Heading to Costa Rica next week.
Cool, you'll have to let me know what you think. I've heard it's amazing.
We have a small Family place on the Pacific Coast. The US $ is still quite strong there and they are American Friendly - I'm personally working on changing that of course. CR is a lot like Mexico used to be 20 or 30 years ago, but with VERY good infrastructure. Roads are good. And when they build stuff they really do a nice job. Health Care is very good. Lots of ex-pats. Let me know if you have any specific Questions.
I was in Jaco, Costa Rica, also on the Pacific side, for two weeks in Feb. It was fantastic. I think you're going just before the wet season. We didn't see very many birds which was a disappointment, but overall it was an awesome trip. Definitely better than mexico imo.Where are you going? Any plans?

You apparently don't understand. That is basic outbreak containment strategy. When an outbreak reaches stage 3 where it firsts starts to jump to humans the immediate approach is to kill off all the animals to stop too many humans from getting infected. If this isn't done more and more humans get infected by the swine to human strand and sooner or later the strand mutates so that it can jump from human to human which is a stage 4 outbreak. Right now we are already in a stage 5 outbreak where the human to human spreading apprears in more than one country which comes just before stage 6 which is full pandemic.

Now you're just making crap up. Assuming this did come from pigs, which isn't confirmed yet, it came from a spontaneous mutation in a virus in pigs in Mexico. Once it jumps to humans, it spreads by human to human contact, and the pigs are no longer in the loop, and the pigs are possibly not even infected by this particular strain of it. Furthermore, it is spreading across countries because humans travel widely. Pigs tend to be a bit less adventurous, as they hate taking off their shoes in the security check line.Killing pigs in Egypt to stop a disease that has jumped to humans, possibly from Mexican pigs, and didn't originate in Egypt makes no sense.

Yeah, I kind of shook my head at that story, too....List of countries I might consider moving to:IrelandNew ZealandEgyptDubai, UAECosta RicaBermuda
You're welcome. Dubai is hotter than hell. When we landed it was dark at like 10pm and the ground temp was something like 130 with 98% humidity. I'm not joking. The second your plane lands they drive the AC trucks over and hook them up to the plane, because the plane can't even come close to keeping up and everyone would die if they didn't. We also had to take pictures of the city with the car windows up because the camera lenses would fog over immediately if you rolled down the window.

Well, I'm assuming they are killing off their pigs because they have confirmed cases of infected pigs or at least have good reason to beleive the pigs are infected. If they don't then I agree that it seems a little strange. As for the other stuff then you are skipping over an entire phase when you say that as soon as a human is infected the pigs are no longer involved. Once the infection jumps to humans it only spreads from pigs to humans initially. This is called the phase 3 outbreak. This type of transmission doesn't stop just because humans now have the virus, the infected pigs didn't suddenly get better. You need to stop the pig to human spreading and this is normally done by killing off the pigs. In this case the move into stage 4 which is human to human spreading seemed to have been very quick but that still doesn't mean that people can't get infected by contact with pigs anymore.

I guess it makes perfect sense for China and Russia to ban imports of Pork products too.

IT'S JUST THE ****ING FLU
Well that's no reason for the government to not provide a fix that kills 25 times more people that the flu like they did in 1976 when swine flu hit a texas army base.

Yeah, OK, that's correct. I have not heard of any confirmation of infected pigs in Egypt, or even any *confirmed* cases in Mexico. I think the experts are just assuming it jumped from pigs to humans in Mexico, but they have no proof. It could also just be a mutation in a human strain, or something some other animal has been carrying for hundreds of years that suddenly turned virulent. So it would be silly to kill pigs in Egypt for something that may or may not have happened in Mexico. But yeah, if they have a confirmed case of a species-jumping dangerous-to-humans flu in pigs in Egypt, then their plan makes sense. AFAIK, no part of that is true.

There's a farm in Alberta where the pigs caught this specific virus from a worker who came back from a vacation in Mexico.

Egypt has no cases of swine flu in pigs, or in humans. They did it as a purely preventative measure. The government wanted to be seen as taking action.

Just got back.Flew (flu?) into San Jose and immediately drove to our place up in the North West (Guanacaste near Liberia). 230 km trip took nearly 5 hours! Roads were in great shape, but a lot of truck traffic and TONS of "Speed Traps" made the trip pretty slow & stressful.Didn't do a lot. Just hung out in town. Weather reports seemed to indicate rain every day, but only saw a little rain for a few minutes on one day - otherwise hot & sunny without a lot of humidity. Then drove back to SJ for the weekend. Very under-rated town IMO. A little bit of a Buenos Aires vibe - certainly not anywhere near the level of BA, but it has a certain "Old Europe" feel. About 15 degrees cooler. Quite nice.Saw a few birds. One day late in the afternoon after it rained we were in the pool and saw about 25 hummingbirds darting all over the place. Pretty cool.Did not peel off to check out the Casinos so can't really give a Trip Report on that.
