  1. Which part of Obamacare are you concerned about? I'm no expert, but the bill isn't really aimed at doctors. It's an insurance company bill, and it sets regulations for what kinds of health insurance companies can offer and requirements for people obtaining insurance.
  2. "A Simple Answer" was the one that really grabbed me right away. But I really love the cohesiveness of the album, how the songs flow into each other, and how well-crafted and ornate the entire effort is.
  3. Okay, screw it. I started Infinite Jest last week (for the second time). But this time I have much more resolve. I'm already 250 pages in, and I have decent momentum. I've read a lot of Wallace's non-fiction "essays", which I loved. IJ is my first of his fiction. Obviously, it's challenging. I know a few of you have read it. Does anyone have any recommendations for keeping up with the characters and narratives? Should I be working hard to remember everyone and taking notes, or should I simply move through it under the assumption that some characters will stand out and some
  4. Okay, this video is cheap, but if you for some reason enjoy seeing really awkward clips of Romney, take a glance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJJKW7ea1oc&feature=youtu.be
  5. Well, by "work at CERN", I've really meant that I made a Lego CERN in my den and I spend most of my day playing with that. Does that count?
  6. I slightly disagree. Variance is a large factor in the decision, and the whole thing needs to first be mapped by a utility function. In other words, if I'm player A who makes 800K a year and we've missed half the season (ie, I lost 400K), I don't want to bet my mast 400K on a 50% chance of making some more money down the line vs making no money this season. Because I have a family to support, bills to pay, a mortgage on a house that is probably too expensive, etc. Obviously, for Ovechkin and Crosby and such, it's probably easier to risk $x now for a y% at earning $z later, but for ma
  7. Because it removes a citizen's right: the right to not carry a wallet. I thought conservatives were against removing rights for little gain. If everyone needs to carry an id, and I go out for a walk and don't bring my wallet, should I be liable for arrest?
  8. I think the people who are against the "papers please" law would be against that law as well. But thank you for pointing out another bad law (if it exists, which I actually doubt).
  9. The real problem that I have with Romney is his inability to elevate the tone of the conversation. Obama seems to have a strategy of only staying slightly above his opponent in terms of substance. So, because Romney has absolutely no substance to his campaign, he is allowing Obama to effectively give no information about his vision for the next 4 years. And the next 4 years for our country are crucial. This is the time when we should be having a rigorous debate about how to address the systemic economic issues that we're facing (from globalization, automization etc) and the medium-term is
  10. That's why those set theory and complex analysis books go flying off the shelves.
  11. heh!(Do they really use bags? I always hear people joke about it, but I've never seen it.)
  12. Not to be too pedantic, but nothing in the summary addressed "Why the political system is broken." It was more about, "our current politicians are morons." We all know they're morons, the hard part is making it so that morons aren't so consistently elected and that the smart people who are elected don't end up doing moronic things when in office.
  13. Though, it's unclear how the fraction of wars started in the name of religion addresses the overall issue that the central belief structures of all religions are false.
  14. They did it with the stuff bear's eyeball in the pool thing, so I wouldn't be too surprised if it's from the very end of the show.
  15. But, the cap hit seems to make it only a 1 year deal. If they want to resign him, can they really pay him less? (Unless they structure a longer term deal, I guess).
  16. Yeah, I like the Semin signing for Carolina. It's a pretty low risk, high reward situation for the team, and I think there will be less pressure on him now that the Staal(s) line gives the team a pretty sustained primary scoring threat (unlike in Washington where he HAD to live up to being the second best winger for the team to work).
  17. Oh, yeah, I'm really liking the insightful conversation that's taking place here.
  18. Uh, those guys know you have Crosby and Malkin, right?
