BigDMcGee 3,352
So I'm watching the 'Leafs/caps game tonight. Drawn in, as the casual fan that I am, by Ovetchkin, and he delivered in like a minute. And in the moments before the score, the announcers were talking about the Capital's coach, and how he coached in the AHL, and how he's "Earned the respect" of his team. Now, I am one who is a firm believer that coaching matters little.. that if you have great players, great talent, you're going to win, and rarely is a team where coaching makes a difference at all. So I was curious what you thought the importance of the hockey coach is serge, how much of a difference do you think they make? As a casual observer, I'd rank the sports, in order of coaching importance as 1) Football 2) Basketball 3) Hockey 4) Soccer 5) Baseball.
Zach6668 513
I'd probably rank hockey ahead of basketball, but really don't know anything about basketball.
Ottawa_Biatch 288
I can't say anything about soccer because I don't know the sport. But if I had to rank them.1) Football2) Baseball3) Basketball4) HockeyI ranked baseball ahead of the other two, because there's so many things the coach can control, such as which pitchers to use, which batters, when to intentional walk, when to steal a base, hit and run, putting the shift on. So many things. I find basketball and hockey are more spur of the moment sports. Coaching is still a big part, but no where near as much as football and baseball. I rank basketball ahead of hockey, just because when coaches design plays for the end of the game, coaching in basketball is a lot more controlled in terms of the play. ( Value over league average replacement coach). It seems to me the situations that you hit and run, intentionally walk, steal, shift are extremely basic and that few coaches would have advantages over any other coach. Hell, with the advancement of statistical analysis in the game, even when to pull a pitcher and what pitcher to replace him with could almost be automated. It seems to me that coaches in basketball and hockey are constantly having to make replacements, judging who should or shouldn't be on the ice/floor, who should or shouldn't play with each other, for a night and for a season. And in basketball they have to design plays, and offensive/defensive philosophies, so you can actually see a big difference in the play between a team like D'antoni's Knicks, and Mike Brown's Cavs.
