FCP Bob 1,321
If it was a friend/acquantince of yours, would you consider it your "duty" to say something. I couldnt come up with a better word then duty. What I guess Im asking is, if someone you knew was sprouting off homophobic/sexist/racist things, would you tell them how you felt, and ask them to consider the ramifications of their actions? I find Im also conflicted with when I can ignore, and when I need to change the world for what I think is the better. It really depends on if I think that person understands their actions and are open to being told that what they are doing is inappropriate. I have mentioned to more than a few people that using retarded or Gay the way they do in casual conversation isn't a very smart thing to do but in those cases it's because I thought they didn't really understand how a lot of others will view them and they weren't trying to be malicious. mrdannyg 274
A friend sends a mass email out, its about the Super Bowl, before the game. It shows the following. Caption: The difference between Baltimore and San Francisco fans: Picture on left: Hot chick in a Baltimore Ravens jersey, flashing her tits Picture on right: Two guys kissing in SF jerseys Offensive, or just humour, good/bad? One of my pools is having quite the argument about it, and I'm curious to hear what you guys think as sports fans. I'm not even really 'offended' by it in any significant way. It is offensive, in that it is saying something negative about a group (implication that being gay is bad), while also not being clever or funny. To be clear, it has to be both of those things to be offensive. If something is negative about a group, but is clever and not malicious, I'm fine with that. I think trying to be too PC is a useless exercise, personally. No matter what you do or how careful you try to be, people are still going to get offended because at the end of the day, some people just really like to get butthurt about issues (see what I did there?) Trying too hard not to offend anyone will inevitably end up in you having nothing at all to say, and shutting down personal opinion, conversation and healthy argument isn't good for anyone or anything. I'm always sensitive to stuff like this, because the people who complain about others being 'too PC' are usually the ones who are saying thoughtless and/or unfunny things without considering for the effect it has on others. I won't pretend the world isn't too PC these days, but the majority of time that is being said, there is a very good reason for it. Like Bob said, it is pretty difficult to offend me. But I also try to be aware of what might offend other people, because it is often difficult for the offended group to speak up.
mrdannyg 274
being a honorary fag alot of you would be surprised what offends the majority of gay guys and what doesn't. 1) Funny 2) Not malicious 3) Says something where the 'negative' comment is actually required for the joke 4) "negative" comment said directly, and not implied You don't need all 4 of those things to be funny and not offensive, but it's a good sign if you have them. serge 904
Along the same lines: Do you guys find the term Toronto Stronger offensive? Someone had a sign yesterday with this logo.. It is of course in reference to Boston Strong as that city came together in the aftermath of the tragedy.

I felt similarly..While I wasnt outraged or offended per se, I would NEVER consider playing that angle.
Fenxis 99
Do you guys find the term Toronto Stronger offensive? Personally I thought it was tasteless... I'm sure people from Boston/victims would find it's offensive.
mrdannyg 274
Tasteless, insensitive, stupid for sure. Not sure it is insulting enough to be offensive, per se, but if someone thought that it was minimizing what had happened in Boston and therefore was offensive, I certainly wouldn't argue. If someone wanted to punch that guy in the chest, I'd have no problem with that.

MapleLeafpoker 1,462
Personally I thought it was tasteless... I'm sure people from Boston/victims would find it's offensive. I agree. Although its hard for me to define, I think was offended by it too, though I have no connections to Boston or the people killed/injured. Im offended for them. Like, shouldnt people know better? It wasnt some 18yr old kid, the guy looked like he was 40. What the fck is the matter with you?

People are going to be stupid...I think we come a long way from the days of "Buy a Porsche Potvin, buy a Porsche" For those that arent old enough to remember...Flyers goalie Pelle Lindbergh was killed in a car crash after crashing his Porsche while driving drunk....The crowd at MSG decided to start this chant because of the rivalry with the Islanders and Denis Potvin. How offensive and tasteless was that? We have come a long way.
ajs510 122
That's actually a pretty good example of how I deal with offensive issues. I read Serge's post and was kind of pissed, for about 10 seconds. Then I got over it, because it happened a long time ago, it's long since been moved past, and it had no direct effect on my life whatsoever. I do think those Rangers fans should be utterly ashamed of themselves, but they're probably the same guys heckling Red Sox fans to this very day.

FCP Bob 1,321
I posted in the Leafs thread before I read this conversation. The guy with the Toronto Stronger sign is just a total idiot and I know that I would have said something to him if I was there and saw him with that sign.

The guy with the Toronto Stronger sign is just a total idiot and I know that I would have said something to him if I was there and saw him with that sign. Glad you would've said something. I'd like to think I would have too, but I weigh 150 pounds, so my appetite for public confrontation is pretty low. I haven't seen anyone defend him, and it's not for "PC" reasons. Even the non-PC'ers think he's an idiot. So that's what it is, one idiot. I'm surprised security let him get in with that sign, never mind let him keep it.
ajs510 122
I would defend him a little bit...in that my right to call the man an idiot is just as absolute as his right to be an idiot. Would I do something like that? No. Would I say something if a friend of mine was doing something like that? Possibly. But I don't think the guy should have been kicked out or anything like that...just for being a rather insensitive moron.

But I do think the Leafs have a right to take that sign away, as by entering Maple Leaf Gardens and wearing a Leafs jersey on a broadcast with that sign, he becomes representative of your team and fans. And while normally I would defend someone's right to be an idiot as much as call them an idiot, that doesn't hold true for hateful or offensive public displays. As we've discussed, I don't think this really even comes close to "hateful," mainly because it is so stupid.
ajs510 122
No, at very most it's in poor taste.
FCP Bob 1,321
Pretty sure that the guy was only outside at the rally and not in the ACC. If I was next to him I would have asked him if he knew how wrong his sign was and suggested that he might want to put it away. I'm only a little guy and I wouldn't have run over and got in his face and called him an idiot but there is no way I would have stayed silent if I was close to him.

pezeveng 207
certain things should be left alone, I remember going to yuk yuks years ago and one of the comedians entire performance was on people with DS. I didn't crack a smile once and found the entire performance to be absolutely offensive. 3 years ago my good friends wife had a wonderful baby boy with DS. If I ever sit through a performance like that again I would yell you suck get up and leave and make sure everyone sees me leaving.
