online sit n gos? play vs. real

Recommended Posts

i just watched/helped a friend of mine play a 10-handed sit n go tournament at holdempoker.com with play money. she is trying to learn the game.what i saw was kind of asinine. the 4-5 morons who were just there for kicks would go all-in on the first few hands (one with a 3-2o), then get sent packing, leaving 5-6 people who seemed like they wanted to play and improve their skills even though it was fake money. a few of them were actually pretty decent players.however, when it was 5-handed, one person immediately sat out, having their blinds folded. eventually this person by virtue of not playing at all made it into the top however many payout positions without playing a hand. again, this was fake money, so it’s not like it’s that big of a deal, but even people playing for fake money want to win and be rewarded, right?my question is if sites allow this in real money sit n go tournaments as well, or if there's predominantly a blind/ante structure that keeps people having to play or get wiped out early.

heh that used to happen to me when i tried the play money thing for a while. You're trying to play quality poker and some asswipe would go all in with nothing. It just ruins the game heh. Also, I recommend playing in play money tables for everyone. It's a nice way to just play and not be overly concerned about bad beats. I've been known to get depressed for a week if I get beat by a lousy player in even a $1/2 table, so playing in play money tables really lighten the mood lol

Tell her to go to Poker School Online. It is like $14.95 and the players who play there take it pretty seriously for the most part. It really helped my game. They have tourneys all the time and STT as well. Great way to learn all kinds of poker. Takes away quite a few of the problems with playing for play money.

Hah, it doesn't only happen in play money. In fact, if I just took a bad beat in a big game, and i KNOW i'm steaming, i'll sit $5+1 and push every hand to see how I do. If i triple up, I'll walk away. Usually I lose and that's fine. It's a great catharsis.Maybe higher rollers than myself can steam at higher levels than this.On the other hand, even at up to, I'd say occasioanlly, $30+3, you'll find some "move-in specialists" that ruin it for awhile. But they usually end up donating to somebody.

what about the sitting out question?

It's the person's right to sit out with his money, especially if he has a comfortable stack. It is pretty much the same thing as playing tight, except he doesn't get to exploit advantages when they do come to him. Unlike the all-in specialists, I don't see how the guy who sits out can affect play on your part.

When I triple, up I walk away and pretty much regularly am still solid with 4 players left. Sometimes I'll take 3rd without playing another hand....It's completely legal....super tight play on a huge stack? I don't recommend it for serious money; it's dumb...But who's to stop you?

i believe it. so it does happen in RM games. i guess the way it works is when the blinds finally start to rack up, you automatically fold any raise on the BB and the SB goes away period.wowee! that's poker!

she should invest in playin on a poker site, and play the lowest limits in sng's.Freemoney play is just to insane for a newbie.gif to begin learning how to play. Reasons have already been listed above. That or play the play money tourneys that have a very high buy-in for playmoney. I know a couple of sites that does this.

thanks all for the tips and i mean that seriously. she's already at a point where she's pretty savvy on the fake money games, except for the kamakazes and sitter-outters in these tournaments. her goal is to get good enough to finish in the money at a 15-20 person live action tournament she goes to weekly--thus far my advice to her has been that she is way too tight and ends up in trouble at the final table when the blinds go up because she has not taken chances and/or the opportunities that come her way--she usually has 2-3x her original buyin from being super tight/aggressive (no, no pun intended) whereas others obviously get to the final table with as much as 10-12x.
