To figure it out with mathematical certainty, you need to know the answer to two questions:What is my variance/standard deviation for this game? What is an acceptable risk of ruin for me? I.e... am I comfortable with 95% confidence that I won't go broke due to luck, or would I rather have 99% confidence? The first can only be determined experimentally. You need a metric ass-ton of hands to actually know what your variance and standard deviation is.The second is a not-too-long-but-still-messed-up statistics problem, but the formula is out there somewhere. Search other bankroll threads. For what it's worth, I think limit hold'em needs to be 400 BB... Especially if you're out of micro stakes and squarely in low stakes online (2/4 and 3/6). Also, you're correct that LO8 has much lower variance than LHE. But I think 100 BB is still too low. And, like No Neck says, when in doubt, stick with 300 BB.

Offhand, I'd say stud's just a little bit higher variance than LHE. You can get more bets in for one pot, and it's easier to suck out when every one has their own cards. It's not a huge difference though. I'd say that if you're using 300 BB for LHE, then use 400 for stud.

just just started NL hold em atthe casino I play at(soaring eagle in Mt. pleasent, MI) it is 100 max buy in. If i have 2.5k, how much shud i actually bring with me to the casino? about 1k?
3 or 4 buyins at most, if you find a way to lose that, it's not your night.

only problem is i live 2 hours from the casino, and am only 18, so the other ones around me(there are many, i live 30 minutes from downtown Detroit, 40 minutes from Windsor-must be 19 years old)you must be 21 to play. So last time I went, which was the first time they had NL Hold Em, I bought in for 100, after first ahdn I played I was down to 30, rebought to 130, got upto about 250 before losing it all with jacks full of aces against quad jacks. Then re bought again and ended up cashing out with 670$ in front of me...My point is if that I drive 2 hours and end up losing 300 or 400 in 2 hours of playing and had no more $ on me, I would be PISSED...

It sounds like you got cold-decked early and still managed to do all right with three buy-ins, so I'd say three or four would still probably be all right for you in the future. A lot depends on the stakes though. If you're buying in for a full 100 big blinds, then two buy-ins will almost always cover you unless you go on tilt or something and three should be about the maximum. However, if you're only allowed to buy-in for 50 big blinds, then it's a different story. In that case, I'd say go ahead and bring 5 buy-ins. If you lose those though, you really should just turn around and go home. It's way too easy to tilt and start throwing all your money away, and if you lose that much in a session, it's usually your play as much as it is variance.

Yessir, 50 big blinds. blinds are 1-2, and 100 max buy. Standard preflop raises depends on who is at the table and range from $10-$25 preflop. Last time I was there, a player who called any hand preflop would call almost any raise preflop so people were raising 25$ if he had already limped. His stack had the most variance I have ever seen. He ended up losing three buy ins, and at one time h had probably near 1k in chips....
