newbie topic; i apologize, but i really need help

Recommended Posts

Ok, this is my first post here. Observed for quite some time. My apologies in advance if this question has been answered here before. Everyone here seems to be nice enough though, so this would be as good a place as any to get ideas/input....I've been playing poker for years now. Home games, and more recently, online (well, for about a year and a half now; done fairly well for myself). My question, however, has to do with brick and mortar casinos. I've never been. I live in West Virginia; we're not near any place that has a poker room. I recently found out that my girlfriend is pregnant (can we say Lifestyles baby folks?); so we're going to throw a wedding together, etc. I wanted to have one big blowout before I lose all semblence of freedom; monetary and otherwise. I figured the best and most enjoyable way to do this would be to plan a weekend trip to Atlantic City (the closest place to me). Me and a few friends are going and none of us have ever seen the inside of a casino. Though we're avid poker players we haven't the foggiest idea as to how casino's work. So I was wondering if you folks could kinda give me the beginners guide to going to the casino. A few questions:1. Which casino should we hit when we go there? Our plan is to simply plop down in a poker room and waste a weekend away. No shows or anything like that.2. Ideally speaking, how much of a bankroll should I have? We're looking for relitavely low limit action here. The whole thing will be thrown together in a very short time. Would a bankroll around 3, maybe 4 hundred be enough?3. What type of games are typically spread there? Does it depend on the day? Ideally, I would love to be able to play Omaha Hi-Lo but I know its not the most popular game around. I've been pretty successful with that. 4. I really hate to ask this, but when I go, I don't want to seem like a complete newbie (I'd much rather do it here): What do you do when you get there? I know its probably not as simple as finding the poker room and plopping down at a table. Sorry for all the newbie style questions and thanks in advance for the help! Any additional suggestions/advice is welcomed.

not a problem bro, i can answer 3 of your questions.1.) i heard the borgota is very nice, i dont live in a.c. so im going on all secondary knowledge. feel free to correct me at anytime if someone has inside knowledge.2.) your bankroll for the weekend should be around 50-100X the big blind.3.) i dont know what games they spread at borgata but my guess is you could find any game you wanted to in a.c. (this is the one im not sure of, not being from a.c. and all.)4.) theres a "board" (kind of like a waiting list filled with every game they carry and all the tables they are running on." you get your name on that board and wait till they call you.i hope some of the things i said benefit you in some way. if anyone has any better knowledge feel free to add on. by the way, congrats on the new kid on the way!

i went and would have to say the nicest poker rooms with most tables and games were the borgata and the tajwould reccomend playing 2/4 as that is the lowest limit spread at both and at most placesunless ur into nl which would be 1/2 blinds, but of course its alot riskierdefinitly for newbies, its a must to go thru the 2/4 get acustomed to that level, and learn the casino poker in's and out's there,

1) The Borgata is the nicest and classiest casino in AC in my opinion. The cocktail waitresses there are smokin. It has the most confortable feel to all the other poker rooms and I believe it's still the only one with a computerized quening system. The Taj Mahal is the only other room worth visiting. It's a bigger room and has more of an old school feel to it. The chips are all crudded up and it's a little less comfy, they stiff you on drinks but it's still a nice place.2) If you are gonna play 2/4 four bills should cover it. Bring a little more if you are gonna play higher limits or if you think you might play some table games.3) Both casinos have the same type of games hold'em, omaha, 7stud. The difference is on the weekends the Borgata gets really crowded. The Taj can get pretty crowded too sometimes but it also has many more tables. I noticed when I sit in omaha most of the players are much older and they are usually very grumpy, especially at the Taj. When you sit in omaha they often have a "kill" button. This bumps up the limits for the next hand when the pot of the previous hand reaches a certain amount.4) It might be a good idea to get a comp card from the casino you are visiting. You will def need one if you decide to play in a tourney. Just find the front desk in the poker room. You'll give them your initials, your game, and your limit and if there are no seats available they'll put you on a waiting list and call you over the pa. They'll proabably tell you to get your chips at the window, and when you sit they'll ask you if you want to post the BB or wait for the BB. One thing to remember is to always tip your dealer when you win a pot. Just judge by the pot size and throw some chips their way. Tip your waitresses too. There is an awesome club above the poker room at the Borgata called the Mix. You should def check it out if you get time. Good luck hope this helped somewhat.

The Borgata is excellent... but the wait times there can get ridiculous, and it will remain that way until they get their new poker room built. The weekend after the new year, the wait for some games was over four hours. At one point, I literally saw 60 people on the wait list for 40-80...If you get a poker card and play at least 4 hours a day, they'll give you a room for $100 during the week and $120 on Fri and Sat. During the week, if you average 8 hours of play per day, they'll knock your room rate down to something like $35...

Everyone has given you great advice thus far. If this is your first time at a "real" casino, and you're getting married. Just go and have a good time. If you're with friends, it will be a lot easier anyway. I'm sure you'll love it. Good Luck.

Yeah, lots of good advice.  Don't be ashamed to ask something like this, I'm sure there are plenty of people afraid to ask similar questions.
Yeah, I'm generally not shy about questions....however, I see some of the other threads, some of the; how to put it delicately.....immature replies? I guess I could put it that way. I guess it comes with the territory. Thanks to everyone who did reply though, you were of great help. Seems like a great community overall! Thanks to everyone! And if anyone has any additional suggestions, please, feel free to post!

I second the congrats. Now I'll add just a little bit more info on the casinos (in my opinion of course). I agree that the Borgata is the nicest. Thats where I like to play the most. Like mentioned before, make sure that you tip the dealer when you win a hand. You dont need to tip much, I usually tip $2 a hand, unless I win a big pot. The wait can be long there at certain times, so I've ventured to the other poker rooms while there. So...if you are looking for some quick money, head over to the Sands poker room. Its on the fourth floor, hidden from everything else. Its not nice at all, but I take a lot of money off of other players there. In my opinion, its the easiest place to make money, not very man good players. I like to build up my money there before going to other places, but thats up to you. Good luck and have fun.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I play in Atlantic City alot and the Borgata is by far the nicest casino and has the nicest poker room. Howver, it is expensive to stay there on the weekends if you don't get the poker room discount....like 400$ a night, something to think about. Another room you might want to try is the poker room at the Tropicana. I began playing poker there a couple years ago and have seen it evolve...it really is a pretty nice room. I know they spread low-limit omaha high-low and the game is very loose. You might want to take a little more than 400$ for the weekend if that is the game you plan on playing. If you want to stick to the lower limits of hold'em then 400$ should cover you at 2-4. I think the Borgat only offers as low as 3-6. I don't like the room at Bally's, it is filled with smoke and the dealers aren't well trained at dealing any sort of poker. As for the Sands room I still harbor resentment for how disorganized they ran the tournaments during the Sands Million poker tournaments last year so I just won't play there.
