Do Men Play Differenly Around Women?

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this topic has been discussed in the past here, but I was wondering, when playing against female opponents, (for men) do you think your game changes? On a few occasions I notice that men will slow their game down around a female....but, I imagine some probably get more aggressive thinking that women are always weak. (For women) Do you think men play differently around you than they would another man, soley based on sex?

I don't bluff women. They're "read" and "call" machines.

Suber: Do you think playing against women is different than playing against men? If so, who do you prefer to play against?Jennifer Harman: I do think it’s different playing against women than men. I think women are more instinctual and can pick up certain tells on you. I prefer playing against men because I simply have more experience with men at the table.link
Wired WomenResearch shows that women are becoming more aggressive at the poker tableIn his book, The Essential Difference: The Truth About the Male and Female Brain, University of Cambridge professor Simon Baron-Cohen concludes that men and women do show different personality traits at the poker table, and these traits can greatly influence how the members of the two sexes play cards. Also, Baron-Cohen identifies three brain types - the female brain, the male brain and the balanced brain: * In the female brain, called the E-type, empathizing is the dominant characteristic. * In the male brain, called the S-type, systemizing is the dominant characteristic. * In the balanced brain, called the B-type, both characteristics are finely balanced.According to Baron-Cohen, on average more women have E-type brains and more men have S-type brains. Translated that means women tend to be better at deciphering non-verbal communication and picking up subtle nuances. Other conclusions: * Introduced to new situations, women would rather stand and watch, while men waste no time in getting in on the action. * Males show more direct aggression while women tend to show indirect aggression. * Women are becoming more aggressive.link

That was a thinly-veiled shot at Jennifer Tilly, not a generalization. If anything, the majority of the women I have played live against have been very aggresive and refuse to lay down hands. I tend to rarely bluff women on the poker table. Personally, I think gender has little to do with poker. A good player is a good player. The only time gender really applies is if a women is marginally talented yet marketable, they get repeated bookings on Poker After Dark. For every female tournament player that is a force, there are 5 television props getting endorsed to chip dump early stages of high-buy in tournaments while wearing Poker Site colors for the cameras.

For me, I dont know why, but yes. I feel every like every bet from a female is sneeeaaaakkky as hell and always a bluff, but when they show their set, I cry a little more inside.

I can never tell for sure who's female online, but in person I play $5/10 limit and $1/2 NL at the casinos I go to. I have yet to run into a woman who could play decently. The women I've played against have either been calling stations or so tight they can't get enough value out of good hands to turn a profit at the end of the day.
