  1. I found an article on step strategy online the other day and it recommended having at least 10 tickets at a step before moving up to play that step in order to combat the variance. Unfortunately I don't have the bankroll or player points for that. If you're starting at the bottom like I am, you'd end up having to purchase a whole lotta step 1's to maintain the 10 ticket/step goal. When all was said and done I probably purchased ~10, almost entirely with FTPs, which turned into 4 step 2's, which turned into a single step 3.
  2. And I'm done. Played step 2, played it again, busted out when I shoved over a raiser w/ AK, he called w/ 99 and held up. Probably a bit careless on my part but I have to admit I was growing a bit tired of the low step grind. I'll take a break for a while and maybe come back again later.Good luck to everyone else trying to step their way to the Main Event.
  3. If you're getting it in good and losing, there's nothing you can do to change that. You're making the right decisions and are just in the midst of a bad run. If you think there is a good chance you're ahead, to have to make the call. You can't pass up 54% edges in the hopes of getting a 70% edge later on. MTTs are all about taking advantage of these marginal spots and winning flips to build your stack.Focus more on the rest of your game prior to that point. Are you playing too tight early on and passing up good speculative opportunities? Are you staying too tight in the middle stages, afraid t
  4. Barely staying alive with a step 2 ticket. Almost got back to step 3 last night but suffered a bad beat with 4 left to cripple my stack. I will get back to step 3!
  5. Actually, I realized after that this isn't even the fake bubble. 6-7 get a step 1 ticket, 5 gets a step 2, etc. That said, the two shorties at the table represent the difference between a step 1 ticket and replaying step 3 for me.

We're on the bubble here, so 6th gets nothing, while 5th stays in the system with at least a Step 2 ticket. Blinds are high and climbing but notice the two shorties at the table.
  7. He's more like a Jedi. He uses the Force to feel the patterns in the numbers.
  8. Sigh, now down to a single Step 3 ticket. With my Step 2 I had gotten bumped down to step 1, back up to step 2, then busted out when I got it in as a shortie with 77 against 22 and 55, and the 55 turned a set.Played the step 3 and held on to it. Will likely try again tomorrow. If this one doesn't last, I'll probably go back to playing some 10NL Rush to accumulate some more FTPs with the goal of purchasing another few step 1 tickets a bit later on.
  9. LOL, of course. What I meant was that I wasn't sure if shoving JJ was +ev against his range. The limited info I have on him thus far suggests loose passive, so his raising range is going to be on the tighter side. In a regular SnG I'd probably ship with only a slight hesitation, but the satty structure of the steps made me question this one more deeply. As for hand 1, my stack is in a very awkward spot with ~15bb. Open-shoving seems a bit on the heavy-handed side, but standard raising gets me into precisely this difficult spot when called.
  10. Here's another one, from a Step 3 this time.Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em Tournament, 50/100 Blinds (8 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.comHero (Button) (t1900)SB (t2400)BB (t1225)UTG (t1640)UTG+1 (t1030)MP1 (t1520)MP2 (t2470)CO (t1315)Hero's M: 12.67Preflop: Hero is Button with J, J2 folds, MP1 bets t350, 2 folds, Hero ???Villain had been playing 35/8 through a small sample of 26 hands. Calling could get me in a very tough spot postflop, and shoving could run me into QQ-AA. I have a fairly healthy stack at this point (relative to the rest of the table) and it would absolutel
  11. In case anyone decides to drop in...This is from fairly early in a 9-man turbo Step 2 to the WSOP ME on Tilt.Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em Tournament, 40/80 Blinds (8 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.comBB (t905)Hero (UTG) (t1315)UTG+1 (t1490)MP1 (t2970)MP2 (t1880)CO (t2790)Button (t880)SB (t1270)Hero's M: 10.96Preflop: Hero is UTG with Q, AHero bets t200, 3 folds, CO calls t200, 3 foldsFlop: (t520) K, J, J(2 players)Hero ???Do you CB here? If so, how much? Top 5 stay in the system, the rest get nada (5th goes down to step 1, 3/4 play step 2 again, 1/2 win a step 3 ticket).
  12. My step hopes are fading fast thanks to a very cold deck. I'm still holding on to my step 3 but I've now used up almost all my FTPs and have only managed to end up with one additional step 2 ticket. I'm going to hold off playing the step 3 until the deck starts to warm up a bit.
  13. The Steps are not being kind tonight. I decided to play my two Step 2's (both 9-man turbos), and busted out of both - one when I was card dead and ran A6s into AK, and the other when my AQs<AJ. So I figured I would purchase another two Step 1's with my dwindling supply of FTPs, choosing to play the 9-man super turbos. Busted out of one when my 99 ran into TT, and barely squeaked out another Step 1 in the other.Updated scoreboardStep 1 tickets: 1Step 3 tickets: 1
  14. Played a couple Step 2's last night and ended up with two repeat Step 2's.Played two more tonight, busted in one and scored a Step 3 with the other.Updated scoreboardStep 2 tickets: 2Step 3 tickets: 1
  15. Agree with making a smaller flop bet. Also, raise bigger PF. A 3-bet to $1 would be standard without the caller. Once that guy comes along, you need to raise bigger for the squeeze and to appropriately charge speculative hands. I'd usually 3-bet to at least $1.30ish there.
  16. ScoreboardStep 2 Tickets: 4Played a bunch of the super turbos tonight with tickets purchased with FTPs. Nice to have finally found something to do with the FTPs.
  17. True but it is generally accepted wisdom that the faster the structure, the lower the skill edge of any particular player.
  18. Step 2. Bubble has broken but 5th place gets knocked back down to step 1. I've been card dead most of the SnG. Villain had been playing relatively tight, as were all the remaining players.Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em Tournament, 200/400 Blinds (5 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.comButton (t2650)SB (t2800)Hero (BB) (t1630)UTG (t3160)MP (t3260)Hero's M: 2.72Preflop: Hero is BB with 9, A1 fold, MP bets t3260 (All-In), 2 folds, Hero ???
  19. The super turbos are the worst way to play the steps, you might as well flip coins.
  20. I don't know if Stars will be changing their steps this time around, but I really like the system on Tilt. They do have one additional step but it's cheaper to start ($3.30 vs $7.50 on Stars, if I recall correctly) and there are more options. If you can afford to buy in directly to a higher step it makes no difference, but it's nice that they provide more options for micro grinders. If you're used to playing $1 and $2 SnGs, starting at $7 is a big jump.
  21. GL on step 4. Have you seen an increase in the quality of play on steps 3 and 4?Has anyone tried the 4-man HU knockouts? I was hoping to try one last night but nobody sat down so I played another 9-man turbo.
  22. If he's competent, he's not going to be playing speculative hands and he would know not to tangle with the one stack at the table that can bust him without the goods to back it up. So I'd say his range is probably very narrow and beating you pretty badly (AA/KK/AK, maybe KQ). I just can't see a competent SnGer playing any hand you beat this way.
  23. Bought a couple of step 1 tickets with my FTPs, used one tonight and turned it into another step 2. Tomorrow I'll take a crack at moving up to step 3.
  24. I had been so card dead during the recent orbit that 76o was the best hand I had seen in a while. No exaggeration, I was dealt 32o two hands in a row just prior to this. My desperation might have made me a bit trigger happy when a hand with some value came my way.
  25. Pot odds aren't a good enough reason to make the call in a satty structure like this. If he lets me have it, I'm still the shortie and he's still sitting middle of the pack about to get the best positioning at the table. If he calls and loses, he and I basically switch places and he becomes the shortie. I'm not sure the risk is worth the potential reward. But I'll admit the call isn't as stupid as I indicated in my initial reaction.Anyway, haven't had a chance to play step 2 yet but I might use some FTPs to buy another couple of tickets. Couldn't hurt to have a few irons in the fire.
