What's Up With Cardplayer Wsop Coverage

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else find that the coverage of the events on Cardplayer this year are terrible compared to last year? Last year, there were updates a lot more often (every 10-15 minutes), than there are this year (every hour - just a paragraph or 2 summary). Does anyone know why there has been a change? Does anyone know of a better online source for WSOP coverage?

Its probably just slower because there are more events and more things to do this year.

I'll pimp it - texasholdem.com. Run by FCPers, they have great updates on pros and FCPers that are playing.

I just found out why actually. The WSOP slapped on some serious handcuffs this year. We just had a long meeting with all the WSOP/Bluff officials, who bought exclusive access this year. Well apparently they did a horrible job at telling everyone the rules. We are only allowed one post an hour, and can't post live hand updates. Pokernews and WSOP.com has exclusive access to the live coverage, and we are only allowed to do articles/summaries once an hour. It's insane. The PokerPages editor is pretty much losing his mind.

There ya go.Actually, I see nothing wrong with this (other than the poor cmmunication of the rules). The coverage of any event is a commodity.

Wow that really sucks. So much for our FCP player updates huh?

Thanks for the info Suited, and othersThat's pretty sad. Maybe I just have to get used to it, but I just checked out the bluff site, and I must say I like cardplayers overall presentation a lot better - just easier to move from one tournament to another, etc., etc. And maybe it's just a glitch, but the bluff site seems slow as hell right now. Maybe they weren't prepared for the volume of traffic to their site.

Sounds like it's time to turn in the press badge and go for guerrilla coverage. Bluff only owns press access. Unless WSOP throws you out of the casino, they can't stop anyone from talking about the event. For instance, if my player friends (not that I have any...) text me with updates, I can publish them however I want. Or, if I do one article/summary an hour, my friends who have user-publishing privileges (hint hint) on my site could publish live updates that I don't moderate.

I'll still update FCP and try to get them into the hourly updates. Right now i'm just trying to figure out how exactly to write these things up. You almost need a theme every hour, but that's not really easy to come up with.Right now the limit tourney is just a slow grind, not much going on ya know?

This sounds super depressing. Maybe you'll have to splurge and find a way to bribe a bluff intern for their press badge. At least then you can rail the tourneys in their later stages instead of relying on other sites to give coverage. That's a real bummer. Silly bluff.

That cant be legal. As soon as it happens it is fact and news. They tried to the same thing with chess a while ago but it was challengend in court and they lost. I will look up that a bit later and post links.edit: i got this from chessbase.com"The problem, as various lawyers explained to us, is that once a chess move is made on the board it becomes a fact, news. It is a piece of information. This view was reinforced by a 1997 legal case in which the NBA went after Motorola for broadcasting real-time basketball scores and lost. Commentary (chat, audio, video) can certainly be protected, but once a move is played it is freely available to the world at large and that includes other chess servers."

http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cgi-bin/getc...t&no=967975Motorola and Sports Team Analysis and Tracking Systems ("STATS") appeal from a permanent injunction entered by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (Loretta A. Preska, Judge ) barring, inter alia , the sale of a handheld pager that displays updated scores and statistics of National Basketball Association games as they are played. The NBA and NBA Properties, Inc. cross-appeal from the district court's dismissal of its Lanham Act claim. We hold that Motorola and STATS have not unlawfully misappropriated NBA's property by transmitting "real-time" NBA game scores and statistics taken from television and radio broadcasts of games in progress. We therefore reverse on the misappropriation claim and vacate the injunction. On the cross-appeal, we affirm.

http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting/This is a link to the same coverage that bluff is using, but seems a lot quicker and easier to navigate.

I have to agree, and it sucks to say that. I heard the media situation last year was a total shiteshow so Harrahs must be looking to avoid that on top of charging a premium for exclusive coverage.*sniffle* our little baby is all grows up. It's probably a good thing for the game if you look at it from a big picture standpoint. Between the PPL and companies now having to bid against each other for media coverage, it's developing nicely into a sport.

Michael Craig posted about this in his Full Tilt blog, and wasn't real happy, either. Seems like one of the worst managed starts in recent WSOP history.

Golfers don't pay squat for entry fees. Neither should poker players. (In our dreams of course). I hope we can see the benefit of people bidding for the rights to cover this thing. We can at least hope that maybe one day the rake will go away.

We should all be drinking Milwaukees Best. God I hope that sponsorship deal expires soon. Maybe Colt 45 will outbid them. Mickey's Big Mouth? MeisterBrau?etc.
Yeah poker needs to ditch the redneck/white trash negative stigma that it can carry due to who sponsors it. Keeping fingers crossed that some big corporation has the balls to get behind the game.

You think that Ivey is paying for all of his own entry fees for this year's WSOP events? The "no name" golfers are paying their own way - no private jets - no 4 star hotels - no limos

But the no name poker players are paying not only the entry fee, but the associated rake. We're not looking to only discuss the top players in cards and golf -- we're looking to paint with a broad brush and discuss the overall situation. Much like Ivey and poker, Tiger is not paying his own entry fees anymore.

I have no idea if it's legal, but if we want to keep our press credentials, we gotta follow the rules. I agree that it seems pretty shady that someone could buy public info.
