televise the big game?

Recommended Posts

Do you think there will ever be a time when the "Big Game" is televised in any form?I mean, if the huge viewer ratings claimed are to be believed, surely there is an audience to watch the best players in the world playing for cash. I'm sure that if ESPN was able to stump up the $3million or whatever for the Tournament of Champions freeroll then they could whack a fair bit into the pockets of the Big Game's regulars? On a side note, does anyone know how the prizepool for the ToC was cut, and what was the payout for Poker Superstars?

There is no way they would televise the Big Game. TV poker is only popular with hole cameras, and the top players would not want to give away their strategies for the big cash games.

it will never happen. first of all, limit holdem is not particularily enthralling to spectators. you cant go all in. no one gets eliminated. secondly, neither beal nor any of the corp. players will allow their hole cards to be revealed, and beal has in the past made it very clear he does not want any media attention. They couldnt possibly pay them enough money to make it worthwhile, considering the sums changing hands on every blind steal.

I don't think he is talking about the Beal challenge, just the regular Big Game at the Bellagio. But I agree with everything else you said.

I don't think so because I don't think it has the mass viewing appeal the tournaments do. Multiple game types, very exclusive set of players, long sessions, and popular players losing a ton of their own money. I think part of the allure of televised tournament poker is most of the time anyone with the cash can enter and gives people the impression they can do it. Look how ordinary accountant Chris Moneymaker winning increased the popularity winning his first live tourney.

There is no way the regulars would agree to such a thing, even if they were paid. All the people who attend that game regularly are rich enough that they don't need the television money, and old enough that they don't want to be tv stars. Guys like Doyle, Chip, Chau Giang, Men, et al. would not want thier private game opened up to the world for discussion.Even if the casino strikes a deal, those guys would just move the game elsewhere.

While televising the "big game" would not happen, at live at the bike (an online live- 5 minute delayed webcast) they show low limits and high stakes limit hold' em (300-600). Have saw Ted Forrest, Chad Brown and Jerry Buss in these games. They show the hole cards, and wire the players up.

I can understand the reasons listed, but I have a couple of questions:1. I assume that a few rich fish play in the massive game is this correct? And if so, surely a few more would be made aware of the game with its TV exposure = larger +EV for players.2. If these players are so adverse to hole cams why do they play all of these televised tournaments and why agree to things such as Poker Superstars?3. Finally, slightly off-topic but mentioned in original post, how much money did Fox pay for Poker Superstars and how was it distributed between players? I heard winner got $1mill but they each put up $400k?? That means that they must have all made money when you consider TV rights? Thanks

TV may not be practical for stated reasons, but I see a fairly good documentary potential surrounding the big game. It would be able to take you into preparation, mentality, etc. Seeing hole cards would not be necessary in that medium. Good documentarian would be able to build the drama in other ways. probably in areas not pertaining to the game itself. Just thinking out loud.

1. i think most of the people with disposable income for 4k 8k games know where to look already.2. TOURNAMENTS DONT MATTER. why cant you people understand this? the 1st place prize money in most tournaments is changing hands hourly in the big game.3. I dont even understand what you are trying to say here, but i'll disagree for spite.
