Hi everyone.I just joined the forum and have been lurking for a while. I have played a little cards here and there at home games for the past 10-15 years, but over the last 2 years have started to get into the holdem. I really have a few questions I wanted to ask and was hoping to get some feedback. I have read some conflicting things recently, so I'm hoping that there will be some consensus here. To give you some background, I started by reading Phil Helmuth's book "Play like the Pros". Although it's not a great book it got me hooked, as I won about $500 with the knowledge in 5 visits to the casino (very lucky visits with great cards). I have recently read Small Stakes Holdem and am on my second pass of it. Much prefered this book as it is more mathematically based and makes logical sense. Although my wife doesn't mind my gambling, she is very uneasy of me depositing money on internet poker sites. Call me whipped if you like, but it is a compromise that had to be made. So, the loophole was, Absolute poker had a no deposit/financial information deal where they give you $10. So, I have been playing with that on limit tables only. This has really become more of an experiment than trying to make money. So here are my questions.1. What is the recommended bankroll to move up levels? I have heard 100 times the big bet? I have also heard 50 and 250. Is there a real number, or whatever you are comfortable with? I have been using 120 time the big bet.2. I have grown the $10 to $100 in the past 2 months. I have just started to read measurements of #big bets/100 hands. I have estimated I went from $10 to $60 (at the 10/20 cent table) in 5,000 hands (about 5bb/100 hands). I then moved to 25/50 cent and in 1800 hands gone from $60 to $100 (about 4.4bb/hundred hands). I have seen measurements say 1bb/100 hands is very good, and another say that 3.5bb/100 hands is average. What is a good rate?3. When you move up a level, how many losses are you willing to take before moving back down a level? When starting a new level, I have thought about 40 big bets is where I would move down, but whether I would be disciplined enough is to be seen.4. Has anyone else here done what I have. That is, not put any money on line but build a free stake to something bigger. Just interested in knowing. I have been having a blast and still consider it a experiment. At some point when the total gets big enough, it will seem less like an experiment and more like real money. Thanks in advance to everyone who replies.No_Onions

1) generally, to completely avoid variance, 300bb is a good # for limit. I'm not the best at playing within my bankroll, so do as i say, not as i do :)2) AFAIK, 2-3bb/100 is a good, sustainable number at the lower limits.3) not sure, i'd say 25% of bankroll lost, so 75bb4) nope, not i

1. 300 is suggested, im far more conservative than that though. I use 400. 2. 2bb/100 is average, 3 is good, 5 is crushing the game. of course, 5000 hands is a very small sample. 3. if you get back down to 300 bb for the limit below. 4. $30 in november. 3.1k May 1st. it can be done. Also note ive accomplished this without playing outside my bankroll. I play a lot higher live, though, just did it as an experiment, much like you.
