Help With Emotions

Recommended Posts

I'm so tilted right now. Over the weekend I went to the Borgata in Atlantic City. It was my first time in a real casino and my first time in a real poker room. Not to mention there were also a ton of sit-and-gos running along with the WPT Borgata Open tournaments. I was very excited. I usually clean up locally and I don't do too shabbily online. So I was very eager to see how I did in the real poker rooms.Long story short, I lost my entire bankroll in poker. And I can't even shrug all of it on bad beat sob stories. I donked up quite a few places.I'm really not ready to give up, though. I'm slowly replaying the events of this weekend in my head. I'm realizing everything I did wrong, and I'm working on correcting my mistakes, but I'm still losing sleep over it. I'm second-guessing myself at every turn in the FCP rooms, and... well... it's not fun anymore. I'm swearing and cursing a lot more and I'm easily tilting.I guess my question is... how do you guys keep your emotions in check while playing? I'm having a really hard time with it right now.

Hmm... I never thought of it like that. Thanks for you very enlightening words, fish. I'll take them to heart. Maybe when you're done pleasuring yourself to George Michael videos, you could give me a bit more insight.

if you lost your entire bankroll in one trip then you are playing way over your head.practice bankroll management and you won't have to worry about tilting so much
I did that. I didn't go in with all my cash, yanno? It was just money I've devoted to gambling and poker, really. It's not like I'm broke. It was just poker money.

EDIT:Your bankroll is the money you use to play poker with, thus you blew your bankroll. Gotta love a player who considers his entire bankroll "just poker money."

I figured I might post more than this thread. Seemed like a decent forum trolling it.
Ok, we all know you have poor bank roll management skills, and that you pretty much seem like a donk, so with that being said, and known, let's get on to analyzing WTF you did wrong...1)What was the amount of your "poker" bankroll you took with you.2.)What games/limits were you playing?I can help from here...

Well, a majority of the money went to almost repeated bubbles on the sit-and-gos. Hell, I even made a point to play supertight in a few of 'em. I'd end up with Aces and, well, we all know how easily those get busted. And yeah. I'm sure everyone's donked it up before.

Its just money i may have spent in the pub or otherwise.

1. 1300. I know it's not a lot, but it was my prize from a tournament I played 2 weeks earlier. I was hoping to turn it into more.2. Most of my games, as I said, were sit-and-gos. I played mostly the 100+20 ones, but some of them were 250+20. I ended up having a nice $400 session in a 1-2NL ring game, but that went right back into the sit-and-gos.All HE btw.

OK, that was all I needed to hear. See, first off, saying $1300 isn't alot is irrelevant. To some people, they can make that in a few days, for others, that is HUGE, so don't down talk yourself and your roll. Now, as for the games you were playing....*shakes head* $1300 isn't alot, when you are plaing $120 and $250 sng's. There is your problem, you are playing way above your head. For the average SNG player, you would need atleast 40-60 buy ins to be fully rolled, and of course if you were a better player maybe less. (not saying you aren't) But anyway, playing the sng's you were playing you would need bare minimum $4800, playing ONLY $120 sng's with 40 buy ins. That was your major problem, you just played in stakes that you shouldn't have. If you take one bad run of cards, like you did, then you go broke and have to start all over. It isn't worth it. So just try to stay within your BR next time. And playing 1-2NL, that would be like 200NL. You should have atleast 40-60 buy ins for that game as well. So you do the math! You are way off as to which games you should playOf course like you said, first time in a Casino, got excited, jumped into the big action. Just don't do it nex time. You've experienced the bad side of Variance, and hopefully now you can realize that it was a mistake and change accordingly.

keep a journal, seriously. it won't stop u permanently from tilting but, write down how you feel when u take a bad beat and your thoughts on what you did when you tilted/donked off ur money. It helps. Sometimes I write a little reminder to myself on why I play this wretched gambling game rather than focus more on something else. Put down your goals, write down thoughts that'll keep you level headed. Also, wander around broke for awhile, I'd say w/less than $5 to your name. That's always fun.

Not a bad idea at all. I don't keep a journal for my feelings/thoughts, but I do keep one for my winnings/loses and for my goals for each month. Good idea.

The journal is a damn good idea, really. I still remember most of the weekend, so I might start jotting it down. In response to the Corp, unfortunately the 100+20 was the lowest SnG.
be very detailed about each event, be very truthful and blunt about it. The more details, the easier it is to remember and relive the experience, and hopefully that'll remind you to NOT DONK AWAY MONEY!
