*was* Moving To Vegas...

Recommended Posts

Glad that didn't happen.I ran particular bad of the past couple of months and played without a set bankroll. Money would be used to pay for rent/a car repair would also be used to play poker.Obviously, I ran horribly and just about went busto. Good news is I found leaks in my game that I must have overlooked during the years. I'd have to say out of my loses over a 2 month stretch, 60% came from legit bat beat/coolers etc and the rest was me donking off because I couldn't handle losing.Basically when I lose a big pot that put me down on the night when I was up, I'd be a steam-monkey and inevitbly donk off the rest of my buy-in that night. I simply can not get up from the table in these situations. I am the fish at this point. When I'm losing, I...-Call too frequently OOP with marginal hands, without pot odds-Can't get up from the table when I know I should-Try to run over the table, which is basically playing into my opponent's hands considering this is what they expect me to do.I think certain types of people shouldn't play (cash) poker because they can not handle the swings, and I am one of them. Once I rebuild, I'll still take a trip to Vegas, and I may try to start a bankroll for tournaments. Otherwise, I've pretty much demonstrated I can not be a consistent cash game player. I lack discipline.FWIW, i am one of the few who actually posted when they went broke (even though I'm not literally broke), so go easy on me :club:-Steveftw the bankroll I operated on was small; a little bit more than 10 buy-ins at 1-2. I did have a couple winning sessions through out, and played 4-6 hours twice a week live.

What I try to do when im on tilt is get away and take some time off. I haven't played in a casino yet, but when I'm on tilt online ill just leave all my tables and watch some TV or something for about an hour and just get off tilt. Once I've done that I'll be good for another session.

Don't be embarrassed to have went busto. I went busto hundreds of times early on. Mistakes are how you learn and improve the leaks in your game. I think almost any serious poker player has been busto at some point in their career, so you should feel no shame posting that it happened.I am very much in the same boat as you when it comes to cash games. I find a great deal of success in MTT's and thats where the biggest percentage of my bankroll has come from. I think I can be a profitable cash game player, but I'm still learning as I go. It is also tough for me to stand up from a table after I have taken a couple sick beats. Everyone tends to start trying to do much (play too many hands, become overly aggressive, etc), but I have learned that when I reach that point, no matter how much it pains me, I HAVE to stop playing. I think the trick is finding something to do while you let your mind and focus recharge. I often utilize the self exclusion that pokerstars/tilt has. After a bad session where I donk off too much of my bankroll because I'm on tilt, I will ban myself for 7 days so that I can mentally rebound from the frustration of losing. I usually turn to something else I'm passionate about to pass the time. I'll put in more hours at work (yes I do enjoy my job :club: ) or shoot pool, play Counterstrike, etc. After a week off, you will be amazed at how focused and ready you are to get back to the grind.I hope this helps you and I wish you best of luck on your Vegas tripJosh

Props to OP for posting honestly. I have a theory about this. I think you have to be able to reset your mind like this ^^^RSHAWK^^^ while the dealer is shuffling (so to speak), because the definition of a bad beat is getting the money in good and losing to long odds. When this has happened to us, it means we did the right thing (usually), and it also indicates we are involved in a good game (and playing with the right villains). But we have to be able to reset our minds and keep playing well right then and there, because there is an opportunity in front of us if we have the maturity to take advantage of it. I can't tell you how many times I've taken my chips back within an hour of a bad beat. In live poker, sometimes you don't know if you're going to see the villain again, so you have to recover quickly. Online, I guess you can "buddylist" someone and find them again. But tilt control in the live po is a weapon. Use it.

I agree 100% My advice was I guess more for those days that no matter what you can't win (MTT or Cash) lose every flip, people are hitting 2 and 3 outers, etc. If I know that someone simply got a miracle river card to beat me, I don't give up right away, because I completely agree that this is EXACTLY the type of person we want to play against, but if this happens multiple times in a session it can be tough to keep that mindset of playing solid poker. When I know I am starting to lose my edge over the bad player, thats when I take the time off.I always do take notes on the players so even if I feel like I'm losing my edge, I can come back later on and usually find the player again, but MT has a very valid point in that in order to become an all around player, the mentality you have at the table is a huge part of how successful you will be. I'm still trying to master keeping my emotions in check when playing.

The issue for me is minimizing my loss during a downswing. Normally I can take some bad beats and shrug them off, but not in the middle of the a losing streak.I feel assaulted, and obviously I'll remind myself to leave my emotions out of it, but it doesn't help. At this point I should leave, but I can't imagine leaving down when I was just up. So I steam, and everyone can see it. Before taking this inevitable beat, I actually play pretty well. Fwiw, this has been the worst run of cards I ever had. PPs QQ+ have probably lost 80% of the time regardless of how I play them. When I finally have a hand to get value from, it seems the worst card in the deck hits the turn. LOLUntil I can prove to myself I have the discipline to leave a game with money when I know I'm done, I can not play.

Dude, WE ARE THE SAME except that your an 23yrs old American and Me a 19yrs Old Canadian loll enough said, I feel exactly like you when I lose because I read that human mind wants to go even when we lose and that's what seperate long term winners and long term losers. I really want to work my mind to toss off those bad beats and bad runs to improve my long term wins. Just take a look at my thread to see how I lost my entire bankroll in a single night...Here It's awful..Best of luck dude ! At least I know that I'm not alone in this situation.

I'm the opposite. Cash games are easier "emotionally" on me. I enjoy the occasional tourny, but I couldn't play them every day, as I could cash games.Tom.

i really appreciate the honesty here. its hard to admit the leaks in our games sometimes and its even harder to know when we need to take a break and actually do it. i'm a cash player for the most part myself and have a lot more leaks in my tournament play than i do cash. i love the swing (as long as i'm not completely broke) so i think thats why i continue to play (and generally be up). anyway - good luck to you. if you really wanted to move to vegas you should still do it imo. work on your leaks there. =)
