I'm home from Vegas and back at work. My last day there I was already sick of it and ready to get out. Now that I'm back at work I wish I was back there. To quote Rdog, this is the sickness of Vegas. But back to the beginning. I set out from the great seaside metropolis on thursday afternoon. As the skyline of L.A. disappeared in the rearview and the waves of heat radiated off my windshield the pink desert sky slowly transformed itself into a vision of interlocking snakes and lines of colorful energy. Note to self: do not stop to eat roadside cactus until well after Barstow. cuadro1.jpgI arrived in the evening and checked into my suite at MGM Grand. There are two things this economy is great for: vegas hotel rooms and getting science grants. For less than $100 per night I had an awesome suite on the 24th floor with expansive windows looking out onto the strip. The view was awesome. One of the reasons I like to stay at MGM is because I like their poker room. It doesn't get much mention around here, but I think it has a nice atmosphere, and is not closed in like many of the poker rooms in vegas, its in an open circular area right next to the Lion Habitat. Pretty cool to play poker with lions roaring in the background. I stopped by to say hi to the lion, before putting my name on the list for $1/$2. The Lionphoto1243964672858.jpg( My photos are very sporadic, I'm not the type to snap at everything, I do it randomly every once in a while, and iPhone pics are not the greatest. ) But anyways, I played my first session and it went pretty well. By 3 am I was up a buyin or so and went a went to the Stage Deli right next to the poker room for some matzoh ball soup. This was one of the high points of my trip. ( is that lame? I was sitting there thinking how great vegas was that I could play poker until 3am and still get an excellent bowl of matzoh ball soup. i think I am supposed to be having that thought as I do a line of coke off a stripper? maybe next trip I'll make an adjustment. I feel like I let down IQCrash big time. )The MGM Poker Roomphoto1243965488525.jpgFriday. I woke up late and took a walk down the strip. Holy shit it is hot. Probably over 100 degrees. I vow that this is the last time I will intentionally go outside during the day. Friday night I sit down for another session at MGM and end up playing until 7AM. It was not a great session poker-wise; I lost, but it was really enjoyable experiencing the cast of characters coming and going. This is the other great thing about poker in Vegas compared with L.A. In L.A. its the same mix of old fat white guys and Vietnamese problem gamblers. In vegas, you get so much more. We had a young girl all coked up on her way back from the club who could just not stop giving her money away. There was a nice guy from NY on my left who I became friendly with. My favorite was this kid who sat down a little after midnight who looked like he was no older than 12. I'm not exaggerating. Everyone at the table jokingly asked for him to be carded, which he was. He was 21 and 5 minutes old. Kid had waited at the poker room until the minute of his birthday and sat down with $40. Gotta respect his values; some guys wait at the bar to get their first legal beer, but this guy wanted to play poker. We called him McLovin, and a few hours later when he left he was up almost $600. Happy Birthday, McLovin. Saturday. Woke up at about 2 or 3, headed down to sample the Grand Buffet which I got free with my room. Not bad. Decided to sit by the pool and read for a while. Sounds pleasant, right? Of course I wasn't imagining what the Vegas pool scene is like. Jesus. It was like Spring Break out there. Hard to sit and read your book in the middle of a Girls Gone Wild video. The Poolphoto1243964729481.jpg Saturday night I met some FCP people at the Hofbrauhaus to celebrate Acid_Knight's birthday. There were probably about 30 people there, some familiar faces and some I hadn't met before. I'm not gonna try and recall everyone who was there because I would surely leave some out. The place is like the disneyland version of a Bavarian beer garden, with long benches, huge steins of beer, a guy blowing a long Riccolla-style horn, and a waitresses who strike the patrons asses with wooden paddle. :record-scratch-sound: Yes, that's right... I'm not sure this is an authentic German custom, but it was interesting nonetheless and before the night was over Acid Knight had taken the paddle. Hofbrauhausphoto1243965172235.jpgAt one point there was a stein holding contest. The object is to hold your arm out with a full mug of beer for as long as possible. The FCP representative in this competition was Troyomac and he looked ready to go all the way. photo1243965455589.jpgAll the way to last place. That's right, Ray was the first one to drop the mug. I guess his true strength lies not in the upper body. Sunday Woke up late again, met pocktdeuces at the Bellagio for lunch. A very good burger for a little snack bar type place. Jesse seemed to be crushing the competition at the Bellagio. I left him there and went across the street for a quick session at Planet Hollywood where I met a cop who patrols the boardwalk in Venice Beach. (background: the vb in my name is for venice beach) Although he was not familiar with my dreadlock dog, so I'm a bit suspicious that he really gets the Venice shift very often. Later that night it was time for the FCP Scott S. & Friends tournament at the Hard Rock. I had never been to the HR before. It was pretty nice. There was some crazy pool party going on so the place was filled with ridiculous amounts of women in heels + bikinis. The poker tourney only got about 14 people, but the upside to that was that it went quickly and I was able to talk to almost everyone there. Except GetSprung, since he was at the other table and busted out early. Was hoping to learn some spells before I left, but oh well. Clockwise from Seat 1: Nutzbuster, Trussdude, Merby, The Lobster, The hands of dt1313, and the arms of Oziumrulesphoto1243965682866.jpgCardcore busted out first and we allowed him a rebuy which brought the prize pool to the $1500 necessary for a WSOP seat. I eventually got short and shoved AK, was called by gilbertology and Oziumrules. Gil had 66, but Ozi won with the monster KT. The poker gods were trying to repay him for the cell phone debacle, and I was out in 6th place. While the rest of the table played out I got a chance to talk to Balloon Guy, who is just as cool in person as he seems online. Those of you who read the political forum know that he and I are on opposite sides of most issues, so I really enjoyed talking with him. After GoStags took down the tourney, nutz, ozi, BG, gilbertology, sandwedge, gostags, truss, and I got some dinner at the stakehouse in hard rock. I thought the food was pretty good, environment a bit odd, but all in all a decent meal and a good end to my weekend. In the morning I packed up and hit the road again. The great pyramid faded into the desert behind me. It was nice seeing all of you again and meeting those of you I had not met before; as always FCP is good people. Special thanks to Scott for setting up the tourney.

Nice trip report!Ray wearing sunglasses inside? He must be a big deal!I need to get to the Hard Rock this summer. That "pool party" goes on all day I hear. $75 to get in if you are not staying there though.I love MGM too. The only downside is that it is hard to walk down the strip during the summer because of the heat. The casinos in the middle (Bellagio, Caesers, Bills, IP, Mirage, PH, etc.) are right in the middle, so you don't have to do much walking when you stay in one of those casinos.

Yeah this is true. Although there is the monorail, but I never think to use it.

The sunglasses were just on for the competition to honour Fluffdog who actually wore his inside during the whole meal, and also to intimidate my competition because I know how weak I really am!Sweet trip report Jonas, I enjoyed the way you wrote it with sweet pics in between!

I'm quite upset you didn't take me up on the couch offer. Instead Seth took a nap on it. Poor decision.

Was supposed to be Ray, Seth and I all doing the Stein holding thing. They maxed out in entries I guess. Ray was the lucky one to get picked, so me and Seth did our own on the side. I won. :club:
