  1. 1. Facing a big bet, you ask your opponent if they will show you if you fold. What have you usually observed.

    • They show the hand, it's the nuts.

I was just wondering what it usually means when a person agrees to show you a hand if you will fold, if it means anything. What have you guys observed? Are they usually strong or weak?

From someone who knows nothing, it's usually a total bluff/ busted draw (if they've been better throughout, this is more true)If someone knows that you'll think this, perhaps they're double bluffing you..Basically, you need to know your opponent.

Actually if YOU ask and your opponent says yes, it usually is a good hand that more than likely has you beat. However if YOUR opponent first says, "I'll show." It's usually a bluff.

QFTAlso you should add in your post that we are assuming your opponent HAS agreed to show. Most people dont agree in the first place.

It's simple. If they agree to show their hand, it is because they do not want you to call. Not always true, but in my experience it has been extremely profitable to call. This applies when they offer and it applies when I ask if they will show. ESPECIALLY against poor/new players.

In the subheading to this post I put..."when they say yes". So, of course this thread is assuming they agreed to show.

They say they will show because they don't want you to call out of pure curiosity. Its a bluff, or a weak hand.Of course, maybe they know you know the above statement and acutally want a call. They have a monsterOr maybe they know that you know that they know the above statement. So they actually don't want a call, its a bluff. And so on.

I think that's very interesting. What would their intention be in telling you "I'll show" first? Are they trying to make you think they're comfortable? Very interesting.

So you're saying it's just one of poker's enigmas and is very situational according to opponent.

Sometimes it might be that they have the better hand, but not by much, so they don't want you to get lucky and maybe hit. Or maybe they like you and actually want to save you some chips. But, I think mainly due to the fact that you are beat, but they don't want you to get lucky on them so they would rather have you fold and take whatever is in the pot right then and there.

i'm a HUGE talker at the tables, and I use the line, "you're going to see it either way," a ton... and it really could go either way with me.When someone asks me if I'll show and I say yes, it doesn't mean a thing. I could have the nuts too. If I offer to show, it's the same thing. Doesn't necessarily make a difference.
