Shuffle Up & Deal! Action is under way at the 2010 WPT Southern Poker Championship. Approximately 180 players start the day with 30,000 in chips. Blinds will start at 50-100 with 90 minutes levels.http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-jour...&ucat=&Daniel blogged about the structure and that's it's faster than most WPT events in order to get it done in 4 days.

This will be one of the more grueling events I've played in quite some time. In fact, I believe it is the only 4-day event on the WPT schedule. Most events these days go with a 5-day event, playing from 12pm-9pm on the first three days with no dinner break. Bellagio was the innovator of that schedule, and most places copied it since the players all seem to absolutely love it.Finishing a 10k buy in event in 4 days is quite a task. Obviously it's going to mean really long days, and day 2 specifically could be a nightmare depending on the number of entries. You see, day 4 is set aside for the final table, and day 3 is all about playing down from 27 to 6. That means on day 2, we'll have to play down to 27 players! I'm not sure how many they are expecting, as it's very difficult to gauge with just so many events happening right now. The L.A.P.C. is off and running, as is the Aussie Millions. When I first heard it was a 4-day event, the first thing I did was look at a copy of the structure. I assumed that they'd need to speed up the pace of the event, otherwise they'd never get done in 4 days. I was right, the structure is fast paced. So the event will be grueling in terms of the number of hours you'll have to play leading up to the final table, but there will also be a very different dynamic to the late stages of the event. It is simply impossible for it to be deep stacked poker with say, 27 players left. I predict that from 45 players until the final table, the play will resemble an online tournament in the late stages, where the average stack has no choice but to either re-raise all in before the flop, or fold. It's going to be tough to call raises in position, because the blinds will be so high. The key missing levels include:500-10001200-24002500-50005000-10,00025,000-50,00050,000-100,000Outside of these levels, the structure is pretty standard with the appropriate ante ratios at all limits. I like all of that. However, taking out 6 levels will have a drastic impact on the structure. That's a full 9 hours of play, or in other words, more than a FULL day of play as compared to most events. A day and a bit has been taken out of the event to accommodate it being a 4-day event. I assume the casino just didn't think it was feasible to run a 5 day event, and that's their prerogative. I appreciate the fact that I could find the structure online so that I could at least make an informed decision as to whether I'm going to make the trip. Also, at least now I know exactly what I'm in for, so there is no sense complaining when I got there. I got my food, I'm prepared for a marathon, and I'm prepared to play pre-flop poker in the late stages. I don't "like it," but I'm capable of adapting and that's what I plan on doing.

Daniel just told Singer that none of the good players wear sunglasses. Singer is the only player at the table wearing them. An obligatory Hellmuth joke soon followed.

Daniel blogged about Day 1.http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-jour...&ucat=&

A long day of play and a good result in the end. I finished with 81,200 and half the field is gone. 208 players started, and there is around 104 left. I didn't hold a ton of hands, but played the ones I did get very well. I know I've put in a good effort when my hair hurts at the end of the night. My whole body is exhausted. Tomorrow we start up again at 2:00pm and we'll play down to 27 players. It actually shouldn't take longer than 12 hours since we aren't going to play 500-1000 or 1200-24000. That will help eliminate a decent amount of players, hopefully not me obviously.MORE CONTINUTED AT LINK

Keith Lehr Keeps an Eye Out For TroubleLevel 7: 400-800, 100 anteKeith Lehr has been very talkative at his table early, telling everyone that his wife has swine flu, so he might be willing to gamble so if he busts he can go home and take care of her. Lehr also says he promised his son he would take him to the Super Bowl if the New Orleans Saints won the NFC Championship. (They won it yesterday.) His son just texted him to ask when his Dad was going to buy the tickets.A few minutes later, Keith Lehr raises from middle position to 7,300, and the guy on his left moves all in from late position. Lehr calls with KK, dominating his opponent's KJ. The board comes 76339, and Lehr wins the pot with his pocket kings. As Lehr starts scooping in the pot, his opponent stands up and extends his arm to shake Lehr's hand. But Lehr completely ignores him. His opponent gets a little indignant, asking why Lehr won't shake his hand. Lehr looks up at him and says, "I'm sorry, I didn't notice. I'm blind in my left eye."His opponent doesn't seem to believe him, saying something like, "You knew what you were doing." To prove his blindness, Lehr removes his fake left eye. That pretty much ends the debate right there.CLASSIC!!!!

Justin Smith Doubles Through Daniel NegreanuLevel 9: 800-1,600, 200 anteAfter a flop of 10-7-5 with two clubs, Justin "BoostedJ" Smith is all in with A-J against Daniel Negreanu's 9-9. But the turn card is the J of clubs, giving Justin a higher pair. However, Negreanu picks up a club flush draw and a gutshot straight draw, needing a nine, an eight, or any club to win the pot. The river card is a blank, and Justin Smith wins the pot with a pair of jacks to double up to about 112,000. Negreanu is knocked all the way down to 27,000 (17 big blinds).Justin "BoostedJ" Smith - 112,000Daniel Negreanu - 27,000

Daniel Negreanu EliminatedLevel 9: 800-1,600, 200 anteA player in early position raises to 4,000 and Justin Smith calls from the cut off seat. Daniel Negreanu moves all in for 25,300 more from the big blind. The original raiser smooth calls and Smith moves all in for an additional 67,900 more. The original raiser says "I need a second", and then proceeds to take out his phone to do some undermined calculation. The floor quickly puts a stop to him using his electronic device, and he calls shortly there after.Negreanu: A :club: 10 :ts Original Raiser: A :3h K :qh Smith: Q :5c Q :4h The board comes 87432 allowing Smith's pocket queens to hold, eliminating Daniel Negreanu from the tournament.Justin "BoostedJ" Smith - 233,000Daniel Negreanu - eliminated

Don't know the hand history (i.e. who pushed first) but why are all the chips going in the middle with 2 overs vs a single pair? Smith 56000 pf, so >30 bb, DN 75,000 or so? so 45 bb's? Sure there was 200 ante, but I thought this stuff was not supposed to happen while still relatively "deep" like this in smallball. Is there a bunch of highlevel mindhumping going on here that led to this showdown? Just curious to understand. Maybe I need to wait and buy the next book too.

Look at the stack sizes in the hand, Daniel only had 25k at 800/1600, he was crippled by BoostedJ earlier.
