Did I make a good deal?

Recommended Posts

We had snow day yesterday so one of my friends had a small 10 person tourney, 25 $ buy in. At the beginign I was not catching anything but with shortanded 5 ppl table I was able to grab some small pots and maintain my stack. When we combined at 8 ppl I was shortstacked. After catching some cards and opponents being bored :D gotta love that lol, I was large chip leader with 4 ppl left. With 3 ppl left I lost a lrg portion of my stack to a very good player when an ace hit and i held KK. Before the 3rd player got out I lost anoter large pot when he made a nice play and got me to fold my 1010 with a board of 7 8 j K J and he showed Q 9. He took out 3rd place and now were heads up. He called my bluff on the river with K and a board of AJ10 J A. he now had a lrg chip lead. After 30 mins we hadnt really gotten anywhere and he had 7.5k ish and i had 3.5k ish in chips.Payout was 125-75-50. I offered a split of 110 to him and 90 to me. Was this good? I have never been involved in a deal like this at the end of a small tourney. I read Sklansky's book where he states something along the lines that when two players make a deal, the shortstack often gets the worst of it. It wasnt too much monetary differnce either way, but did i lose EV on this deal, assuming we are equal players? Thanks

a good way to assess EV on deals is to look at the deal in comparision to a chipcount deal. Chip count deals are arguably the most fair, and the way they work is both players get second place money, and the remaining prize pool is divided up based on chip counts. I.e, you both get $75, then you split the remaining 50 in a 7.5:3.5 ratio. do the math, and this works out to you getting $90.90... your deal was pretty damn close.

So yesterdya I as sitting at a 3/6 full kill B&m game. At this casino they offer a $250 high hand jackpot every hour. With 7 tables in play it usually takes quads or a str8 flush to win but there is the occasion where a full boat takes it.Case in point. With 20 minutes left in the hour I make jacks over queens, at the time I did not notice that eights over aces was the high hand. I was lucky to get some callers who rivered a str8 after I turned the boat. So I flip over the winner getting ready to take the pot when the dealer says "High Hand!" I was in shock and imediatley said, as a joke, "Who wants to buy it?" Figuing that it would NOT hold up. A guy at my table offers me $50 bux to buy it. I politley decline but ask if he will give me 50 now 50 later. He agreed and we watched the clock tick. Do you all think this is stoopid of me to take either 50 (automatically) or 100 (if it holds). Or should I have just ridden out the 20 minutes for the WHOLE 250 (I woulda tipped the dealer 50 of it). I'll post what happened a bit later.

Hmm, 20 minutes left... I have no idea, I wish the casino I played at would do that though... I like the idea. Well, if you were up at the time and didn't really need the extra 50, I'd say wait, but if the 50 would get you even or something, then go ahead and sell it, and see if you can get 50 later if it holds up.

Well, I think it was a bad idea and here is my reasoning ...You had 20 minutes left in your half an hour, right? From what I can find online, its about 1 in 70,000 to get a straight flush, and about 1 in 4,000 to hit quads. 7 tables, let's assume 9 players a table for arguments sake, so that's 62 players (63 - yourself). I don't know for sure, but you see like 30-40 hands/hour in a B&M casino? Let's assume 30 to make the math easier, but that means that each player will see 10 more hands so that's 630 hands that will be dealt. So it seems like the odds are in your favor that it will hold up. But then again, its always nice to take some guaranteed money :D

My reasoning is really that Jacks over Queens is PRETTY weak. With your reasoning outta 600 hands or so the chances of someone making a queen king, ace or a better jack fullhouse is better. I have never seen a hand that bd hold personally there. I figured I was guaranteed 50 bux for sure and if the weak hand does hold I make another 50 bux. I was already up 150 for the session and REALLy thought hard about going for the big one, but really believed it would NOT hold. A few other players said the same thing that I should take the gauranteed $$ over the bigger payout. Here is what ended up happpening though. The twenty minutes seemed like it went forever and I was honestly rooting for it to hold up. With 2 minutes left at the same table two players held Ace 8 suited and with a board of :diamondsa: :clubsa: :clubs8: :spadesrag: :heartsrag: both players made Aces over 8's, and they split the 250. :D My thought process was to gamble for 150 less if it held up was and make a gaurantee of 50 bux no matter what. I ended up ahead in the situation rather then with nothingand tht was fine by me. I HONESTLY would of been happy either way. :-)Thanks for the opinions though guys and keep em coming. If you have been in a similar situation what did you do or what have you seen in your experiences :?: :?:

Just squeaked it out! Good job then. I bet they were a little pissed they had to split it though.. I'm sure they're both looking at their hands thinking, HA! I get the pot plus $250! Oh well.

Yeah, I did forget to include the chances of someone making a higher boat, which I have no interest in figuring out (not like I could), so when you take that into account, its really not too bad of an idea to take the 50 now/50 later. If I really thought it through, and was at the table in your place, I very well might have taken it as well.

No worries man I appreciate the input though. If it had been Aces over something I would have turned him down and gone for the gusto figuring it might hold up.Honestly I think if it had held up I would not have gotten mad because I was really rooting for it to hold so we both made some good $$. It was fun for the 18 minutes it did hold though to have some of the dealers I know razz me about such a weak hand. They all know how tight I am and love to give me a hard time. It was fun to have other players shake their heads to in disbelief that it almost held.

To the original poster. I think the split was a good deal. Something i do with my friends is to take a split of most of the money and play it out for the rest. He keeps his chip advantage and if he was meant to get more than he does, either way u both end up with more than 2nd place money

Me personally wont split unless I get 100 percent. I know if a player asks for splpit, he really doesnt wanna play anymore, so I can take advantage of that

yea i bet you get that kind of deal often... "lets chop it up" "ok ill take 100% you take 0%" "ok seems fair".there are a million valid reasons to take a chop, 'not wanting to play' is usually not one of them. if anyone wants to see the fallacy of this, do a lil search for xxxeddies views on calling a bet, raise, and two reraises all in with QQ midway through a large buyin NL tourney for your whole stack :D
