What To Do In A Strange Hand....

Recommended Posts

I have been lurking around for a couple of weeks after deciding to check out FCP only recently and have found that there are quite a few users here whose opinions I believe that I can respect. And I really think there is a lot that I can learn here. That being said, please forgive any missteps I might make in my first post. :club: OK, this hand has been eating away at me since last weekend.I am playing in a small local tournament, NL HE, $100 buy-in, just over 60 players entered, payout is only top 3.Blinds had been raised to 200-400 only about 10 minutes prior and we have 20 minutes until the next level, 18 players left; 9 at each table.Average stack at the table is about 10K.I have been playing tight-aggressive all night, in fact, the last hand that I actually showed down was pocket aces vs. pocket deuces with Mr. Deuces all-in and then all-out. =)UTG moves all-in for close to 13K.I know this player to be fairly solid as I have played with him in other tournaments. I actually have a pretty solid read on him too and have called out his hand several times that night already.UTG+1 then moves all-in for 6K.I don’t know as much about her as I have only seen her play for about an hour, but she recently lost half of her chips to what would likely become one of her *bad beat stories*.Based on what I know about Player 1, I figure him for AK or AQ because I know he is not pushing with TT or better pockets. He would want action on those. Then again, he could certainly be doing exactly the opposite of what I expect because he knows that I have been reading him well. But, not in that position, I don’t believe he would be focusing on me because the entire table is still to act, so I believe he is making a really weird blind steal attempt.Player 2, I could see calling with TT – AA, but based on what she has showed down and based on my overall read I just have this strange feeling she is also on a similar hand, or maybe even KQ, KJ. Possibly the same hand, AK, but I don't know, I just felt like she had a weaker hand than he had.For whatever reason, I just have this gut feeling that this is one of those AK vs. AQ things. OK, partly *gut* and partly just all of the little things, the way he spilled his chips, the way she said "all-in" rather than "call" as she had done before, like maybe she was making a strong statement rather than a passive one... I don't know how to explain it, but I would have made a side bet easily that they were holding hands right in the narrow range of those two hands.I am not trying to make it sound like I can alway read that well, I just want to convey exactly what I was thinking in the moment.I am next to act and look down and find JJ in the hole. I have 12K in chips.I run through the rest of the possibilities that I can think of, and I…….

The blinds are 200/400. UTG and UTG+1 have just moved allin for $12k and $6k respectively? Am I reading this right? If you have a strong read that UTG has AK/AQ and UTG+1 has a wide range then call. Without reads this is an instamuck.

I would be calling since only top 3 pay..Your going to need to get chips, although you have a comfortable stack right now, I'd be willing to gamble..Also I wouldn't discount totally smaller pocketpairs from the original raiser, as I see people overbet massively with these, although I'm not sure why he would do that at this point since he has a comfortable M..If this paid like 10 or 15 people, I think its closer to folding

My local B&M usually has fields of 40-60, and always pays 6. Paying 3 is bonkers. Don't play in these tournaments anymore. Show your disgust to the floor staff by drinking a bunch of summer hummers and going in there and breaking ****. And yes, call, but only because 3 are getting paid.

you think there are a lot of hands beating JJ that push for 30x BB ?

I honestly have no idea. It's hard to think of a reasonable range for them. All I know is, a player has moved allin UTG for 30xbb and another player has called.Taking the mild insanity of the situation aside, without reads can we really expect UTG to have moved in with AT/99? Can we take QQ+ out of their range? How about UTG+1? QQ+ are in the range, as is AK. I don't know about AQ. Maybe suited.Having the following ranges for UTG and UTG+1:UTG = AQs+,AQo+UTG+1 = JJ+,AQs+,AKoPuts us at 35%. Not massively +EV. If we add QQ and TT to UTG then we are 32%.Factor in a slight chance that someone behind picks up AA/KK and I need serious convincing to put it all in here. I need a strong read of AK/AQ from both of them.Maybe I'm just being weak tight again. /shrug

Ya, I am with you 100% on that. I had a real strong read on UTG and if it was just him, I would feel better about calling, though it is likely a race. It was UTG+1 that really made me think. My gut instinct was that UTG+1 did not have a big pocket pair. The hands I was most worried about were AT/KQ or any combination... 3 over cards all possibly live. Worse would be AKs/QJs where I would be 31%.If UTG+1 did, indeed, have a big pocket pair, then I would be willing to take my lumps and not kick myself for a bad read. In fact, I would have chips left and a slightly better read on her and I am not afraid of playing the short stack. :club: Generally, I am much happier pushing all-in with JJ than calling all-in with it.Then again, I have been in a rut of 5th - 10th place finishes lately due to losing coin flips late in tourneys.
