Compugeekaments - Any Tips On Stopping Wireless From Fading In And Out?

Recommended Posts

I am getting royally sick and tired of going from 54MBs/sec down to 2MB/s, particularly when I hit a nut flush in a big pot and then my hand gets timed out. I have bought the wireless signal amplifier from D-link, but the connection still comes and goes.Is there anything better out there yet????????

What kind of wireless card do you have in your computer? Does it have the most current drivers installed? Do you have the same problems on other wireless networks?

Not sure. How can tell? Have not updated any drivers since install but have not been prompted to either (or is this the only piece of equipment in the free world that does not nag you anymore about upgrading your software?).

Where is your router located wrt you computer?
In the computer room on the 2nd level of a 4 level split. I usually sit on sofa in 3rd level with the laptop. Estimated distance (as crow flies, if could fly through walls - approx 50 feet, as a paper airplane would have to fly, about 80 feet). I thought that buying the damn D-link amplifier was supposed to solve this problem.I have not used this laptop on other wireless networks, to answer fully the original question.

Cordless phones operating at 2.4GHz can hose your link. Are you picking up any networks besides your own?

Indeed! My wife gets an earful if she is yapping on the cordless when I am playing a big (for me) pot.And I usually can see 3 to 4 other wireless networks at any given time.edit - holy crap! just checked and picking up 7 other networks right now (all encripted dammit!).

Go to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager>Network Adapter. Then click the plus sign on Network Adapter, and double click open your network adapter. Then Under the driver tab you can choose to "update driver". It can search the interwebs for you. It's not a bad idea to update ALL your network adapter drivers. If that doesn't help you may have to find the device manufacturer website and download drivers from there and install them.

So, I'd recommend getting a phone that works on a different frequency (5.8 GHz ?).You might try fooling around with the channel settings in your wireless router or access point. If I recall correctly, other devices operating in 802.1b mode cause your gear to also operate in b mode for backward compatibility.

you have the same prolem as me. its not your equipment, its that youre trying to make your signal travel 50 ft across then 10 feet up. wireless signals travel well in a straight line thru walls, but not up. youre prety much sol unless you move your router or move where you sit

Like others have said, I've had similar problems with distance and elevation from the router.I think there are ways to improve the DLink you bought, you should search lifehacker or something.-Jeepstopper24

Get rid of that thing, thats probably half your problem. A lot of times the amplifiers totally hose up the relay and you lose signal.Mark

Thanks for all the good input folks, I shall give it all a try. In the meantime, I am on a sick heater (using my hardwired machine cuz the other timed out with me having qq!) playing 0.25/.50 limit, running the 12 bucks, (which I had donked down from 34 playing NL tournies earlier today) back up to 37 bucks in the space of 1 hour. Limit is the only thing that keeps me marginally liquid on stars anymore!

I have the solution to your problem:Its called Ethernet over power.Basically you run an Ethernet cable from your router to the closest powerpoint using the product in the below link, then you plug the second adapter into any powerpoint in the same house and run a cable from it to your laptop. No more dropouts :club:http://www.netgear.com/Products/PowerlineN...ers/XE102G.aspxThis one is only 14mbps, Here in Australia i have a pair that run at 100mbps, although if you are only using it for internet and not transferring lots of data then 14mpbs is more than you will need.Cheers, Naps

Buy a better router. Wireless N is pretty solid. A bit expensive but they have better range, faster speeds, etc. Dish out some extra cash buy a 6.0ghz phone that's the new federally mandated frequency for landline phones, so there's no more interference.

I have the same problem, and I'm only about 10-15 feet (through one wall, horizontally) from my router. Just randomly disconnects every once in a while, and sometimes won't even pick up the network for a few minutes even though it picks up all of our neighbours' networks. I'm using this D-link router.

I use a linksys wireless-N router that is up one level and over 35 feet from my laptop and 360. Both run at the same time with ease and zero dropouts so far. Seriously, never a problem. I don't have any extra booster or anything like that.

RIP Laptop.Just as all this good info was coming in I decided to sit down at a micro cash game. Dealt QQ early on, pop it up, 6 callers, flop comes 3 7 9 rainbow. Donk bets out, I am just about to pop it up, and I lose my connection! Cursing laptop and banging it trying to get signal as I run down to computer room. Log on using desktop computer only to find I had timed out of the hand. And some donk goes runner runner with Ace - 7 off to take down the pot. My poor little laptop died trying to save me from a sick beat! Oh the shame.Tried to turn it on later, got a check the disk message, waited, and never got past 0 percent. Today tried and it won't even boot. Sniff - such a donk.At any rate, hopefully my next machine will not suffer the same fate thanks to all the good input I have received. Oh but for some patience...........
