Moving to Vegas in Jan '09. I am an accomplished 20-40 limit player from Toronto.Have been playing poker for 6 yrs. And have been playing at the casinos for only 2.5 yrs. I have played the limit cash games at bellagio on my trip there and killed it. I did decent at Atlantic City as well.I'm considering quitting my job and moving to Vegas to play professionally (job will still be there when I come back if I want it- so it's not a ridiculous risk if I go and have to come back after 4 -5 months)....QUESTION - can you just pack up and move to vegas?? As a canadian citizen I know it is difficult to get a work permit and even harder to get permanent residency based on just anything... how did DN just pack up and move to Vegas?? Are there special laws that can allow you to live in vegas and play poker for living without citizenship or permanent residency??Any help is appreciated!!

joke account?
no, not at all. I'm dead serious.I have a decent bankroll for that limit of $25K.Seriously, does anybody know anything about citizenship/work permit requirements to move to Vegas??Because I know I can only come to the States for 6 months a year...and I fully intend on basing my life out of LV!!Too cold up here in Toronto haha.....DN, im sure you can vouch for that ehh?

Not sure how it works with Canada/US but I think the general idea is that you come over on a tourist visa for 6 months, return to Canada for like 2 weeks and then repeat. After you've been here a while you can look into getting a green card.I'm pretty sure that they'll let you play poker "professionally" on a tourist visa since it's not like you're taking a job away from a US citizen or anything.

Thanks for the advice....basically that's what I had initially thought...good to know somebody had a similar train of thought on this issue!-----------------------Has anybody up n relocated to Vegas (from anywhere) ...... what kind of bankroll did you bring to start this chapter in your life?

standard wisdom is to have 400-500 bb for your chosen poker level (so 20K is more than enough for 20-40) plus 6 months living expenses.25K is probably just enough although I would want 30-35K.I am pretty conservative though. Many might think 25K is plenty.good luck to you.

Well, first step is to learn NL, cause it's a goldmine in the live vegas games. But with 25k, I think you'll be ok.

I grew up playin 1/2 nL....and moved to some of the higher limits when I was legal age to enter casinos.....Currently, when I play no limit...it is 3-6 stakes and Isit for $600. Usually do very well. But I find no limit is too risky for the mission I am trying to run out there.I'm going to stick to carefully planned regiment of 20-40 limit and one weekly tourney.

The 20/40 limit games at a place like Blue Heron are softer than the games in Vegas usually. If you really want a lot of soft mid limit holdem games LA is the best place. As a Canadian citizen you don't need a Visa to enter or stay in the US for up to 6 months. If you are going to spend more than that you can run into issues. When you cross the border and they ask you the purpose of your trip just say you are going down to play some poker and gamble but don't say you are a professional poker player as if you do then they may deny you entry and require that you obtain a Visa.Daniel was the first poker player to get the same type of Visa that athletes and high end entertainers have and unless you are a high profile player you won't qualify. In this article on Daniel's Agent it explains a bit how Brian Balsbaugh helped to get Daniel that Visa.http://www.pokerroyalty.com/_pdf/gamblin-m...n-balsbaugh.pdfDaniel grew up playing in the roving charity casino games in Toronto which were 10/20 games. A lot of very good players started in those games including players like Tuan Lam who finished second at last year's Main Event, Gavin Smith ( although he played more in the Guelph Kitchener area and Pat Pezzin who is a very good limit player.

Yes, I familiar with LA and it's poker scene... but Vegas is the dream....and yeaaa I play the charity casino's as well....as you might know. The city of toronto isn't allowed to have an actual casino (SHITTY!) so we have to goto local suburbs between 40-50km away. Thanks for the link....very helpful!!! I guess I will just say I'm heading to Vegas to blow off some steam and don't quite know howlong I'll be there! lol

The charity casinos back in the 90's weren't anything like Blue Heron or Brantford. They were 3 day roving events that had black jack and 3 holdem tables and there were be around 30 of them every day spread across the GTA. It was like the Wild West as some of the operators were shady and a lot of the players were crazy. It was fun going to different parts of the city as the type of players would change with the area. In some places in Markham I would be the only Non-Asian playing. Go to Bathurst and Steeles and it was all Russians.I really miss those days.

Cool story...I'm originally from brantford and was like 16 y/o when thecasino opened. I'm only 22 now, so I'm pumpedfor this... growing up I played alot of the underground 1-2 nL games around Toronto (a lot of them were in the beaches area) but afew were in Mississauga and Markham as well.Bellagio isprobably the greatest casino I've ever stepped foot in. It's almost majestic...I remember I took aguy for $1700 playing 2-5 nL in 2 back to back hands...first time I had AA against his QQ (allin 800 preflop, then he reloaded another 900) then I got those QQ and he got AA and I flopped quads! haha thats Vegas babby!!

Majestic is in NW Indiana :club: (I keed)But there's lots of places I'd rather go than Bellagio... but it depends what your goal is. If it's LHE though, you might be right.

  • 3 weeks later...

Whats your name? and what casino did you play at for 2 years?and suited up is correct. i got booted from the US. I have something in the works right now.. I'll be back soon.my mistake, told the boarder i was going to vegas to play poker.. 2nd mistake, flew back and forth between canada and vegas, several times, finally they red carded me and told me i have 1 month to pack up and get out.. if i dont, i wont be allowed back into the country when I do leave.as far as your BR goes.. 25k is plenty. vegas is cheap, and 24 hours. and did i mention its pretty cheap? I rented a fully furnished room in a fully furnished house for 500 a month, 10 min drive from the bellagio. i had a car, and gas was about half what it is in Canada.i left with 1500.00 to my name. i had monthly bills of 1400 not including food. (phone, car, insurance, rent) and i was able to play 1/2NL and 1/3NL then some occasional 2,5NL and I managed to live there for 6 months (my point?? The games are super soft at the tourist level. So why move to vegas to play 20-40? just start off at 10-20 until you get comfortable, and eventually you'l stop worrying about how much money you need.GLcheers
