question of the day!

Recommended Posts

OK, i am speaking for my point of view. Most Fathers (less mothers) want their kid to be a professional athlete. My question to you is, if you have a kid, or when you do have children...are you going to bring them up playing poker???

My five year old son can tell you that a flush beats a straight and trips beat two pair (unlike jfarrell). He's curious and i figure any learnin is good learnin. He's already better at ranking the hands than his mother.

I wouldn't mind teaching my children one day how to play cards, but by no means will they be playing for money until they've had a job and have shown responsibility. That I can assure you will be clear & to the point.

Its starting to freak me out that we all have 5yr olds. :club: Mine is starting to get it. She knows what hands to fold and what a pair ,straights and flushes are. She is a little readble tho cause everytime she gets aces she kisses them. Thou just recently bluffed for the first time by kissing cards that weren't aces. She is on her way! :-)

I taught my 10 year old how to play. He is getting pretty good although he is still too weak/passive and therefore loses his allowance to me each week:)He does beat his older cousins on a regular basis though. Best Regards,Cole

Poker can be used to help kids understand probablity, precentages, patience, risk vs. reward, and thinking everthing through before you act. Yes, it is important to teach them that POKER + gambling real money= trouble. I play low buy-in tournys and enjoy that challenge of reading others, figuring pot odds and controlling my emotions. All good life skills in my humble opinion. Can't wait until the day my little 7 yr old girl beats me by bluffing with 9-10 suited. LOL

I wonder if I should change it to:jfarrell, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I think playing any kind of cards is a great way to teach math skills. My daughter will be starting kintergarden in the fall and she already has a solid grasp of basic math functions. On the other hand, for Mother's day I got a new poker table........when she saw the box she said " Oh mommy, it's a card table" ..... then she hugged the box. I should probably make her watch a little more Sesame Street and a little less World Poker Tour.

I will not let my 7 yr old watch the WPT (I love it by the way) because of all the crap hands guys like Gus Hansen play. They never show them throwing away all the K-8 and waiting for a top tier hand, but they do show Gus going all in with 8-3 off suit. My wife was watching the WPT with me the other day and was wondering why someone through away a K-5. She sees so many pros play such crap starting cards and get away with it that now she thinks K-5 is a good hand to raise with. Needless to say I am not letting her near a poker table for a while.

Def best to wait till they are in there early teens i think. Though poker doesnt necessarily meaning gambling 95% of the time it does and no need to gamble at such a young age.
My family often plays for no $$$, just a free roll. Our own PPT I guess. LOL :club: More for bragging rights really. Which can be just as fun as playing for money at times. I love beating my brother-in-law, since he kills me at everything else.
