Basic Tips And/or Advice For Limit

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal, I have been playing NL Hold 'Em for about two years now and have had on and off success, mainly getting most of my winnings from tournements. I have sporadic results in NL cash games, but they are def not anything to brag about. Anyways I was playing in my local casino in a tournie and got chatting to a guy who was playing a lot better than I was and I got the impression he knew a few things, and after some discussion he suggested playing Limit Cash games in order to help my game. I have never played Limit and what I want to know is- Is there much difference between the style of play between NL and Limit, how should I alter my play when playing Limit- Are the BM rules different when playing Limit, if so how?-Any articles/books etc that anyone would suggest reading on Limit Hold 'Em.Thanks guys, all help much appreciated

If You're Not Careful, Your Whole Life Can Become A F**king Grind!!
If you recall, this is what Mike said when he decided to skip his normal limit game and play no limit.

Your bankroll should contain at least 300 big bets. What limits are you looking to play? The only thing I would warn you about is the rake can cut into your results quite bad depending on the size of the stakes and the place you're playing at.I would strongly recommend reading Jennifer Harman's Limit Hold'em section in Super System 2. It helped me the most out of everything I've read for limit. Also Winning Low-Limit Hold'Em by Lee Jones is a strong starter book, infact you'd want to read it before Harman's section in SS2.

Definitely read Small Stakes Holdem by Sklansky and crew. It helped my limit game so much. If you're playing higher limits read the limit chapter in Super System 2, but as a micro stakes player I've found the chapter too advanced against the opponents I'm playing.

Me too, that's why I was asking what limits he is planning on playing. Her advice is still good even for low stakes games though, you just have to ignore her lessons on bluffing since you're seeing a showdown so much at the lower stakes games.

If you're interested in expanding your poker game (limit, no-limit, omaha, being a better player, etc) there are tons to do.As far as limit goes...FIRST (and a must)bite the bullet and buy small stakes holdem (SSHE) ... that is the best starter material and you really should read that before anything elseThen, you get to read these forums... I've found that some of the best help after establishing and advanced view on the game is to read about all of the different situations that players face and reading the responses on how to play them AND WHYAfter reading and studying these forums you get to,practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice v practice practice practice practice practice.... while you're playing, think about all the hands and each step as you make it... always be asking why. Why am I doing what I'm doing preflop? Why am I c/r the flop? Why am I calling down?, etc... Post on these forums about your experiences no matter how embarassing. Let us know you did and why you did it (even if you're god awfully wrong). That is a very good basis and start to limit holdem... from there, find all the material you can about limit holdem and see what it says. Question it, imagine if it works, ask questions in these forums if something makes you wonder. Study your own hands, read more material, and always work to play each hand with the best possible decisions you can make.orjust bug and complain to Zach about everything

Thanks very much for your responses guys. I will look for the Slansky book and read through that and the section from SS2.As for the stakes I think i'll be starting at $1/$0.50 until I feel I like I am playing well (prob take a while lol). I am gonna read through some of the threads in the Limit section to see how people play because I can see a lot of players calling down all the way with 2nd or even 3rd pair. Thanks again guys!

I see you asked about BM rules for limit, are we to assume you'll be playing live? If so, are you sure they spread a game as small as .50/1? If they do, I'd be surprised if the rake is much less if at all than 3/6, and you should really look at the rake because it might be impossible to win in a game like that.

A helpful general guidepost on when to move up is when you have enough bankroll for 300 BB's at the next level. And be prepared to move back down if you struggle at said level.I liked Lee Jones' book and found his basic principles helpful, but I feel that reading SSHE was what really elevated my limit game.

I don't know that those are a match. Harmon's chapter focuses on isolation and making better hands fold.
