Bush is indeed an extremist, or at least he pretends to be because it is politically viable. He is (or claims to be) a born-again and a follower of Billy Graham and Pat Robertson, men who have claimed on many occasions that God talks directly to them. Bush has made similar claims. This is not only a fundamentalist (extremist) Christian notion; it is heresy. The Bible states that God grants man free will. If God is in fact directing these men, the idea of free will is bankrupt, and the Bible is wrong. The idea is antithetical to Christian theology. This quandary was discussed rather articulately by Roger Ebert, the Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times after Bush's speech immediately before the Iraq invasion began. There are of course many theologies in the world, but the two involved here have different theories of prayer. In this tradition, the pope has free will and the responsibility that comes with it. Free will must be absolute or it is not free. God is not a coach who allows the quarterback to make most of the decisions, but sometimes sends in a play from the sidelines. These notions may help explain Bush's tone at the press conference. The questions and answers were beside the point, because Bush knows he is doing the right thing. "The choice is Saddam's," he said more than once. Whether that is true or not, the choice is no longer Bush's. The problem with being sure that God is on your side is that you can't change your mind, because God sure isn't going to change His.

Sorry, but this is such a typical christian's response.Maybe you forgot that not EVERY single founding father of this country was a christian. Do some research and you'll find that out for yourself. Also, maybe you forgot about the statement they wrote into the Constitution that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Hmm, I wonder why a bunch of Christians would make a stamtent like that. Seems it would have been so easy to create a "Christian government" since, according to you, there would have been no opposition to it, you know, with them ALL being christians and all.You really need to lighten up. The fact is that the current administration is infringing on the rights of American citizens because of their moral beliefs which are dictated by their religious convictions. If you can't see how Bush's statement that he would push for a Constitutional amendment to ban gays from legally marrying is an afront to the rights of gays then you too are as guilty of this as he is.I will stop there, as I've argued with people before on their religious beliefs, and it's a complete deadend street.
