Marketing/business Opportunity Question

Recommended Posts

I just got back from a business pitch and I was wondering what you smart kids on FCP thought about it. The pitch was for a site much like allvegaspoker.com but one that was actually kept up to date and not completely wrong. That site hasn't been updated for a long time and often their tournament information is very wrong. What would you guys think about a site that offered up to the minute information on all Vegas Poker Rooms including rake information, tournament schedules, promotions, high hand information, as well as what tables were running for every room in the Las Vegas Valley. The pitch seemed to me like they were lowballing the price for it and I wasn't sure if people who didn't live in the area would go for something like this. Feedback? Would you pay a couple bucks a month for up to the minute game information for all the Vegas casinos if you were a local or coming into town to play?

Pretty sure you'd have to make your money from advertising. I wouldn't pay a fee. If I was that concerned about it, I'd just call the room.
Yea, advertising is going to be a bit portion of it. I figure it'd be easier to pull money from the rooms themselves for advertising then it would be from the customers.

And obviously set up affiliate accounts with all the poker sites. Maybe even look at what it takes to be a rakeback provider. Of course, then you'd be competing with some other guy who posts here occasionally.

AVP isn't really all that out of date. If you just tell them something is wrong they'll fix it.But no, I wouldn't pay for it.
Do you get a text message or something every time the word rakeback appears in a thread?

Lol...he just sees me post and thinks it's a thread worthy of reading. But yeah, the guy who gave the pitch literally has no clue about business so from my standpoint it might be profitable to exploit the pitch he gave us to make money in the short/long term for what seems like very little work. The way he explained it he wanted to lean heavily on people paying but I definitely think you need to attack the higher ups at casinos from a marketing/advertising standpoint which is something AVP does not currently have. If they give us information we exclusively host on the site it might be something worth buying. Like with a membership you get special comps or something similar.

If you are in front of a computer already the information is out there if you dig so I dont think I would pay for that service. I think the whole poker industry is on downswing right now with pokerrooms closing and tourney attendance declining. Only growth left is in China.

Nobody wants to pay for information on the web. The whole point of the web is that you can access information about stuff without paying. Subscription models almost never work from what I understand except maybe for porn. If you do this, I would say it has to be advertising-based.

Yes, this is horrible, this idea.
But from my understanding if this site was run well there would be pretty good traffic for it correct? I forgot to add it has pretty much a program within the site that lets you track your live sessions which is different from AVP and it has some other cool features I had never seen utilized on a live poker site before. I do agree the subscription model would probably never have legs, but the site does seem to work in itself as long as the ad revenue is there.

Most of the people that are wondering about games will be people flying in for vacation.. they are never going to sign up for a subscription when they can just get the info for free from a forum or the cardroom itself.

I agree in that the most people who would use this would be people on vacation. Maybe the basics should be free and you could order a report with more detail for like $5. Not sure what the basics would be or what the more detail would be, but I would rather pay $5 for something I could just print out and take with me rather than spend 30 minutes searching.

Bottom line is there just isn't enough information out there that people don't have and would need to pay for.AVP pretty much has things covered. It's like saying you can either pay for Cardrunners or get DeucesCracked for free.

OK serious response:You are not going to have regulars using this site, it will be specifically from people traveling in. The locals and regulars will already know most of this info, if not they may check it once in a while. This is a pretty heavy traffic site (FCP that is) There is something like 20,000 plus members (after you take away suitedaces21's joke account, maybe 12,000 actual members) How many people here actually post regularly? Maybe a couple hundred?I am not saying have a site like this would necessarily be a bad idea, I just don't think you are really going to make much $$$ off of it. And if it costs more than a couple hundred bucks to set up, or buy into it or something like that, don't even bother. Look DN loses money on this site, and all they have to do is really pay hosting fees (not sure if Bob or Gov get paid, but I am guessing no).I think as poker players sometimes we think everyone follows it and is as into it as we are, that is not the case by a long shot.

I think if you kept up the info, did some SEO to get it on google for terms like Las Vegas poker toureys, and got rooms to pay for advertising it could work...but you will not be retiring anytime soon. Also you might want to contact the city of Las Vegas Tourism site and see about link sharing or something.

Nobody would ever pay for this.Assuming you have up to date information on the site about all of the poker rooms/tournaments in Las Vegas, the only real way you can monetize it is through:- Advertising... you'd have to do some heavy duty SEO to get on top, but there are plenty of people searching for where to play poker in Vegas before they come.- Newsletter marketing - have people sign up for a monthly newsletter about poker in vegas; new tournaments, etc. Offer a daily tournament schedule straight to e-mail at no charge to the end user. Have casinos pay for premium placement in your newsletter (ie Planet Hollywood paying you $500/month to be the #1 listed tournament in your newsletter). You can only command good prices if you have a large database of users, though- text message marketing - same thing, just with phones. Could be convenient for anyone coming to Vegas and wanting info about poker, but make sure they can opt in and out of the messages easily. You can also have casinos paying big money to reach these players.- Affiliate marketing - refer players to online poker rooms. Refer players to sites where they can book travel to Vegas, or offer links to shows, tours, other vegas info. i.e. Sell premium space to Zumanity for prominent placement. On the whole, it's a fine idea in theory and I'd definitely visit the site for information every now and again. I think it'll be really hard to command big bucks for advertising, though, without having your site up successfully for like 2 years at least
