself out in the long run, or you're having the deck rigged against you by some rich boys who can't handle losing (common with rich kids, they need to win at everything, at any cost). If you keep playing, keep your eyes open to the possibility that you're being cheated, otherwise just stay on your A game, bad play will always be punished in the long run.

We were 5 handed, and I'd reraised in 1/3 of my stack pf. So calling his reshove was mostly odds driven based on his range there.

As much as I'd love to blame it on being cheated, the host (and his brother who generally deals) are brothers of one of my good friends, and I trust them.Mark

Sounds like your playing way too much of a preflop game and not enough of a postflop game. Shouldn't be hard to do in pot limit.
This is probably pretty accurate. But its so easy to get in a lot of money pf as a big favorite also. I have frequently 3bet pf and been called by hands like K9o, any Ace, etc. And these hands are huge dogs to my 3betting range there. One of my buddies limp/calls any hand other than AA/KK/QQ. He won't raise AK for instance, and just muck if he doesn't connect. And if he does, he is willing to get all his money in. He's doing well in the game. I tried playing like this, and it didn't go so well for me.... :)Anyway, just wanted to vent. I love pokah, and the many funny things you encounter while playing never ceases to amaze me...Mark

You may need to look at what adjustments you can make to combat what seems to be a very loose game. Also i don't know how you got it all in preflop with AK and AQ but that is definatly something you should be avoiding. i think you may just be having a bad run although taking some time to adjust your strategy now that you have an idea how the game runs may also help you. The game is beatable, you just need to figure out a way to beat it and sometimes that means making adjustments.

It sounds like you really do care about the money and saying you don't is a cop out for not being able to profit against bad players. If you're playing within your BR, keep at it. The law of averages will eventually come into play and if you don't suck at poker you're probably do for a monster session.

ummm.....sounds like you suffer from "aggrodonkism".If not controlled it can prove fatal. Seriously buddy, you know you can crush theses well healed clowns. But as you well know it is very hard to beat bad players. They respect nothing and rarely will get out of their own way. Perhaps approach this game with a low stakes, low limit strat? I dunno bro. I'm still waiting to get invited to this blood bath!Good vent thread though. I know first hand how +EV they can be, he he. :club:

For sure the game is loose, and I knew this going in. I don't feel like my strat/play is poor, nor do my two friends that play there also. I just wanted to vent a little, and genpop are the only people I know that are up at 2am, and sober enough to listen :)As for getting it all in with AKs/AQ, I can assure you these were not bad plays given stack sizes/players.Mark

LOL, I beat that game the first time I played, then beat the 3/6 at the Mirage, came home, and told my wife how good I was at poker already! (this is when I was just getting started). Hahahaha.Ack, I don't think I can make it since I was out last night. Shan is gone all day today, and I haven't spent an evening with her in like a week. Ack! glglgl though.Mark

Oh that game for sure is unbeatable for me at least. I was just trying to show how silly I was back then, I luckboxed into 2 winning sessions and thought I should TP/MM, so I did, and then realized I sucked. hahahaAdam - I have the TP part down, now I just need to get to the MM part. I'm getting there slowly though man! Actually I've probably made a million by now. I've just lost 70% of it too....heh :)Mark
