Can you explain to me how giving someone infinite odds preflop to catch garbage is better than giving them proper odds postflop? I would love to see the math there. If everyones calling preflop they're getting the correct odds to call anyway and then correctly calling even a check-raise on the flop fo you have no way to make them make a mistake. By just calling pre-flop you can actually allow them to make a mistake(a mathematical one, since you love the math so much). And as you know , you make money when players make mistakes.
So it is mathematically sound to let 73 in the BB catch an A73 flop and bend my TPTK over his knee?Cool.I thought the objective of the game was to win money by maximizing my advantages.
didnt you steal this advice from smash?
I gladly stole the scenario from smash, since it was already in this thread. The objective part is Poker for Dummies type stuff. If some of you think setting witty traps with AK is solid poker, I can't change your minds. I prefer to play poker that is designed to make me the most amount of money possible, and I sure hate giving away free cards to a BB or anyone else with a premium starting hand.
do you ever limp utg with aces?if you said yes your taking the chance of the big blind coming inI agree you should raise out the big blind if there are 2-3 limpersif there are 5-7 limpers you should raise this maybe 10% of the timeI'm just not a fan of putting myself in a spot where I raised preflop and get 5 callers and feel like I have to lead into them when the flop is J 9 3
After that flop, I no longer have the best hand. Since I'm out of position, I check and wait to see what comes back around to me. I'm not afraid to let go of a good preflop hand that whiffs completely.

Firstly, raising in position is hardly solid information of A/K to your opponents. There are a plethora of other hands you could be 'representation'.
True. Then again, what I pointed out was that your opponent won't put you on AK when you limp not that they would be putting you on AK if you did. There is a HUGE difference. Say the flop comes K23. When your opponent is trying to put you on a hand and thinks back to preflop betting then if you limped he will never even consider you on AK. If you raised he might consider that you have AK. Now you can use that single fact to your advantage. You KNOW that if your opponent is fairly good, he will probably not consider you on AK.
Secondly, it's rare that someone at low limits will actually _think_ about your raise with several people in the hand.
If you don't think that your opponents think about your play you should attend some sort of poker for beginners class before you give away more of your money. And sure some low limit games can be thoughtless. If you're playing at a table with airheads then none of my advice applies, obviously.
Third, we're talking about LIMIT POKER. The vast majority of the game is played based on the cards and math, not on these mind games.
I think you are the only one talking about LIMIT POKER. I've never played a hand of limit poker in my life. Maybe some day...

You have to remember that there is NEVER a single way to play a hand all the time....I have even folded pocket aces pre-flop before. So it would really depend on the game you are in, the players in the game. If it is a table that is REALLY out there why raise? You are probably going to get paid off if you hit anyways. I would be more inclined to raise at a tight table rather than a loose one. But only "you" know the situation. Tread lightly sometimes with AK more often than not...I have probably seen this hand lose more money than any other hand...With A Q being a very close second. I believe that AK has gained MUCH more popularity since the advent of poker on t.v. Yeah heads up for all my chips, it isn't a bad hand to get all of your chips in with. Limit hold'em with four or five other players probably drawing against me....Depends on what the flop brings. Good chance that someone is in there with a pp as well.....

SexyPokerGirl, can you please send picture as proof?Thank you kindly
The only one I would consider sending a pic would be Daniel Negranue. If he wants one that is. I hear he's single now :D:club::D
Only do this when you feel others are on to your game, and you want to throw them off. otherwise, you should be playing solid poker.
I dissagree with that way of thinking. By the time you actually realize that others are on to your game you may allready be out of the tournament or lost a considerable amount in a ring game. My advice is to ALWAYS mix up your game. Of course moves like limping in the SB w AK should be done very OCCASIONALLY.---EDIT---LOL, just realised after reading some of the topics here that most of you probably play online. My advice applies to LIVE POKER ONLY fellas. I also realised that it's been almost a year since I played online
I play both online and live. Chicago is such a backwater that you have to go to Indiana, Wisconsin, or travel somewhere like Mississippi or Vegas. So, I play online sometimes to stay sharp.Your point is well taken about mixing up your game - I seem to do this MUCH more often in live games, as you can actually see your opponents, and have a better idea of where they're at mentally. Online, I mix up my game less and focus on solid poker, because the opponents change so much more quickly.
