FCP Bob 1,320
WSJ Archives: 25 Years Ago in Beijing, A ‘Movement Unlikely to Die’ June 4 marks the 25th anniversary of the violent suppression of pro-democracy protests in China’s Tiananmen Square — an event that shocked TV audiences around the world, made global pariahs of the country’s top leaders and set a precedent for decades of iron-fisted reaction to political dissent. In the immediate aftermath of the crackdown, bodies piled up in Beijing morgues, with the Chinese Red Cross estimating the night’s fatalities at 2,600, according to one editorial writer’s account of events in The Wall Street Journal at the time. Meanwhile, observers struggled to make sense of such an abrupt ending to the protests, which had inspired similar activity across the country. Many viewed the idea that such a movement could be crushed with disbelief. “A rebellion that few believe will now die,” is how reporters for The Wall Street Journal described it in a front-page story analyzing the fallout of the crackdown, which began the night of June 3. AmScray 355
If that happened here the only vigil would be of a bunch of mustachioed Walter Mitty types 'open carrying' a long gun of some kind and a sign thanking the tank driver for his service.

AmScray 355
The weird part about Communism is that the people who ascend to run it are the ones smart enough to see how awful it is and only take their positions for personal gain Its always been that way. We're in this odd, psuedo-free market world with a lot more freedom of movement than there was in years past so it comes as no surprise to see this sort of thing coming from China but no doubt, if this same level of freedom of movement existed in the 60's, the Russian Elite would all have their families in Sweden, too.
