Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

I'm not sure as to what I should do, so I'm asking you guys what you think. (I'm not going to commit to what you guys say necessarily, just looking for input)Less than a year ago, I moved my family to Florida from NY, primarily because I was tired of paying the ridiculuous taxes there, secondarily becuase the weather just sucks. I like Florida. The weather is nice most of the time, and I haven't been subjected to a hurricane as yet. I live an hour from a major airport , housing is relatively cheap, and we were going to buy a place once the NY house sold. The kids are in really good schools and they are happy.Well, the NY house is now sold (hopefully), and we're in a quandry. I've been playing poker for well over two years now, and it's been good, but FL poker as a whole has been decent, but not a goldmine. I go away a few times a year to play elsewhere, and that had been decent. However, I make a decent amount of money online, but it can always be better.We are considering going west, to somewhere in California. I like it there, my wife was born in LA, and my son (age12) would really like to be there. Can I get some input and suggestions for people who live out west, preferably from those with kids?What do you guys think?

from a kid who was born on the east coast then moved to the west coast, i would say if you can afford it go for it. growing up in california i think is the best place possible, because of all the opportunities you have and what you can experience. the diversity and differences in the state really allow you a cultured upbringing imo.

a real reply now.california is expensive like ny but not quite as much. I grew up in norcal. traffic is awful anywhere in cali. public schools will range from crap to really good depending on where you live. in my area living on one side of a major street determines this. (though I have really no idea about socal) I assume with the poker you'll be in socal so I can't help much really. the good thing about california residence is when/if your kid goes to college, he'll have a wide selection of the best public schools in the nation

No offense, but asking a poker forum if you should do something as big as MOVING YOUR FAMILY and expecting real responses is kind of ridiculous. Talk it out with your family, not some online poker nerds that you've never met (me included).But you should compromise and move to the Midwest.

For weather and scenery, California is the best.Southern Cal is the best place in the country.Palm Springs is still relatively affordable..nice houses start about $400K, private schools are still best though. $5K a year-$12K a year(5 indian casinos within 20 miles all spread poker) Vegas is 3.5 hour drive, beach 2 hours, mountains 1 hour. Tram ride 15 minutes to 10,000 feet. 3 months of hot,but dry, 9 months of blue skies and great weather. Over 110 Golf Courses!San Diego is the best weather anywhere, but you'll need more like $750K to live in a decent area. Sun comes out everyday at 11ish near the coast.LA has some nice areas, some rat holes. Others would know LA cities better than me. But traffic is bad everywhere in LA.Beach houses start at a million for the really run down ones.But we have Arnold, which is nice.I just got back from NY, stayed in mid town, loved it but why anyone lives there is beyond me.

You in Palm Springs? Very nice, my family has a house there. Probably one of the more amazing places in the country to live.AASnake, I would highly recommend Palm Springs. Hopefully you're a golfer (golf capitol of the U.S.). There's a reason some of the world's most famous (Bob Hope, Sinatra, Harry Caray) called it home at least three months a year. Don't know too much about the schools, but the environment couldn't be better and you wouldn't be around the stress of the big cities unless you jumped in the car for awhile.

PS is what we all call the entire Coachella Valley, it's really 9 cities in the whole valley, with about 300K total people spread out in no more than 60K per city. I would guesstiment that the population is 40% Hispanic, 10% gay, average age 45+. A ton of people own second or third homes here so we have alot of wealth here. The Rolls Royce dealership is the largest volume dealership in the country, if not the world.PS is the oldest, South PS is nicest, but the city is kind of lost in yesterdays. Great air musuem, water park, street fair every Thursday. 3 Cigar stores, I hang out at Tinderbox alot.Cathedral City was where all the gardeners lived for a while, but now it's more family style. Heavily hispanic areas, and some major gay areas. 1 cigar storeRancho Mirage is old money, but there are some nice areas with younger crowds. I live in Rancho Mirage, Mission Hills Country Club. Nice club. 1 nice cigar storePalm Desert is the real moving force in the desert, lots of nice homes, lots of shopping, city is well run. Best city overall for families. 1 Cigar storeIndian Wells is really rich. They tried to ban the sale of lottery tickets when they first came out cause you only win $1 million. True story. Lot of private banks, want a withdrawal, call them and thy come to your house with the cash. No cigar storesLa Quinta was a rat hole, but has made serious strides into becoming a player. There are some great country clubs, restaurants and housing developements there now. 1 bad cigar store.Indio is run down, anything east of Indo is farming. He is correct about the ever-increasing homosexual population.Street fair every Thursday=the nuts.Correct about the wealth and 2nd/3rd homes. My house sits there 10 months a year and gets used by about five people in the family during a two-month span.We're in the older part of the city. Mostly older people, in fact almost all older people the last time I was there. Excellent fine dining and also the best burger joint in the entire world as far as I'm concerned (Tyler's).Please tell me you golf. It would be such a waste to not take advantage of that part of the town, it's pretty much the biggest attraction.We live in Canyon County Club, the northern part of the city.BG, We're probably right down Ramon (west) from you.

i haven't read any responses (i can only assume the ridiculous).i assume by west coast, you mean l.a. specifically. i for one would choose not to raise kids in the actual city of l.a. i would opt for burbank or the valley (which are further away from the casinos), but your best bet would be orange county (also 45 minutes to the casinos).in my experience "l.a. children" are a little jaded (my guess is similar 20-something marriage rates to NYC), the l.a. public schools are bad, and the city itself is such a fantasy land, i just don't picture it being the ideal for a family.if NLHE is your game, then it's gotta be l.a. casinos all the way. my and a floor woman at the bike (very very knowledgeable) discussed at length the profitability of the 5-10 game there. she said 7K a month, but i think it could easily be 10K, and the commerce is often better. another great great idea is san diego. talk to socal_j, i think he does very well at the SD casinos and the city is awesome w/ people generally more down to earth. if your going to the series we can talk more about what southern california has to offer or you can PM me.goodluck.

If you can afford it, I'd try to live in Santa Monica. That place is sooo nice compared to the rest of LA. Then you just have to hop on the 5 to get to the Bike or Commerce. Actually most places along the beach areas arent too bad except Long Beach. Stay away from that hell hole. If you can deal with the infestation of Mexicans, there are plenty of places to live.
