Best Player Not On An Olympic Roster?

Recommended Posts

Marty St. Louis' name keeps coming up, but I think I'd have to give the nod to Tim Connolly. He is third in scoring for US born players in the NHL, 25th overall, and he wasnt even named to the team as an ALTERNATE!!

I was going to say St. Louis when I saw the title to this thread, before I opened it. Connolly is a deadly player too, though, if he can stay healthy. Good to see that this year, I'll have more confidence in him if he puts 2 seasons in a row together.

To be fair, Connolly went on his maniac scoring pace after the team was already set. I think he'd make the team over Pavelski if they had it to do over again, but obviously he's very injury prone and streaky, not to mention he really only has a logical place as a top-2 center, no point in having him on the 3rd or 4th line really. Who knows, maybe someone will get hurt and they'll take him along, I don't believe rosters are locked quite yet. It would be nice to have another Sabre to root for but to be honest I think Burke made the correct call at the time. Timmy is surprising everyone with his durability this season.

Thomas Vanek!
Good call, I forgot that Austria didn't qualify. If he becomes a US citizen (or dual citizen) at some point, is he still ineligible for the US team because he's played for Austria in the past?

I know the idea is to name the best player currently who isn't in the Olympics but I think two years from now we may look back and say it was Tyler Myers. I think that kid has Norris Trophies in his future.

It really, really sucks that he took the Team Canada route.

Tyler Myers is a God. He'll win the Calder this year, and be an absolute force on the Limidonks' blue line for some 6 year span.
I will trade you a third round pick in 2012 for him.

I heard a rumour that the Sabres organization actually paid Burke and Co. not to pick Connolly. They love the way he's playing and knew that he would get injured immediately upon being named to the Olympic roster.
