Poker Is Experience

Recommended Posts

I'm so sick of all these people looking up to pro poker players. Honestly, can't you people realize, poker is all about experience. Its not about some weird skill that some have and most do not. It is about perceptions. If some people had some crazy ability to read when someone was strong or bluffing they would win more than 50% of the tournaments they play. The reason people like Phil Ivey, T.J. Cloutier, or Daniel Negreanu win tournaments is because of the amount of hands they play, not because of some skill you do not possess. They see more hands than you, react to more sitiuations than you, and are put in tougher high stress situations than you. They do not have some skill you cannot learn. As much as people say Daniel Negreanu has some way of telling when you are strong or weak, they are wrong. He just has seen a lot of hands and knows what is looks like when someone is betting for value or making some value bluff thats looks like a value bet. He is not born with something that you are not, he has simply experienced more than you.P.S.-I don't mean they have seen more hands than you in that particlar tournament. I just mean they have played a ton of hands over their life and have learned what different plays look like. They were not born with a talent.

This attitude is why the big names will always be able to make money off poker. It's also why I will always be able to make money, but on a very much smaller level than said big names.

I know of people who have played 100k+ hands and are still miserable players. Some of the worst players at the site i play at are the ones playing the most. You can play for years and not really 'get it'. Experience is necessary but not sufficient. You may not have to be a genius in the conventional sense, but i dont think you'll find many 'tards beating tough games over the long haul.
